You can't even really see anything. If your going to boycott Starbucks, do it because a cup of coffee costs five dollars. Some people have too much time on their hands.

I have never heard of a two-tailed mermaid. The "Resistance" says that the logo looks like a prostitute with her legs spread. I have not met many people who are that flexible to be able to spread their legs to the side and up their bodies so their feet are about at the level of their shoulders. These people just have their minds way too far in the gutter. Of course that is how it usually happens. The people who protest the most are the ones who see sex in every innocuous picture. And for some reason, it seems to be the ones who should be purest of mind. Is that hypocritical?

I happen to enjoy the occasionnal Venti , white chocolate mocha whith an extra shot. I would have never even given their logo a second glance to notice if it hadn't been for that article. How many times have groups like that drawn attention and curiosity to the things they want people to avoid?

Bob S.
Some older depictions of mermaids used the two tailed design. These days most people think of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" as the only design.
BTW I love how they said she looks like a prostitute with her legs spread, yes because non-prostitutes NEVER spread their legs for any reason.

Seriously, if this is the biggest concern of this Christian group, than I haven't heard the news about the war being over, the economy picking up, gas prices plummeting, murders stopping completely!!!
Its a mermaid people, get over it!!!

1) Jerry Falwell?????.....who stated that one of the teletubbies is GAY because of the design on the top of it's head.
2) Pat Robertson??????....Who stated that Winnie The Pooh should put on pants so that children don't walk around without pants on

Ummmm ... so what if Starbucks did decide to put a stylized non pornographic picture of a prostitute on its logo?
It ain't exactly the end of civilization. Eh?
I think a real Christian group would get more worked up about churches having to hold fundraisers to pay for the uninsured medical care of its members. Or to give GI's in Iraq in Afghanistan the body armor they were promised 5 years ago. Or to provide PTSD counciling to GI's who have been denied it by the US Government because of a policy (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080515/ap_on_go_ot/veterans_e_mail) of deliberately under-diagnosing it in order to reduce disability payments - and to allow troubled soldiers to be forced to return to duty under stop-loss.
Frankly, these people obsessing about a non issue like Starbucks in the face of the real crisis facing our society aren't Christians. They are A-holes.

Well, some of them are, but so are lots of others of every creed, color and persuasion you can name. I am a Christian, but this group is over the top! What is really INSANE are all the above mentioned who willingly pay $5.00 for a cup of coffee. That's the real joke!

This has happened before. The current two-tailed mermaid is censored from her original bare breast design. This is coming up again because with the release of Pike's Place Blend they put the classic logo on the cups and sleeves. These protesters have nothing better to do. This will go away in a minute. Also, is it worth stating that a cup of coffee does not cost $5? A cup of coffee costs the same at Starbucks as it does (now) at most other places. The lattes and other espresso drinks cost more except the Americano because there is no milk. It bothers me when people make uneducated statements... although I am sure I am guilty of it too sometimes. :-)

I don't agree that paying $5 for a cup of coffee is crazy.................
First...I visit Starbucks quite often and you'd have to buy the largest cup of coffeemochajavadoubleshot5pump1/2cafdecaflowfatfrappachinoyadiyada to spend that much.
A "cup of coffee" costs less than $2. It's not to everyone's taste or in everyone's budget to spend 2 bucks for a cup of coffee....hell...you can get a cup of coffee at 7-11 for 79 cents but I've had both and I'll pay the extra for a cup of coffee I like better.
Talk about crazy/insane..........$10 to see a movie, $20 for two small popcorns and two small drinks,...almost $5 a gallon for diesel...$100 dollars a month for satellite TV.......where do I stop!? We pay for what it is we want.
What's crazy/insane is to state someone's nuts because they are paying for what they want. You really don't think they are going to lower the prices on all the stuff we want if we stop buying it....do you? They'll wait us out and when we start to buy it again.........they'll charge us more! :D
and........I'm not usually a Croydon fan but.............I'm a Christian too and I didn't take offense to his comment. His comment was "those Christian's" not ALL Christians.

I work at Starbucks and I actually had someone come in, right after we got the retro cups in, and say the cup was pornographic. I honestly told him they were just bare breast. No big deal. The guy just looked at me, got his cup of coffee and left.
My roommate also works for Starbucks and she told me she heard the same thing from some people.

Good point FireProf about how much EVERYTHING is costing us. I've stopped going to the movies (after 40 years going on at least twice a week); I stopped buying concession items over 20 years ago--that has ALWAYS been a rip-off. I, like most, am stuck with buying gasoline regardess of the price as long as I work (too far for a bicycle) but I have cut way back on the trips I make going anywhere except for work. YES, prices DO drop if enough people stop buying a product, but that will never happen again because most people now are use to paying out the kazoo for what they like instead of giving it up.

Good grief! Just demonstrates that Islam is not the only religion with radical sects.
I long for the days when religion was simply a non-issue, and those who couldn't "live and let live" were usually laughed out of town.

Even I don't object to the Starbucks logo.
I was in Copenhagen last week, and I saw the Little Mermaid statue again (for the umpteenth time) and I have never objected to that either. For those who haven't seen her, unlike her Disney character, the Danish bronze portrays her as topless - which is logical for a mermaid.
I did read in one of the local Danish papers that the police in one town had required a shopkeeper to remove a poster from a window display which showed a photo of female star from Bat Watch fully topless, and I approved of that. That may have been acceptable in downtown Copenhagen, which is extremely liberal and "hip", but small town Denmark is still surprisingly conservative.
The weather was gorgeous for May and the beaches were packed - especially on last Monday which is a Danish national holiday. I visited three popular beaches in all (Stillinge Strand, Karrebæksminde and one in Køge) and in spite of the high temperature and glorious sunshine, not one of the scores of women I saw was topless. That really did surprise me and further confirmed my belief that toplessness (among textile women) is gradually becoming deeply unfashionable in many parts of Europe. Not that this is an issue for nudists.

Well put!
Where is the rock pile these people crawl out from under - there has to be a central core rock because this mass insanity has to have a common source - so we can remove the rock and thusly, the source of these small, petty, pathetic minds ... then a few might awake from the stupor they are in and actually begin to lead happy, healthy, productive lives - the rest well, they will pass eventually and can be ignored until such occurs.

I was in Starbucks yesterday. There was a woman commenting on the logo. I don't know if this is true or not, but according to her comments the original depicted nipples and they made a slight change to make the mermaid's hair cover the area of controversy, but still plenty of exposed breast. Her comment was "This new logo doesn't show her...(waving of hands around her breast area because she couldn't say the word nipple) anymore." I gathered from her demeanor that she still did not approve of the exposed female breast depicted in brown and white on a cup of coffee, which children ought not drink any way:D. Caffeine and anything remotely sexual = bad for children. I had to tell the cashier that I aproved the new (old, retro) logo.

I'v been in Sunday School for 29 years, attend a Baptist church 50 weeks a year (yea, take two Sundays off a year is all), I don't think there could be a more consistent and 'avid' church go-er on this board than me.
Now, having said that...
It isn't ALL of us. There are zealots in all aspects of life: Religion, hobbies, sexual escapades, political circles, etc.
Zealots are zealots and they drive us all nuts no matter what they are a Zealot about. As for us "average or mainstream" individuals, the zealots tend to speak for us mostly because THEY ARE ALWAYS SPEAKING.
It's just a cartoon of an IMAGINARY character/creature, and it's no big deal. This reminds me of the sillyness a few years back about the logo of Proctor and Gamble (it was supposed to be "Satanic").

You're a Christian - like the majority of people on these forums...
The members of sects like that in the news article always like to refer to themselves as "Christians" - as if they have some monopoly on the name, have some insights and epiphanies denied to all of us infidels, and are the only group who can call themselves as such - even though they inevitably behave, act and talk in such non-Christian and anti-Christian ways.
A lot of times it would seem that they could be making such nuisances of themselves in such ridiculous and extreme ways simply in order to draw more attention to themselves - like "Alien abductees" and "Gay Mardi Gras participants" they probably have such empty and non-productive lives, that they have to join such groups and make the news, just so they don't feel so useless and invisible !!!
Thank God I'm agnostic!

FYI... 'The Resistance' is NOT, I repeat NOT a Christian group! They are an activist group that says they are a Christian group for their convenience only. A little research will show this. It will also show that this 'group' is a very small bunch of people.
Personally, as a true Christian, I am opposed to pagan symbols and such, but truthfully, the Starbucks logo is just silly looking. It is not offensive to anyone except those with a sense of taste.

Just about every group of Christians claims the same about other Christian groups. The majority of "true" Christians would say Christian naturists are not "true" Christians, either.

And a true Scotsman too, no doubt...
Does that mean you are also opposed to "Christmas Trees"?
And Easter eggs, Easter Bunnies, the Star of Bethlehem, three wise men, virgin birth etc etc. All pagan symbolism.
In fact the entire Jesus story is based on earlier pagan religions. Mithra, Horus, anyone?

Damn it anyway. They don't have the new logo here in Vancouver. I want one of those cups! And i want to see what people around here think of it. It would be fun to watch someone get all annoyed over a silly cup. :-P
Personally, i like the new logo! Although i really do like the more graphic original one. I'm a bit of a brand/logo freak. I love logos... the design, the beauty & simplicity of the line... I guess it's the wannabe graphic artist in me!
