An Oregon man who used to be a woman says he is pregnant with a baby girl.

Thomas Beatie's first-person story appears in the April issue of The Advocate, a Los Angeles-based newsmagazine for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered people.

According to the story, Mr. Beatie was born a woman but decided to become a transgender male and legally changed his sex to male. He had his breasts surgically removed and started bimonthly testosterone injections, but kept his vagina.

Now identifying as male, Mr. Beatie legally married Nancy Beatie, the story says. The pair wanted a biological baby but Ms. Beatie was unable to carry a child. So they decided Mr. Beatie would carry the child.

So much for the 'female' of the species being the child-bearers exclusively any longer.

Well if Mr. Beale still kept "his" vagina then anatomically "he" is still a she.

I would think that the bimonthly testosterone injections would interfere with "his" monthly cycle, making pregnancy difficult or impossible -- if not downright dangerous. Apparently not. But, the human endocrine system is nothing to fool around with. :cuckoo:

Well since the vagina is merely the gateway, one can assume that if the womb was intact, and she was still producing eggs, and sperm met egg in the womb, it could happen, I guess.

Any transgenders here want to take this on?

I'd think large doses of tetosterone would not have anything to do with it--other than helping develop "secondary" male characteristics and maybe suppressing menses. And, if she hasn't had her uterus or fallopian tubes removed she would certainly continue to ovulate. Ovulation and menses, while related, are not absolutely dependent on each other--doesn't a human female produce eggs independent of menses?

I'm a little rusty on my biology, but just because all the parts are in place, I'm not sure that they would work properly in the presence of abnormally high testosterone.

"Doesn't a human female produce eggs independent of menses?"

If memories serves, the menses is the sloughing off of the wall of the uterus, which was being prepared for a fertilized egg when the egg is released. The fact that there was no implantation because no fertilization occurred is what leads to the menses. So, it would seem that one would have to produce an egg first.

Any ladies here want to take a crack (no pun intended) at this? :o

That is correct.

If she/he still has his/her vagina and utereus intact, pregnancy is possible.

I hope any possible hormone regimen "he" may be on has been halted during this crucial time
