The best places to get naked with the locals (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27682204/)

This would have been a better article if they didn't keep categorizing people into the "one's you want to see naked" and "those you don't". It's this kind of mentality that causes body image problems for people.

Still, all that aside I would like to visit some of the places on the list.

1. Spaworld, Japan
Yes. I prefer a mixed environment, but would enjoy socializing with guys from a different culture.
2. Turkish Baths, Budapest
Definite yes.
3. Loveparade, Germany
I'll pass. Definite sexual undertones - and overtones - from what I hear.
4. Burning Man, Nevada
Definitely on my Bucket List, although I hear there's been less nudity recently.
5. Bay to Breakers, San Francisco
Only with some friends. I have a thing about a bunch of textile onlookers
6. Blue Lagoon, Iceland
Definite yes.
7. Hadaka Matsuri, Japan
I'll pass. Getting knocked around by a bunch of dudes is not my idea of fun.
8. No Pants Day, New York City
Seems pretty pointless to me.
9. World Naked Bike Ride
Same as #5.
10. Spencer Tunick
I missed one, and am still kicking myself.
11. Blacks Beach, San Diego
Florida nude beaches are much closer to me.

My personal number 1 would be that huge nude beach/resort in Croatia (I can't remember the name). Maybe one day...

The writer takes too many shots at nude values to be considered a beneficial article, in my humble opinion. Which is sometimes wrong.

Thanks Simon. In reality this is just a list of "(best?) places to get naked", not more, not less, definitively not best! Not necessarily nudist places - just places.

NB 1. Japanese Onsen (there have been topics on this before) needs more than a japanese/english dictionary. It's not uncommon that japanese leave as soon as a foreigner enters, now you guess why (no: it's not anywhere close to racism or something like that). There are (some) mixed Onson, but these are difficult to find.

NB 6. Blue Lagoon - I thought it was stricly clothing-only? Only the remoter hot springs (where few if any tourists ever visit) are used au-naturel, you need to search quite hard on the net to find info.

NB 10. Spencer Tunick - I understood that he doesn't "want" nudists/naturists to sign up (supposedly says somewhere also on his website) because these ppl are not natural enough or are in it for being just nude instead of being in it for the sake of art. Something like it.

That all happened when he shot at a nudist beach in California (I think) back when he did his "Naked States" project. He was also much less well known back than and several of the people who they recruited at the beach to be in his shots didn't really care about his art. They were just nudists who were on the beach that day and when asked were of the opinion "well I'm here and I'm naked so why not?" Spencer is a huge perfectionist (I've been in one of his shoots) and lots of these nudists were just goofing around, not following his directions and others who happened to be in the background didn't want to clear his shot when asked.

This is kind of sad to read. But I do understand that Mr. Tunick is a photo perfectionist as mentioned and can see why he probably does not want nudists or naturists to participate in his photo shoots. Those ones at Black's Beach that day gave us a bad name in other words from what I am reading here. That's a shame because that will simply make it tougher on the nudists who really do legitimately appreciate nudity in art form and would like to be in one or more of his shoots. And perfectionists such as him do take their work quite seriously and can get a bit on the impatient side when people do not follow instructions. I know because I have and still do work with people like him.

Hey Simonsebs. Nice list here, although some of the places mentioned I might be a little leary about going to. Thanks anyway and good work!

I saw the footage of when and how this happened (which I thought, btw, was Gunnison). It was quite clear that the nudists there were being non-compliant. They were jumping around, running off and just generally goofing around. I can understand this because I've been photographed at a nudist resort with other nudists, and the other nudists were "all over the place" and just having fun with the situation. But I think the Gunnison nudists did not understand quite clearly that Spencer T. was NOT going for a nudist pic; he was going for nude art. He was quite obviously flustered by two things: the fact that the nudists there just didn't seem to get what he was trying to do, and the fact that he had been asked to himself go nude to take the pics on the beach. Spencer is not a nudist; he is merely a photographer that takes nudes.

I don't believe he prohibits or discourages individual nudists from participating in his shoots; but I do think he is done photographing nudist groups in their environment. Hence his "no nudism" rule applies more to nudist situations rather than nudist people themselves.

Along as they do what is asked, except for the lack of tan lines, how the hell is Spencer going to be able to tell the difference betweenn a nudist and a naked person?

I was in his central Melbourne shoot (Oct 2001) - involving 4300 naked people. I'm sure that I wasn't the only nudist there, but everyone was very co-operative, except for the one clothed evangelist who was dragged away by police!

Nice to revisit this.

One comment about the 'Bare to Breakers' run in San Francisco.

I have done it. Even though I have been a nudist all my life, I actually fealt a little uncomfortable for myself and all the people who did the run nude. People running out to snap pictures, most of which I know did not get my face in them, but about chest down, and also the constant gawking. At the end (the park), once you cross the finish, you will be hassled by cops if you do not IMMEDIATELY cover up.

Some nude runners did stop to do media interviews and such, but you can tell by the camera angle and the questions (more like comments to get a rise out of you), they are not doing it for the right reasons, or a reason which would promote our beliefs.

Then again, what else could you expect from the city that brings us all sorts of filth and disgust? The Bare to breakers isn't an opportunity to be nude in public, as the author suggests. It is just another 'shock and awe' moment for some people. I won't ever do it again.
