Nude Sunbathers Shock Rafters (http://www.kcra.com/news/16250290/detail.html)
I'll be intersted to see if they give any weight to the rafters complaints. I wish they could share the land and not bother each other.

Simon, thanks for continuing to post the links to these media stories about people being shocked, dismayed, appalled and disgusted by the presence of a nude image (German textbook) or heaven forbid, a nude body in nature (the rafters).
I hate to think that a majority of US citizens are so anti-nude! It's almost as if this is a recent thing..I can't imagine similar stories coming out if we turned the clocks back to 1969 or 1970. I guess all those carefree hippies have aged and become outraged.

Only aged.

But did you notice how brief the news article is? The station obviously thought it was of only minor significance.

They said that they do not have the manpower to respond to complaints, I wonder if that is an excuse because they are not bothered by the nude sunbathers. Wishful thinking?

Well, thoses hippies, we talk a lot about them, but they were a small minority in thoses times. In many ways, theses times were more conservative than today. However, 1968 was a year where a lot of things happened. For exemple in France, Mai 1968 is a symbol of a libertarian revolution that still have a profund effect on attitudes today in France.
But around 1980, when Ronald Reagan was elected, he made a conservative revolution that also have profund effects in the USA today.
I understand that some people are still shocked by nudity, what can you expect in a country where Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Dr Laura and other very right wing people dominate the medias? And besides that the USA is not the only place where a lot of people are not confortable with nudity. The same reaction could happen in Canada, Mexico, South America...most of the world...
On the other hand, there are a lot of people who are far less prude than before. Just think of people who put their sexual performances on websites like youporn and the popularity of such sites. Today being a porn actor is not something very well paid because there is so much people willing to do it that they don't have to pay them a lot. That's a huge change since the times Playboy magazine was considered a scandal for a lot of people.
I do not want to link here nudism and sexuality, but clearly, being nude in a movie or in a magazine does not have the same stigma as 40 years ago. There are also plenty of aldult meeting websites where people do not hesitate to put a nude photo of themselves.

Just heard one of our local radio stations report on this item. The reporters pretty clearly thought it was funny that rafters were bothered. The comment from the state officials responsible for that portion of the river runs like this: that remote area has been used by nude sunbathers for many years; the agencies priority is public safety, so it's unlikely they would be able to respond to such a complaint; and those who are bothered should consider rafting on another portion of the river.

Yes, but you are in North California, one of the most progressive and tolerant place in the US. I do not think the situation would have been the same in Arkansas...

I glad that I live in Northern California, that progressive and tolerant place. I have come face to face with the rangers while nude and they just smile and keep on going.
Lets hear it for California!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glad I do not live in Arkansas.

My wife and I were watching the evening news on TV when they reported on this item. She didn't quite catch what the anchor was saying, and I attempted to clarify for her that rafters on a portion of the river long used by nude sunbathers have been calling for them to be arrested. She didn't quite catch that either, and replied indignantly, "They SHOULD arrest those rafters who are bothering the nude people."
My thought exactly.

I like that reply, they should arrest the rafters if they bother the nude sunbathers.

I saw this story reported yesterday on KCAL 9 in Los Angeles. It was only a very short piece showing a boater commenting on the fact there could be children in the boat that could be harmed by seeing naked people and one comment from a nude man about how everyone is born nude.
The off screen reporter stated that since the rangers did not have the manpower to monitor the area it was unlikely there would be any arrests.
When I saw the story it was in the 10 o’clock hour and obviously had been severely edited. When they went back to the studio the reporters made some comments about you never see beauty contest winners at these beaches, those you do see would be better to cover up, and the sports reporter saying it would be best for him to forget the story was on.
Talk about your stereotypical news story. It would be almost funny if it were not so sad that so many people have this reaction to anyone being seen nude in a normal everyday setting but have no objection to going to strip clubs and viewing porn sights.

Why does the statement about "no beautiful people on the nude beach or at the nudist resort" always come up? It's so sad that people are so hung up on beauty to say such ignorant things. Isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder anyhow?
