At the risk of sounding callous and uncaring (I am neither): any incident that results in loss of property or injury to the property owners is tragic, I wonder what value is served by posting this information on CFF - except for the novelty of the fire occurring at a nudist resort.

(But then, some of the comments from readers are an indication of how far the nudist lifestyle has to go before "acceptance" some of which would represent the 'novelty' that is a common view of people unfamiliar with living a naturist lifestyle.)

It would seem that Tampa Bay Online is attempting to sensationalize an event that would otherwise not been mentioned at all.

Very sad for the homeowners...I'm glad they got out without injury. It is also very unfortunate that many of the readers of this article took the time to make fun of this event through poor attempts at humor at the expense of these homeowners...sad.

Well I am sure that there are members of CFF that go to Caliente, and I am sure that they are interestd in this story.

As far as the paper covering the story. Most papers that I have seen always report fires. I am not sure why you would think it unusual.

(I wasn't going to comment on something this sadly tragic to a neighbor.)

Having flown into Florida from LAX two days before on Wednesday, I was in my study on the second floor around noon Friday when enormous billowing black smoke erupted nearby in a home on Los Cabos Court. Within five minutes of the first 911 call the first Pasco County fire truck arrived; over the next fifteen minutes I counted an additional four tankers plus a number of support cars and ambulances. Luckily no one suffered any injuries. From one source it took the firefighters ninety minutes to contain the fire which miraculously did not spread to any adjacent homes. This weekend as I walked past the burned residence I noticed that two Queen palm trees planted a few yards away from the garage were left untouched. Certainly the containment is due to the concrete and steel building materials in the wall and, as in the Southern California fires, the luck of the draw. No 1960's shake roofs here.

My Saturday edition of the St. Petersburg Times had a large front page picture of the two-and-a-half year old two story home and the suspected flash point, a charred RV in the garage. The Tampa Tribune did a smaller "Joe Friday" sidebar (just the facts mam) calling it a three alarm fire. The one departure in reporting came from WTSP Tampabay 10, an ABC affiliate.

Within minutes after the fire was reported, their old Bell 206 Jet Ranger with Captain Al Taylor aboard was hovering noisily 500' above Caliente and remained on-site for nearly an hour. The bright red Channel 10 news-copter was briefly joined by Channel 13's; apparently a fire at a nudist resort is more of a fire than a garden variety strip mall inferno. With the cacophony above, we residents stood at the end of Vista del Lago and Los Cabos Court sharing what little information we could glean and prayed the firefighters could extinguish the flames as quickly as possible. They succeeded.

At 5 o'clock, WTSP 10 teased the story for a half hour before doing a feature at 5:30 pm with a live reporter standing just outside the Caliente entrance gate. Coming out of a commercial break the camera showed a BMW 7-series driving into Caliente as the camera panned and the female reporter breathlessly intoned: Within these walls lies the very private and exclusive nudist world of Caliente Resort and Spa..." She finished the report by saying the property loss had been put at one million dollars. It was uttered reminiscent of Austin Powers-Goldmember.

Even in tragedy there is an element of titillation and media exploitation when a nudist resort is the story.

Thanks for the first-hand report, Wcstflyer. From your report, it's clear that the fire was a "really big deal" both the property owners and nearby residents at Caliente. We are all enormously grateful that there was no injury to any residents, and as I had said before any fire that results in loss of property (let alone injury) due to fire is a tragedy.

Yet, it seems that we are surprised (and often dismayed) when an incident such as this, and because it occurs at a naturist venue, provides opportunity for the media to sensationalize what of itself is tragic enough without the tongue-in-cheek innuendo.

Hopefully the owners are able to restore their property quickly and that the insurance company doesn't create other hurdles for them.
