Hello all. I am trying to help a friend see what is wrong with his computer. It all seems to work, but the monitor says to check monitor cables or signal. I looked at the plug that goes into the computer and it seems to have one prong missing, i checked another monitor and it had the same thing, is that usual? the plug on the back of the computer has 15 holes in it, I'm confused on that? any help will be appreciated.
thanks

It could be either the monitor, or the video card. If you can use another monitor to see if it works or not. If not then its probably the video card. If you know how to, and have an extra video card you can pull that one out and see if that is the problem.

Although make sure all connections are tight. Some monitors you can remove the cord at the back on the monitor as well, so make sure to check that one as well.

How old is the computer?

If you have swapped monitors and problem persists, try removing video card and reseating it. Make sure all cables are making firm connections.

If you're using the video connection on the motherboard, I'd pick up a cheap video card and set that up. The last puter I built had a video connection that worked directly off the motherboard and I suspect many off the shelf puters still are set up that way.
