View Full Version : Best nude performance in a movie: Rae Dawn Chong?

I thought for sure that the best nude role in a movie was Emmanuelle Beart as the reluctant nude model in "La Belle Noiseuse." She is nude throughout about half of the movie; the acting is great and she pulls it off while completely nude. But then I realized I had totally forgotten about Rae Dawn Chong in "Quest for fire." I came across a "making of" featurette while visiting a french nudist website: really interesting stuff. What was interesting was RDC's take on the nudity in the movie; contrary to most actors/actresses who describe nude scenes as a trying or intense ordeal, RDC says that she enjoyed every minute of it and embraced it completely. The footage (of which some stills are attached) demonstrates that RDC seems quite comfortable being nude both on and off set. Maybe she isn't as "intensely nude" for long periods of time as Emmanuelle Beart was, but it is quite apparent that her performance comes close to having a "naturist spirit" to it.
So what do you think? Best nude performance in a movie award to Rae Dawn Chong?

Wow, what a great memory. I remember enjoying that movie a lot, but it has been so long, I cannot remember any details about it.

You're not kidding! I was 11 when I saw it (it had just come out). I remember thinking: "Wow...she actually is completely nude!" but I wasn't particularily shocked by it, since her performance was so natural. On the other hand, I was more shocked by the action scenes, which were extremely gory (for the times). Other than that, I don't remember much of it.

As I recall spoken 'words' did not come from any particular language. There was no English, French, Spanish or any other modern language. The 'dialog' consisted of sounds and gestures but was communicated clearly without familiar spoken words. I remember it as a very good movie which we enjoyed thoroughly.

I never saw Quest for Fire nor La Belle Noiseuse, so I can't really judge.
But if you look at those pictures, RDC really looks like she's enjoying herself. Not shy at all, but completely comfortable with her nudity.
I also saw that extra stuff on the DVD too. I thought it was awesome. She did act like it was totally natural. I love the movie as well. What was even more impressive is she and other actors were nude in a couple different climates, some pretty chilly.

La Belle Noiseuse is a study in the creative process, particularily between the artist and his nude model. At the beginning (the first 2 stills), the model is extremely reluctant and feels "forced" to be nude. Gradually, she becomes more and more interested in the creative process. Then, she embraces the artist's vision and her own nudity (last two stills). There is a last and final stage, where the model's "inner being" is revealed through her nudity and the artist's work (I won't give away the ending). Very interesting and deep stuff.
Undoubtebly, the two performances, notwithstanding the complete nudity, are very different. One is a character study, where nudity functions as a sort of catalyst to reveal the inner workings of both the artist and the model. In "Quest for fire", the nudity is much more physical and an historical representation of the stone age. But they are both great performances and bold statements from both actresses.

I'm much older than you and having been a beach nudist, the nudity didn't affect me any. I think there was a lot of humor in the movie too if I'm not mistaken. Wasn't there a scene where some animal chased a few cave men up a tree, and they were stuck on that tree for a long time. And when they finally came down and left the tree, there were no leaves left on it? I don't why but I found that amusing. I'd like to see the other movie too, sounds interesting.

YES!! I think they were being chased by wolves...and a leaf-munching scene in a tree! I also remember a scene where one gets hit upside the head with a rock; and the other guys crack up laughing while blood is gushing from his head! Stone age humor!
I think I'm going to go order it right now...

Once again Tony, I can always count on you in making some interesting topic starters around here and I see that this new one of yours is no different. Although, I have never seen this particular movie before with the beautiful Rae Dawn Chong, but I do know that she is a very good actress and have been in other hit movies such as “Commando” with Arnold Schwazenegger, “Soul Man” which featured my favorite actor of all time James Earl Jones (This is CNN! LOL...) and also in the Academy Award winning movie "The Color Purple".
However, I have never been the type of person to judge others without knowing them first or in this case without seeing the 1981 Quest for Fire movie first, but I will take your word for it Tony and put this movie Quest for Fire on my "Movies to watch list". Although, Rae Dawn Chong might be worthy enough for your best nude performance award Tony, but she may have a little competition with other actresses out there, such as for an example “Daryl Hannah” in the 1982 movie "Summer Lovers". I personally think Daryl Hannah did enough nude running around on the naturist beaches of Greece, in this particular movie to be also considered for a nomination to the best nude female performance as well. Plus like Rae Dawn Chong, Daryl Hannah has Starr in other hit movies such as “Blade Runner” with Harrison Ford, “Splash” with Tom Hanks and the box-office hit “Kill Bill Vol.2” with Uma Thurman.

La Belle Noiseuse was a tremendous movie. That was about 19 or 20 years ago, when I had a real life.
As a photographer is made me feel as if I could take a shy person and turn her into a work of art. I shoot off and on, and am on a 2 year break, but wanting to shoot real soon again.

Daryl Hannah in "Summer Lovers"? I watched it; actually for the first time, about two months ago. Not at all what I expected (in terms of the nudity). The very few scenes Daryl spends nude, she actually seems to be doing more ducking or turning away from the camera than running around the nude beach. The two other protagonists are actually more openly nude in the movie than Daryl is. I don't know if it was a choice to portray the character as nudity-shy; or was it Daryl that was at the time "camera-nudity shy." I dunno WS; can furtive glimpses of nudity be put on the same level as a completely and openly nude performance? Sounds like a good debate!
I will say this, though: the movie does have two nice nude beach scenes. They are beautifully filmed.

My vote would have to go to Summer Lovers, as its really the only movie I've ever really seen that has a fair amount of open nudity and nude beach scenes. I enjoyed it and wish there were many more similar movies available. I acually received the Dvd in the mail from a CFF member here ( I forget Who, and apoligize for that) and was suppose to pass it on to another CFF member who might be interested in veiwing it, but forgot about it for a long while. So if anyone is interested in seeing it and having it mailed to them, drop me a private message, and we'll set it up. The member that sent it to me had wanted to kinda get it passed around and post where all it had traveled. I just wish I could remember who sent it to me, to know where it started, Duhha

Has anyone mentioned the X-Men movies? The character Mystique played by Rebecca Romijn is a character that does not wear clothes. The actress is in body paint for every scene she is in.
being a lifelong nudist..... Embarassed to say tha a co-worker of mine had to point out that she was 'nude'. I had to go back and look again to notice. Ha ha!!

I agree that Summer Lovers presents a great perspective on nude beaches. We cannot forget Maslin Beach (search the movie) though. Not the production values of Hollywood, it was made in Australia, but a humorous look at life on one of Aussie's most popular nude beaches. I really liked the casual presentation of nudity in Maslin.

I like the pictures from Summer Lovers even though I've never seen the movie and don't know whether it was a good movie on its own merits.
The fact that the nudity in it was from a nude beach is a good thing. We should have more naturist scenes in mainstream movies.

I would be remissed if I didn't also mention Amanda Donohoe's performance in "Castaway."
http://imdb.com/title/tt0092732/
The story I read: Amanda Donohoe read the book by Lucy Irvine, who described that she wore very little clothing, if any, during her stay on the island (quite naturally). And AD decided to remain faithful to the story and illustration, which is the last pic attached (the real Lucy Irvine). During the movie, AD gravitates between topfreedom and complete nudity, in way that is consistent with the character and the storyline. Kudos to Amanda Donohoe for an excellent performance and "keeping it real"!

Yes indeed, this was a good movie which brings back a lot of memories. I believe it was released in the early or mid-1980's. I did not see it in the theater, but I watched it on one of my premium cable movie channels like Showtime,Cinemax, or something to that effect. But it was quite a long time ago and I too have forgotten a lot about it. But I was most impressed with actress Rae Dawn Chong's apparent easiness with being nude. I saw her in the 1985 action-adventure movie "Commando" alongside Arnold Schwartzenegger(I hope I spelled his last name correctly!) and she played a completely different role. So it was sort of a transition for me at that time. But I agree that her role in "Quest for Fire" was nevertheless excellent.

She was in Sirens with Hugh Grant (early 90's) She wasn't nude through out the entire movie, but had frequent nude scenes and was very at ease and natrual.
I'll go with RDC as the most natural in an extended role.

"Sirens"...yeap. Another great movie about nudity and art. Some are the shots are naturally beautiful...most particularily the last shot at the end of the movie, where all the women are standing on top of the mountain completely nude. Very inspiring.

Okay Nudony, you have made a very good point here and to which I have to agree with you about the movie Summer Lovers with Daryl Hannah, she really did not do that much of full frontal nudity scenes. Although and speaking in the contexts of naturism, the movie of Summer Lovers did at least have a back drop settling of a naturist beach, without the negative stigma that the non-naturist community likes to joke about. In them terms I will give Daryl Hannah some credit, since she was willing to act within a movie that had some naturist beaches screen shots, but since you are talking about actors or actresses who are playing in roles of complete full frontal nudity, I got one for you called; "The Loss of Sexual Innocence"!

The loss of sexual innocence trailer
Not only is there full frontal nudity within this movie which is played by the up and coming English actor Femi Ogunbanjo and actress Hanne Klintoe (who betray Adam and Eve), here is the first time ever in this topic a man or better yet a black man being some what comfortable with acting nude (full frontal that is), also along side his female counterpart. However if you haven't notice this, but most of the movies that have been named so far are mostly referring to women being full frontal nude on the silver screen, here a movie "The Loss of Sexual Innocence" that is truly different from the ones that are being mention only about women actresses.

"Loss of Sexual Innocence" Absolutely, WS. Very rarely (if ever) has nudity been so unabashedly candid as it was depicted in TLOSI by Femi Ogunbanjo and Hanne Klintoe. I'll have to give big kudos to them both for pushing the boundaries of nudity in films.

Thanks Tony, but I think you wanted to know how deep down the rabbit whole can I go and this is what I can come up with. My father (R.I.P) use to tell me; be careful for what you ask for, because you just might see how far it goes and that could be a good thing nor bad. However, for this particular case it’s more in the range of something good, but nine times out of ten there is probably a movie out there that can top the Loss of Sexual Innocence, to which I want be surprise at all. Although, the Adam & Eve scenes in the movie “The Loss of Sexual Innocence” was pretty short (going in and out), but I did happen to find another You Tube clip that specifically showcase cut scenes of the Adam & Eve sequence. Its 10:00 minutes long of just Femi Ogunbanjo and Hanne Klintoe, but you must note that the audio has been replace with a different soundtrack (Led Zeppelin vs Mike Figgis) from the original movie (then again the roles of the Adam & Eve sequence didn’t have words anyway).

This particular started out within a 1950 nudist resort and end in the same manor. Although, if we are judging this movie upon full frontal, of the main characters (Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr.) there isn’t any, but a lot of carefully places camera shots.

The strange thing about this: it's not Nicole Kidman's bare back...she has been frequently nude on screen; yet she shyed away from an open-air nude scene with nudists and got a stand-in. Socially nude was "too much" for Nicole?

The rapport between artist and nude model is portrayed quite intensily. It's as if he doesn't even see "her" at all; only his own creative vision.
Non-nudist viewers of the movie have often cited their own perception of nudity challenged by the performances. Great movie.

I have always had the idea that the movie was "cut" to appeal to a wider audience. I always thought the the girls got it on in the original version but that hit the cutting room floor.
Does anyone know if there a "Director's cut" of this film?

I like that Amanda D stayed faithful and realistic. That was one of my gripes against "The Beach" and "Cast Away" (the Tom Hanks film, not "Castaway" that you are talking about.)
"The Beach" is about an international group of free spirited dope smoking hippies living in a commune on the beach on a secluded island because they want to get away from civilization. Not one naked man or woman (or even a topfree women) walking around the place even once.
"Cast Away" had Tom Hanks stranded on a desert island for YEARS with only a volleyball to keep him company. Even after all of those years he still has a loincloth to cover himself; was he afraid a fish would see his ***?

Nope. That is the correct link to the movie; which I've seen two or three times. But I haven't read the book. My comment was about the "behind-the-scenes" story; not the story itself.

Earlier, while channel surfing, I stumbled upon a movie scene showing a young woman lying naked sunbathing on the roof of a castle.
No idea what movie it was, but I thought I recognized British actress Romola Garai who was also in Atonement.
Searching the Internet, I found the movie was 'I Capture the Castle' and actually featured a full-blown nudist character played by Tara Fitzgerald, who was also naked in 'Sirens,' a movie mentioned earlier on this thread.
I now wished I had seen the whole movie. I wonder if the film - which I had never heard of before, since it's British it probably never played in Asia - features lots of nudist scenes, or just the occasional short passage.
