View Full Version : New Feature: User Reputation (Karma)

The old forums had a karma system that would give members karma points based upon their post count. Our new software uses a reputation system. This is how it works...
All new members start with 0 reputation points. All members that were imported from the old system were given about 1 point per 100 posts. Mods and Admins were given an extra boost. That will start us off.
Every member will get 1 point for every 100 posts in the system from here on out. In addition to that, every member will get 1 point for every 73 days you are a registered member on the site.
Now here is the fun part... you can give other members positive or negative reputation points!!! On each post, you will see an icon that looks like this http://www.clothesfreeforum.com/images/buttons/reputation.gif. Just click that icon to give that user reputation.
So if you like someone post, reward them for it by giving them some positive reputation. However, you can also give negative reputation to members who post things that you do not approve of.
Now here is the complex part... the amount of rep points that you can give to another is determined by how many rep points you have. So someone with good reputation is going to make more of an impact than someone that has very little or bad reputation. Also, you are only allowed to give so much reputation per day and to each user. You must distribute reputation (good and bad) to as many members as you can. The system will tell you when you cant give more reputation.
I know this may sound complex, just use it and watch it in action for a little bit and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.
Click on the "Members" link at the top in the dark blue navigation block to see a list of members sorted by rep power. The highest reputations are at the top.

thanks for the heads up! will we be able to see who gave us good or bad points?

I must have a very BAD reputation because the total point on the old forum site were about 1200. When I logged in on the new site I only have about 800.

Sounds like a good way to harass, discourage, and perhaps eventually drive those from the forum that some don't like. Have you considered how this point system can and will be abused? Have you also considered how this might assist in limiting or eliminating those serious topics and discussions that do tend to get heated?

I'm another who's dubious about it. Like so many other things, time will tell.
I never paid much attention to the old system, and probably won't pay much attention to this either. However, the previous system had a the advantage of being objective. Points were given for specific known reasons, primarily for the number of posts contributed. This system is entirely subjective. It may as easily reflect pettiness as merit.

I think one way to ease Sanslines concerns, as we know who has the most points to crush him with, would be to limit the points that any one member can give or take from another.
So let's say that Sanslines has 1000 points, he can nail me for a -10 an dnegate a lot of nice things from other people. This could be eliminated if members were limited on the amount of points they could give or take from someone else. Let's say it's 5. Sanslines generates a great deal of pain from someone who can take away about 45 points, currently. If we limit them to only being able to give or take 5 than someone would not be able to crush someone else into oblivian or boost someone to a god-like status.

gave a flip what others think of you. Since I don't, I shouldn't be bothered by it one way or another.:D

Right now you can view your reputation and who gave it to you. We may decide to change this later.
The old karma system was based on post count... nothing else. So really is was pointless. You could just check someone post count if you want. The karma added nothing extra.
The new system is useful. Just like your reputation in the world may be important to you, the reputation on the forums will be important. It's now based on what others think of you. If a lot of people like you and your posts, you'll have a very high reputation here. If you are constantly causing problems and making people angry, you'll have very low reputation here.
The way the system works, the more reputation points you have the more rep impact you make on others. So if you don't have much reputation here, your reputation comments will not matter as much. However, members that have a lot of good reputation will make a larger impact when they give another person reputation.

As I mentioned in another thread, the system now shows how many posts you have in the system. The old forum software included deleted posts and archived posts.

Perhaps a better way to describe the old karma point system is to say that it was harmless rather then pointless. It didn't harm people one way or another. The only reputation that really matters is the real world reputation. The real world has real consequences. I only replied to this topic for newer posters who are not established here might see this as another means to be harassed for posting unpopular statements. We have already had one valuable female poster just leave and I am sad to see her go. The seasoned and hardened veterans of this forum will most probably not give a hoot what their forum reputation is. My real concern here is to have this used as some kind of limit or control against those who are not interested or comfortable in standing up to the status quo. Rather then encourage an environment where anyone can post whatever their opinions are without any fear of consequences, we may very well be traveling down the road to homogenizing the forum and quashing any form of dissent. It does indeed sound like the the direction of the forum is to become more of a popularity contest rather then a place to hash out some rather serious topics such as the Iraq War. Some opinions will be popular and others will not. Are you sure that you really want to create this kind of forum where only a few popular and even fewer unpopular peeps survive?

Here is how it all breaks down. You can find your personal reputation by clicking on "UserCP" and go to your control panel. Scroll down a bit and you can see who changed your reputation and any comments they may have left you.

Wow. All this time, I never knew this existed, or gave any attention to the 'dots'.
I am glad I know now! I would really like to give some good kharma to some people here!! I am glad to see that there is a way to give some 'props' to those that really deserve some. Thanks!!

I couldn't find anything on this in my user CP. Is that because my little square is still gray and I'm an "unknown quantity at this time"? LOL.
I'm on another board that my square turned green after my first post. I've been on here over a year and I have also noticed people on here many years and their squares are still gray.
However, recently I did notice one on here that "turned green" after just days as a member and with almost no posts!

I just looked back and reread part of this, and I guess I must have like 5 points for the number of days registered, but not enough for even 1 point for posts (under 100 so far.)
Looks like you need 10 points to begin having a reputation? What does it mean when someone's square has turned green but when you roll your mouse over it it still says they are an "unknown quantity at this time" just like the neutral gray ones?

All new members start with 0 reputation points... .

I did however see a way on here recently to get INSTANT "reputation votes" on this forum when you first sign up, before you've been a member more than a couple days and almost before posting a thing!
You can if you join and are an 18 YEAR OLD FEMALE with a personal pic in profile and avatar. ;) :D ;) :D ;) :D
Not only will you instantly "go green" but you will already be "on a distinguished road" :D :D :D :D
That way you won't need to wait 4 years or post hundreds of times, LOL.....

Don't panic, Josh.
I have been dishing out reputation almost every time I log on since I found out about this. Almost nobody ever responds in kind. I don't think people here give it much thought or importance.
Just show up, participate, add something positive to the conversation, and your undocumented form of reputation will be great!

This system means little. Few use it, and when it is used it often seems arbitrary. At least the old system reflected actual activity.
