Wanted: A thousand or more cheeky volunteers willing to bare all in the name of art. Nudists and naturists need not apply.

In Mexico City he photographed 18,000 people all at once and all of them naked.

Now controversial contemporary artist Spencer Tunick is coming to Ireland where he is hoping the Irish will dare to bare their naughty bits in their droves to become part of his latest mass-nude project.

Tunick, who has been refused permits to display his artwork in America, is offering Irish hopefuls the chance to become part of his first back to back city art project in both Dublin and Cork this June.

Volunteers in both cities will peel off for a mass photo-shoot as part of the Dublin Docklands Development of Authority programme of events and the Cork Midsummer Festival. In return participants will receive a limited-edition photograph from the event they attended.

"I am definitely not looking for nudists or naturists to take part in Ireland," Tunick told the Irish Independent from New York yesterday.

"We don't want to work with them. We want everyday people, not exhibitionists." Nor is he too concerned that the events will attract gawkers and voyeurs.

"Why would anyone want to get up that early to watch? I think there are plenty of places people can see nude people and pay money to watch," he said.

He is hoping to get about 800 volunteers for his Cork shoot but in Dublin he hopes to do better much better than the 1,500 participants who volunteered for a recent project in Gateshead, Newcastle.

To register to participate in either event, volunteers should visit the website, spencertunickireland.ie (http://www.spencertunickireland.ie/) . The Cork installation takes place on Tuesday, June 17 while the Dublin event will be staged four days later on Saturday, June 21.

I find these quotes odd from the Spencer article. Does he not like Nudists?

Honestly, his work is getting old hat - seen it once, seen it all. Variations on theme, but little more.

I guess that one of his selling points is exactly that, that these are ordinary people and not people who are used to being naked anyway. Or worse, paid for the job. The latter is so evident from H&E, for example, where commercial models are used to give an air of naturism to the mag - it ain't work. So Tunick may have similar motives, to make sure the authenticity of the pictures are guaranteed. No big deal.

I saw the movie "naked states" about Spencer Tunic's project to take nude photos in the 48 continental states. He did a shoot at a nudist beach and it was difficult. A few people were clowning around and not being cooperative. They were more inclinded to goof off than pose and it seemed to leave a bad taste in his mouth.

I'm pretty sure that "ordinary people" look pretty much the same as the rest of us without clothes.

Perhaps he finds that non-nudists are more compliant in following directions because they are not comfortable in their surrounds?

I was in the Melbourne shoot in 2001, and it was one of the most exhilerating experiences I've ever had.

If anyone gets the chance, I'd recommend that you give it a try!

How can Tunick tell who's a naturist and who's not? Oh I see, the tan lines, I guess.
Am interested, but as usual, he's doing this in the 'wrong' part of the world.

I think his issue with nudists is that he's afraid that they will just start lounging around and goofing around. I was part of his Miami shoot and he also didn't really like tan lines.
