I saw a TV show recently that supports the idea that nudity can help young people deal with body image issues. I am off work this week, which has given me plenty of time to sample daytime TV. A couple of times I have caught a reality show on the Oxygen network about the Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency. The modeling agency employs a crew of college-age men and women. A recent episode features several of the models working as nude artist models. Janice Dickinson states during the episode that nude modeling helps the models gain self-confidence. Janice Dickinson goes on to state that she wishes she were posing nude and that she is basically a nudist. A preview of a future episode centers on one young model who is having difficulty with the idea of having to remove her clothes in front of others.

Interesting, but an official modeling agency generally uses a very different type of model as compared to art models. Art models are supposed to be both genders, and all shapes, sizes, ages, etc. Most official modeling agencies only want young, attractive women (primarily) and men.

Its still a good step forward with body acceptance though, if these young people are seen to relaxed with nudity it puts out a message to the potential future nudists that nudity isn't dirty or disgusting as some quarters would have you believe.

Janice Dickinson's modeling agency is a fashion modeling agency. She represents men and women for fashion/entertainment work, not art. The purpose of that episode and the art exercise was to build self confidence with her models. Some of her models were uncomfortable with nudity and she wanted to "snap" them out of it. Janice has often stated on the show that a model can not be hesitant about nudity in fashion as they will have clients needing a model for a shoot that may require some form of nudity. In addition, when models are doing a runway show, he/she will be nude among others backstage. A model who can not or does not feel comfortable being nude will cost the agency the job.

This is a ratings stunt ... PERIOD.
These channels cater to those who are wanting to see and be one of the 'beautiful people', and ths mindset is why we have so many problems recruiting younger people.
They see these shows, and think that if you are a woman and not size 2 with full c-cups, you are not cute enough. Men are all to be buff and look like some GQ model.
Let's not get into the 'it's nude so it must be good' mindset.
When they have everyday people posing as art models and showing everyday people with their scars, too much weight, or women who lost a breast to breast cancer, or an amputee, ... (get my point?), that will get us on the right track.

Last night my wife & I were watching BBC America and two shows came on that were interesting.
'My small breasts and me'
'My large breasts and me'
Both were really good shows and the first one had this one girl fly to New York where her therapy was to get some photos taken. This was a woman who rarely left her house because she felt so bad about her body image. (she was an A cup) She was not comfortable with the photo shoot, and was even crying during it. But when she saw the photos she cried again but because she saw herself in a different light. She is a beautful woman, and the photos really brought that out.
The same sort of thing happened in the second show. A woman who always wanted to be a model, but felt she had too large breasts (she has a G cup) and she was stuck behind the camera instead of in front of it. Well she finally did go audition to be a model and other models commented on how good she looked. She started to feel a lot better about herself.
Both shows followed the lives of 3 women dealing with their issues. I would recommend them to anyone interested. Very interesting.

1. I agree with those who state that real art models would not necessarily be young and beautiful. The ratings compel the show to feature only models that are young and attractive.
2. An aspect of the show that I find interesting is that the girls all seem to have some level of insecurity regarding their appearance despite the fact that they all are beautiful. The girls agonize over whether they are too fat or not curvy enough and they can't resist comparing themselves to others who they think are closer to perfection. The boys seem to have much less of a problem with this.
3. The main point that I was trying to make in my original post is that the show presents nude modeling as a way of gaining self-confidence.

I saw the show tonight for the first time. It was alright. It won't ever be my favorite but it was o.k. I noticed that genitals and breasts were blurred but butts were not. That was a small step forward, it's a shame they feel the need to blur anything of course. I don't think I'll see it again soon because it's on Oxygen which I don't get at home (I'm visiting family).

Obviously many tv programs use nudism as a ratings gatherer. My feeling is that there is no such thing as bad publicity. If our lifestyle is being brought to the forefront, that is the important thing. The way nudity is portrayed here is acceptable to me.
Where I get irritated is when nudists are portrayed as being into swinging or attending orgies. While there is a percentage who are into this type of stuff, it by no means is the largest number.
We need more shows to bring this subject into the mainstream especially if it is done without the overt relation to sex which is all too common.
