Trustees And Clubs Weekly Report
February 8, 2008

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
AANR WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR TALENTS…By having you serve as a member of its Board of Trustees or as an Officer in the Association. You can be part of the team that sets the direction of YOUR association. Nominations are due by March 15. Nomination forms are available within the member and club services sections of http://www.aanr.com (http://www.aanr.com/) .
Board positions represent both members (on a region by region basis) and clubs (so many are allocated for each size of club). Those who are owners or members of boards of their respective clubs may serve as club trustees. Those who belong to clubs but do not have a position of ownership or leadership may serve as member trustees, as may associate and direct members, who have no club affiliation.

AANR, TNS, SFFB, and Beachgoers attend Brevard County,
Florida, hearing on behalf of clothes-free recreation on Playalinda Beach
Last night Carolyn Hawkins and I traveled to Brevard County Florida along with Chuck Rudolph, (whom we very much appreciate for driving us and for attending). Once there, we joined a group of between 50 and 75 naturists and nudists in holding signs that read “Yes to Nude Beaches.” Many were residents who spoke during the citizens comment time of the county commission meeting to ask officials’ help with ending recent stepped up enforcement of a county anti-nudity law by sheriff’s deputies. The deputies have been pressured to do so by a very small group of complainants.
This was one of very few hearings in my work for AANR when Carolyn and I did not speak. For strategic reasons, most of those who spoke were actual county residents and voters.
Those who spoke did an excellent job of making the point that county tax dollars would be much better spent on fighting problem crime and creating jobs, than sending deputies on a round trip that takes over an hour out to the far end of the Canaveral National Seashore where people enjoy nude sunbathing.
I want to congratulate Bob Allen of Titusville who did so much to organize this effort and strategy. Bob’s remarks to the commission last night were extremely well chosen and delivered with the utmost professionalism. Bob did equally well with journalists who interviewed him following the hearing.

I also want to thank and congratulate:

Patrick - who has consistently been working on the beach and with sheriffs’ officials;

The woman who spoke about crime outside her doorstep;

The woman who talked about the religious experience that being one with nature is for her;

The English couple who owns a sailboat which they dock in Brevard county for six months each year, spending tens of thousands on the local economy because they wish to be near
a nude beach;

Sam – A Florida native and AANR member who is now a medical doctor, and spoke about nudity within appropriate settings noting that Playalinda is such an appropriate setting;

The retired Air Force Colonel who has served our country for more than 20 years and did an incredible job of noting that counties should not be in the business of regulating what happens on federal property;

A beachgoer who made an impassioned plea on behalf of the bill of rights;

Cypress Cove – Both owner Ted Hadley who posted news of the hearing in club publications and at least a dozen residents who made the trip to Brevard to show support for the beach;

The Naturist Society and Naturist Action Committee – for supplying a great leader in Bob Allen, and with signs that were an effective visual during the meeting taping and as a backdrop when Bob spoke to cameras;

The South Florida Free Beaches – who helped substantially with getting news of the hearing out as far as Miami and beyond, with notable results;

You, the members of AANR – who helped make it possible for Carolyn and I to be there, and to provide the many, many volunteers who were there with pins as a way of saying thank you and a means of promoting an esprit de corps.

Last night re-opened the debate about nude beaches in Brevard County and did so in a very effective way, not only with government officials, but with media. In itself, it has not changed the law yet, but it has paved the way to prepare for county commission elections next November when three of the five commissioners will not be seeking office and new possibilities emerge.

More than any of those things, I believe it most shows how very powerful and professional the nude recreation community can be when it comes together and works together with a common purpose.

AANR-NW Government Affairs Team (GAT) DAY
The AANR-NW Government Affairs Team (GAT) is hosting a GAT Day on July 3 at the Willamettans Family Nudist Resort. This date was chosen to combine the GAT Day with the AANR-NW Convention.
This GAT Day event requires pre-registration. A check in the amount of $25 must be included with each registration form. AANR-NW GAT will pay the cost for each club to have one participant. The check will be returned to the club if pre-registered attendee participates on
July 3. The reason for this requirement is that the GAT DAY includes a two-hour Child Sexual Abuse, Education and Policy workshop that AANR-NW GAT must sign a contract for and pre-register participants. The only way a club will end up paying is if they pre-register and do not show up or wish to pay for additional participants. Individuals may pre-register and pay the required $25 fee.
An informational packet including the registration form has been sent to each AANR-NW club. If you are interested in attending please contact your club president. If you want to participate and pay your own fee you can request that a packet be sent to your home address. If you are not able to attend and would like to provide a scholarship for someone else to attend simply e-mail AANR-NW GAT Chair Shirley Gauthier via sherbog@msn.com (sherbog@msn.com).

AANR Members are Encouraged to Assist in Bill Tracking
New Mexico GA Chair Jim Brown, a Roadrunner Naturists member, wrote a letter to the sponsor of NM S 64. This bill relates to business; amends the liquor control act; imposes a fee on customers of sexually oriented businesses; which could impact nude performances in future nudist clubs in New Mexico. An excerpt from Jim’s letter, “SB 64 as introduced defines sexually oriented businesses as places which include anywhere where there are nude persons and entertainment. This would include a simple talent show at a family-oriented nudist club. I (we) would appreciate your help in amending your SB 64 bill to put the focus on places offering entertainment for the ‘sexual gratification of patrons’ instead of nudity.” Thank you, Jim!

Today 69 bills are on the Government Affairs Team “Legislative Tracking List.”

AANR StateNet Tracking List:
At this time, AANR is NOT asking for member assistance on any of the bills we are tracking. If you have information or feedback pertaining to these bills, please contact me or the AANR office. To view the AANR GA Legislative Tracking List, visit http://www.aanr.com/members.html (http://www.aanr.com/members.html), log in, and then click on the Government Affairs section located on the left. Each of the bills has been assigned to one of the following categories:

HIGH – These are serious bills that we are actively tracking because, as written, they present a direct or high probable threat to nude recreation.
o WATCH – These are bills which are less threatening, as written, but could become a problem with an amendment/s that add/delete just a few phrases. In some cases a bill on the Watch List may be neither good nor bad but AANR would want to notify members and/or clubs upon passage so that they could comply with the law.
o RESEARCH – These bills require additional research in order to evaluate properly. They may, for example, refer to unexplained statue numbers which must be reviewed or the bill is very lengthy and must be printed out to examine carefully for their affect.
o GOOD – These are bills which present an opportunity to help members and/or clubs.
