Cruising for sex in Acadia targeted
By Bill Trotter

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK - Naked people is not one of the things that most people come to Maine’s only national park to see, but public nudity in the park has been known to happen from time to time, many local residents and park officials readily admit.

It is not just the nudists — or naturists, as they often are called — who seek out certain areas of the park to swim, sunbathe, or just hang out that draw the attention of park officials, however. Park rangers have filed criminal charges against people who have been caught allegedly exposing themselves and either soliciting or engaging in sex.

Last week, a park ranger came across two men allegedly having oral sex at Lake Wood, a popular park-owned swimming site off Crooked Road near Hulls Cove that has a reputation as a place where people swim in the buff. They both were charged with disorderly conduct, according to Park Ranger Kevin Cochary.

Lake Wood and Thompson Island, a small chunk of land that connects Route 3 on MDI to the mainland, are places where rangers have investigated multiple complaints of men soliciting each other for sex, Cochary said. A few weeks ago, a third man was issued a summons for disorderly conduct after he allegedly tried to solicit sex by exposing himself to a plainclothes ranger at Thompson Island, he said.

Rangers have stepped up patrols recently and seem to have reduced the amount of cruising for sex that occurs at these places, the ranger said.

"We are aware there is activity both at Lake Wood and Thompson Island," Cochary said. "Some of the problems at Lake Wood have been decreasing because of the extra efforts we’ve been making."

There is a public restroom at Thompson Island, but Cochary said this is not necessarily where the liaisons take place. Sometimes strangers make contact in one of the small island’s parking lots and sometimes they go off into the nearby woods, he said.

An Internet search of the words "Lake Wood" and "Acadia" quickly turns up two Web sites, one of which is owned by the Boston Globe, that list Lake Wood as one of the best places in the region to go for a nude swim. The search results also include a reference to Lake Wood at www.******.com, which lists the pond as a place to cruise for sex.

But Cochary emphasized that despite what any Web site or list might indicate, public nudity or sexual activity is not permitted or tolerated anywhere in Acadia.

"It is illegal. We don’t allow it," he said.

Hiking, bicycling, swimming in bathing suits, and other widely accepted family friendly activities are the kinds of things the park encourages, the ranger added.

The men charged Sept. 24 in the Lake Wood incident are Tobin Fitch, 29, of Trenton, and Brent Lawyer, 46, of Chicago, according to Cochary. The man accused of exposing himself on Sept. 16 at Thompson Island is Dominick Coyne, 48, of Mount Desert, Cochary said.

Tyco, you and I joked about your old avatar on a previous thread, so I remembered your nickname and that you were from Maine.

I'm not sure why you posted the story in this thread. I agree that it's lousy that some people will highjack traditionally nudist places and use them for sexual playgrounds, thereby leaving the rest of us with one less place to go.

But when the article posted the names of the men found in compromising positions, that's something that I thought stopped in the 1980s. Many of these men who go cruising in public places are frequently married (to women) and do not identify as being out and gay. Out gay men do not have to resort to this illicit sex to get their rocks off, to put it bluntly.

Personally, I see these guys as rather sad cases and wish they could find non-nudist places to do their closeted sexual business.

But to post their names in a newspaper is ridiculous. I remember when a similar thing happened outside Toronto about 25 years ago, the men who were named all suffered terribly afterwards - loss of jobs, two suicides, several marriage breakups. I wonder if we would similarly see the names of *men and women* in newspapers who were caught in compromising positions in public places?

Journeyman,

I'm not sure I saved that avatar pic and am sorry they got flushed out when they made the change here.....

The problems and issues of Lake Wood in Acadia NP have been posted here in the past. This latest article came out Tuesday, and I felt it important to post, as it has been thought that nudity was slowly returning to that spot. It is important to note here, and on other nudist sites, that the park's attitude has not changed.

I could have either posted this here, or in the "Nudes in the News" section, but since this really wasn't about nudists in the news, and the new rules here state no cross-posting (multiple posts in more than one section), I decided this was probably the best section to put it.

If you click on the BDN link, there are many interesting replies to the article posted by readers, some congratulating the paper for mentioning the names, others blasting it for doing so. I was a bit surprised to see the paper did that, and tend to agree with you that someone's life could be ruined for one mistake on one day: lost job, lost marriage, etc. But, having said that, I will say that I myself have seen many cruising gay guys habitually frequent Lake Wood, wanking, touching themselves, (sometimes with children within view), and I have been approached by these types too many times. They have destroyed what used to be a beautiful spot for innocent nudity forever, and I am glad to hear that the rangers are getting serious about getting rid of them. Unfortunately, this also meant closing the whole park to any nudity. I now go elsewhere, and will never return to Lake Wood.

I wasn't aware that there had been reports of sexual activity at Lake Wood. It's certainly true that we have lost locations because of this. Then when it's reported in the press, the reporters aren't careful at all about separating nudity from sex, which hurts our reputation in the eyes of the public. Not only that, if there are people out there who have the idea that sex with an anonymous partner in a public place might be fun (whether such people are gay full-time or basically straight, but able to get the same rush from an encounter with a man) if they hear about a nude beach in the future, they might go there looking for sex, and if two people do that and manage to get lucky, that's the start of that place's reputation as a spot for sex. And so the process continues.

We have to be able to call the police and say "There are people having sex at the nude beach. Please stop it." If we can't do that, we're doomed. What really annoys me is when naturists know that a place is a hangout for gay sex and tiptoe around desperately trying to avoid telling the truth about it, out of misplaced liberal attitudes, or pragmatic attempts to avoid quarreling with gay groups, or whatever reason. We can't ask for protection against something that we're anxious not to mention!
