What is in your Spring Garden this year?

Tomatoes, corn, zuchinni, egg plant, okra, onions, strawberries, several kinds of squash, pole beans, bell peppers, and various sorts of hot peppers, lettuce, brussel sprouts, radishes, water melon and cantalopes.

Also, since we're moving to a new place, I'll put in some berry bushes and a few pear trees

This year, I'm going to see if I can work with the county extension agent and build, as close as possible, a year-round subsistance garden. Maybe a couple of hens to keep the bugs down, and for the eggs.

If I lived further out still, I'd really consider getting a Jersey milk cow, and use the excess for cheese and milk soap. But, we're sort of downsizing and moving in around people and the cow for sure would not be allowed, and maybe not the chickens.

Our goal, is, in about 3-years, to get as much off the grid and as self-suffcient as possible. We'll see.

I grew up, part of the time, down in Southern Illinois, and we relied on the garden, the milk cow, the well and some hunting and fishing and hardly went to the grocery store for much of anything, other than lard, molasses, and such. We'd trade for flour and so forth.

Hell you could live all day on a pocket full of grandma's biscuits left over from breakfast.

It' s still a long time until last frost here in Pennsylvania, so the Spring garden is, so far, limited to some herbs growing in a hydroponic setup and some cuttings from a favorite tomato plant that I'm trying to keep alive until I can plant them. I also have some poblano peppers started, which will eventually go in another hydroponic setup.

Broccoli, brussels sprouts, okra, and more tomatoes will pretty much round things out, the garden is small.

Our garden consists of tomatoes, corn, several types of peppers, cucumbers, several types of lettuce, English peas and other assorted beans, squash, cantalopes and honey dew melons along with mums to keep the bugs away.
