This kind of surprises me... My wife is from the Philippines and based on everything she's told me and my own visit there, even wearing a just bathing suit is kind of unusual. When my wife used to go to the beach while living there, it was common to swim in shorts and a t-shirt. During my visit, my niece was in a bikini and got lots of odd looks.

Good for them if things are changing.

It's always interesting - and a bit sad - to see how cultures that were once nude ended up doing a complete 180 degree turn after being "colonized". Anyway, below is a news segment of the - masked - nude run.

Arnabas,

Yes, Filipinos are on the whole very conservative and Catholic, but this is some kind of tradition that has been going on for a long time.

Like in Taiwan, former students of the top university play a nude basketball (or is it volleyball) game on campus late each New Year's Eve. It's never been on TV - which would scare people away - but it gets coverage in the papers each year.

It really must not get much coverage. As I said, my wife grew up in the Philippines. She was there until she was about 23 and she doesn't know about that at all.

Good that things are changing though and they're a little less conservative.
