In 2004 Air Littoral, a regional airline based in Montpellier, France went out of business and suddenly a once easy trip from Nice to the nearest major airport to Cap d' Agde became an insurmountable obstacle. For years we'd made an easy overnight trip from the U.S. to Nice on the Cote d' Azure before hopping over the Montpellier. After the liquidation of Air Littoral we thought we'd solved the problem by flying Michael O' Leary's Ryanair. Fly overnight from Los Angeles, take in the British atmosphere of a night in London then hop on down to the Mediterranean. If only it were that easy.

Let me tell all the folks here who are not familiar with Rayanair that it is not an exact European counterpart to Herb Kelleher's Southwest Airlines. For one thing, the airports that they fly out of make international connections adventuresome and daunting. They do not fly out of Heathrow or Gatwick, the two main entry points to England; in Germany they don't fly into Frankfurt-Main. This is like flying to San Fransisco through Hayward airport in the east bay or Los Angeles through Torrance. So far Michael O' Leary has managed to pad his airline's income with sweet deals from grateful towns throughout Europe who are happy to pay him fly his planes to their underutilized airports. But if you are an international passenger connecting with them be forewarned.

If you are the least bit tall (I'm 6' 4") or wide (which we're fortunately not) Ryanair will make a trip aboard a U.S. low coast carrier seem like a first class flight aboard Virgin Atlantic or Singapore Airlines. It was amazing that the Boeing 737-800 carried only 189 passengers. For two hours I was trying to guess how tight the seat pitch was (30") and remarking to my wife how complacent and well behaved the British were in such tight seating (she has sharp elbows.) Of course the British are mild-mannered even during the chaos of the airport check-in lines. If the airplane suddenly depressurized the British would say "oh...quite" before donning their oxygen masks.

If saving a few pounds/dollars/Euros appeals to you check out the low cost European carriers.

London's two main airports are taken up by all the big international carriers so few budget airlines can get a slot, why not fly into a regional international airport like Manchester or Birmingham and you'll get all the connections you want, Stanstead is the home of Easyjet so that's a good bet too. If you do want to see something of London there are excellent rail links to Stanstead from London, or maybe something different, try a night in London take Eurostar under the English Channel for a night in Paris then on to the south of France and Cap d'Adge or La Grande Cosse.

Another low cost airline to consider:
