Now that we know who the likely US presidential candidates are, who do you think they should select for their running mates?

For the democrats I like Edwards for a good VP candidate, but then I also like him for AG. Other than that I really don't know.

For Republicans McCain might pick Leiberman to try and take some democrat votes away, but he might also pick Huckabee, which would be a better choice for him.

Most Democrats do not regard Lieberman as a Democrat--so Lieberman would drain no votes.

McCain, is already flip-flopping, and crayfishing, and trying to mute his pro George Bush adminstration stance on the Iraq invasion and occupation. He has a lot of baggage to get lost in transit and does not need another Isreali cat's-paw, war-hawk on the ticket with him! In fact, some might argue that Lieberman is the only Likud partymember serving in the U.S. Senate.

Look for Obama, if selected on the Democratic ticket, to pick a substantial, well-respected "Elder Statesman" type to balance his youth and fend off the "experience" and one or two otehr more subtle issues.

Look for Clinton, if selected on the Democratic ticket, to pick someone well respected by both parties, establishment, and capable of working in a bipartisan way to offset her supposed "liberal abrasiveness".

I don't look for Edwards to take the bottom half of either ticket, and, if we go into a brokered convention, he could still be the nominee. But, all that speculation aside, I'm not certain he would serve in either adminstration in any capacity. We'll see.

I think Obama might pick Edwards. He is closer to Obama politically than Clinton is, and Clinton, though she would bring in some women voters, has huge negative ratings and would be a liability. I'm not sure how well Clinton and Obama would get along. Clinton seemed to be trying to be friendly in the last debate, but not long after that she took a nasty turn.
Edwards could also help Obama carry some southern states.
Hey usmc1, are you thinking Gore for elder statesman? It would make a strong choice, if he would take the job. I don't know if he wants it.

I think McCain might pick Fred Thompson. McCain has said he will pick someone who shares his political values, and Thompson does. They are both actually good friends too, interestingly. They vacation together.
Huckabee may be running for VP right now, but I don't see that happening. He is so religious right, that he would turn off independants and be a liability.
Lieberman could be an asset. Yes, there are a lot of moderate Democrats who like him, even if the liberal base does not. Liberal democrats aren't going to vote for McCain anyway. But I don't think McCain will pick him. Lieberman is a Democrat (though officially Independant at present). Lieberman would motivate the Republican base to sit on their sofas and watch TV on election day. McCain is catching enough hell from the party base for not being conservative enough.
