Surrey, B.C. - Skinny dippers will be returning to the Newton wave pool after winning a five-year legal battle with the City of Surrey, B.C.

Don Pitcairn of Surrey's United Naturists says people who are uncomfortable with their bodies don't have to worry because the swims are private events.

He says the swims were cancelled in 2003 when the city said allowing nude swims was a workplace harassment problem for lifeguards.

I saw that in the paper as well. I think it's terrific that they won. Now to get to Vancouver on the day their swim is scheduled. They already have weekly swims in Vancouver, but the wave pool should be just that much better.

Nudist contract
By Kevin Diakiw - Surrey North Delta Leader - June 06, 2008
|
A group of nudists and the City of Surrey have fleshed out a contract for the use of the Newton Wave Pool, signifying a stretch of peace on a contentious issue.
Trouble began on March 31, 2003 when the city told the Skinnydipper Recreation Club it would no longer be able to rent the Newton Wave Pool for nude swims. The reasons were unclear, but the ban occurred days after a profile of the Newton Wave Pool event was published in The Leader.
Skinnydipper Recreation Club launched a lawsuit, and last November, claimed a victory.
B.C. Supreme Court Justice L. Paul Williamson had ruled the city’s refusal to rent the pool to the nudists as “patently unreasonable.”
He described the city hall reaction to The Leader’s feature article as unusual.
“For those who came of age in the 1960s, skinnydipping would hardly seem to be a threat to the moral fibre of western civilization,” Williamson wrote. “Not so, however, for some of the good burghers of Surrey.”
He ruled the city was acting beyond its authority in barring the group’s bookings.
The city continued to delay a formal booking until the two sides could agree upon the conditions of lease, including where members could sign up and who would be allowed to attend.
This week, the parties agreed on a long-term booking arrangement that will allow the group to use the Newton Wave Pool on the second Saturday of every month from 9:30 to 11 p.m., beginning July 12.
Admission is $10 per adult and youths under 19 are free.

Good for them! Hopefully the City of Seattle and its Parks and Rec. will see this and allow the local swims there to continue when scheduled. They were siting lifeguard issues as well. (They felt guards should be 21 or older.)

Wish we could join you but we live on the east coast. We'll have to work it into our schedule next time we visit Vancouver.
