I live in an apartment complex that has maybe 500 apartments. There is a large community center with an exercise area, pool, hot tub, and sauna. I was reading the "rules" and for the co-ed sauna it indicated that users should disrobe and use a towel "if required." I consider this very liberal down here in Virginia. Anyway, thought I would share. I am prone to think that if I used it with just a towel someone would freak.

Go for it and let us know how it goes. I used to do that at an apartment complex I lived in no one minded there but everyone is different. Goodluck

That is very liberal for here. I wonder if they intended it to be naked or in swimsuit when they said disrobe. By the way, which part of the city do you live in? I'm in the Kempsville area about a mile away from our favorite televangelist at Regent. If you want to be more specific about the name of the apartment complex, you could PM me.

Wow. Someone actually knows how a sauna should be used!

Have you ever seen anyone using the sauna?

I hope for you it means that you can go naked in the sauna. For hygienic reasons you put a towel under need your bottom.
Wearing swimsuits in sauna is also very unhygienic. The whole reason of the sauna is that you sweat all the toxics out of your skin, swimsuits will keep the toxics on your skin, besides that is yucky and sticky.

Back in the 80's My uncle lived in a large complex with a sauna in Bakersfield, Ca. I don't recall ever reading any posted rules but whenever i went over there was always someone using it nude males and females.

Are the rules your Building's rules or the rules/instructions posted by the sauna manufacturer? In our local YMCA the sauna has a sign posted by the sauna people that explains the use of it. The first item is to disrobe, then goes on to explain the proper use of the facility. HOWEVER- the rules of the YMCA states that swimsuits or other attire (shorts, t-shirts, etc.) MUST BE WORN! It would eliminate some confusion if they took the sauna company's sign down, but it's still there. I noticed not many people use it, but I might guess it's because anybody that tried it while wearing a pair of gym shorts and t-shirt just decided that it wasn't worth the effort.

It's always worth the effort. I take a sauna most weeks at my gym and everyone there keeps their shorts on - even though there are separate saunas for men and women. Shorts don't spoil the experience for me.

In my last house, I had a sauna installed in an upstairs room and even there I always wore either towelling shorts or a giant bath towel even if I was home alone. It was just a habit.

Just because you can't go nude doesn't mean you can't benefit from or enjoy a sauna.

I can't even imagine how many creepy-crawlies must be living in your hidden areas, Stu. I really do feel badly for you, honest! I hope your opinion changes someday and you are able to enjoy body freedom without regret.

I'm happy that this is only your personal opinion. I can have sauna only naked to enjoy it. Normally I'm not alone in sauna. I have two saunas (in different addresses) and when I swim in public pool I use the sauna there. In public sauna there is sign no swimsuits are allowed in sauna. (of course towel under you is allowed)

But public saunas in Finland are nearly always single-sex, aren't they? In many other countries, like here in the UK, it is more common for public saunas to be mixed-sex.

I think it behooves us to try to test new waters and do without the suits every opportunity that comes our way. THE PENDULUM HAS SWUNG SO FAR THE OTHER WAY, THAT EVERYONE SHOULD MAKE A CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO PRESENT THE CLOTHESFREE spirit whenever possible.

Stu, is being nude somehow different if it is same-sex?

Sorry, I didn't realize people were commenting on this thread. I didn't receive any notifications.

Bob S. - I live at Linkhorn Bay Apartments on Birdneck Road. The clubhouse here has a workout room, hot tub, pool, two lockerrooms and that sauna. The sign clearly says to only use a towel "if required" but to otherwise disrobe.

Luvnaturism - I have never, ever seen anyone use it at all.

boomdriver - These instructions are posted on a sign on the wall next to the sauna door so they didn't come with the sauna; at least I don't think they did. It makes me want to ask what "appropriate swimming attire" means on the pool sign since I think nude is appropriate.

Of course it is. That's why we have separate locker rooms, toilets etc for males and females.

I've been back a few times but honestly I have not had the courage to take the sauna nude. I just am a bit nervous about the contrast between what the sign says and what people's expectations are.

If you feel nervous about it bring a towel and sit on it and drap one end over you if you feel the need. ONe advantage is it would be quick and easy to cover up if someone were to come in. I have found that the sauna is a highly under utilized facility at most of the places I have been. Right now up here in the North country I am wishing I had built a sauna. I am thinking that I may have to do that next year.

the person above me is right about the sauna being under used. here, at florida state university there are 40,000 students and typically i am in the sauna by myself. The only sad part is you have to wear shorts or trunks since it is co-ed.

To be honest I only enjoy the sauna if I am nude. And it is also the aim of it . Make people sweat , eliminate toxins and enjoy the heat. Of course the use of a towel is also a must , not only for hygenic reasons, but also to dry the body from time to time.

That should have no bearing on the matter, as has been stated, saunas are meant to be used naked, no matter who is in them.

Sadly we're not much better in the UK, there are some non-naturist nude saunas in the UK, following the Scandinavian principle of nude detoxification with hot sauna followed by a cold plunge pool.

I love reading the stories of the uptight prude Brits who go to places like Holland and Germany only to find naked people walking around, they make such a big issue of it, but the old saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" comes into play.

Hi ya'll. I have failed to provide an update so here goes. I've gone to the recreation center a couple times since my last post. Once with my roommate when I simply wrapped a towel around myself. It was comfy and enjoyable. My roommate had no idea that one could even use any sauna or steam room nude. After that, about two Saturday's ago, I went with another friend to workout, enjoy the indoor pool, then warm up in the sauna. This time we did not undress because there were three little bratty girls running around and we didn't want to risk any kind of issues with them. We are going back this Saturday and intend to both be undressed. We've gotten more comfortable that nobody is going to freak out. We've seen others with just towel wraps. As is typical, the people who are not American - there are a large number of Europeans living here - seem more inclined to go au natural. I'm not sure WHY Europeans are choosing to live in the neighborhood I live in but whatever, they are nice and I enjoy having some variety here. :-) I know that during the summer, since this is a resort town, we get a lot of students from overseas but they rarely stay around after the season. Anyway... just wanted to update ya.

So yesterday my workout partner and I went over to the center. After running a few miles and enjoying the pool we took the sauna nude. There were a few other folks in the center but nobody came in while we were in there. It was absolutely comfortable not wearing swim trunks in there. We plan to continue. I have to admit we were a little nervous at first but realized that we would just wrap our towels around if needed.

sauna's steam rooms and swimming pools should always be used nude, its just no fun any other way, thats why I don't visit the public pools near me they all require clothing in all areas YUK!

I sauna regularly, and go naked where possible. My own opinion is that the experience is much better when you are naked. A piece of clammy cloth wrapped round you just gets in the way.

Any costume or towel will insulate you from the heat of the sauna, and interfere with the experience. The whole point is to get as hot as possible as quickly as possible!

So after reading this thread, I made it a point to review the rules that are posted outside of the sauna at my current gym.

The facility is only a few months old an not a lot of members are signed up, so I've never seen anyone use the sauna. It sits opposite the showers in the mens lockeroom, so it's not co-ed. Nothing about being required to wear "appropriate" attire in the sauna.

What I thought was interesting was that my former gym (both gyms being two different major chains) did require bathing suits in their sauna. And it too was in the mens lockeroom?! So I wonder if these type of policies are set at the corporate or local levels?? Anyway, I'll have to make it a point of getting naked in the sauna next time.

I agree. I use a sauna frequently at home and at the gym. The gym's sauna is co-ed, so clothing is required. I find the sauna at home to be better, but have no trouble using the clothes sauna at the gym even though it is only a 90% solution. Sure, it would be better if clothing were not required, but I'll get over it.
