View Full Version : Sleeping Nude In Winter

Although I have slept nude off and on since I moved out of my parents house, I would only sleep nude in the warmer months (May through September). Starting in October, I would pull out the PJs or sweats to wear. I was brought up believing that the only way for the body to stay warm was to keep it fully covered in clothes. In Oct '07, I decided to give nude sleeping a try in the winter. After sleeping nude for the last 2 winters, I have discovered some interesting things about myself:

- When I would sleep in PJs or sweats my feet would always be cold, so I would end up either putting on a pair of socks, or laying a heavy blanket over my feet. Since sleeping nude, my whole body (for the most part) stays the same temperature. If my feet are cold then my legs and chest are also cold. So no more blankets for just my feet. A couple of heavy blankets, and I sleep comfortable.

- When I would sleep in PJs or sweats, I would sometimes get to warm and start sweating. This would lead to me catching a cold. When sleeping nude, if my body starts getting warm, I end up tossing blankets off in my sleep. If I end up tossing to many off during the course of the night, I simply wake-up long enough to pull a cover back over me and go back to sleep. When I got sick last year it only lasted for 5 days, instead of 3 weeks (like it did when I wore flannel PJs to bed). Apparently, the virus likes to be kept in a very warm environment.

- When the house temperature goes below 74 degrees, my shoulders start getting cold when sleeping nude. After reading this site, I have come to realize that all I have to do is pull the blankets over my shoulders, and then I am comfortable again. Seems that the human body likes all parts to stay the same temperature. If only one part of the body is cold and all other parts are warm, it does not have a way to send extra heat to only one part of the body.

- When getting up in the middle of a cold winters night, it is advisable to have a bathrobe nearby. When getting out of the covers, it feels like I am standing naked in front of an open refrigerator. A nice flannel bathrobe works nicely to help keep the chill off.

- When nude, It is always good to know where your flashlight is if the power goes out. One morning I woke up at 4am. I had just finished breakfast in the nude, when the power went out in the whole neighborhood. I spent almost 3 minutes walking only an inch at a time (did not want to hit any exposed body parts to tables or cabinets) until I got to where the flashlight was stored. Thank goodness the batteries were in good condition. I then had to shower and shave by flashlight. The lights came back on an hour later.

I would like to know what other people have discovered when they started sleeping nude.

You will soon get use to it as it's the only way to sleep!

For me sleeping nude is just more comfortable than having clothes pulling at you and constricting circulation all of the time. If it's cold I just add another blanket.

Happy Crow,
I've been sleeping nude for so long now I don't remember any other way to sleep. If you continue to sleep nude in all seasons, you will be amazed at how well your body adjusts to temp changes/differences. It's 65 degrees in my house and I got up 1/2 hour ago, I'm feeling "toasty". :D
Happy Nude Year.

- When I would sleep in PJs or sweats my feet would always be cold, so I would end up either putting on a pair of socks, or laying a heavy blanket over my feet.

I have found that when sleeping nude I can add a pair of socks to stay a little warmer. Keeping my feet warm keeps the rest of my body warmer. I love sleeping nude and do year round.

I sleep nude all year round. It's a bit cold getting up every 2 to 3 hours in the bedroom and bathroom at 60 degrees. The bed's nice and warm though, with 4 layers of blankets and a heating pad underneath.

I've been sleeping nude for years.
In winter, I often use extra blankets but under all that, I'm butt naked.
Sometimes in the middle of the night, if it gets too warm, I'll get up walk about and look out the windows to see if more snow has fallen.
After a few minutes I'm ready to jump back into bed, nude.

Sleeping nude is wonderful for a variety of reasons. Freshly laundered cotton sheets and an appropriate blanket or bed spread just make it that much more enjoyable.

Even flannel sheets make a nice warm atmosphere for nude winter sleeping. My feet normally are cold at first, so I try to warm them up by either alternately putting them under my calves or trying to bunch the covers around my feet to get rid of air pockets and have them wrapped within the covers. It doesn't take long before they warm up. The freedom of God's covering is worth any minor discomfort, though.

Been sleeping nude all year round all my life. If I try and keep so much as a t-shirt on in bed, I do not sleep.

Your findings are accurate. It is the belief of many that the body rests more fully when the tempurature is the same all over. It certainly does reduce stress!

It's always chilly in bed when I first get in... but it warms up soon enough. And just pile more blankets on top if it's really cold outside (like I will tonight, since it's currently an icy 27º right now!)...

I sleep nude year round. In the winter we break out the flannel sheets. Sometimes, I'm a bit chilly when I first crawl into bed but body heat soons warms it up under the sheet. I think the body can best regulate its temperature when unrestricted by clothing.

I have been sleeping nude year round for many years and converted my wife when we were married. Even my non nudist 17 year old granddaughter sleeps nude!

When I first started sleeping nude it was only in the warm months too, but I live along the Texas coast and one year we had an extremely warm winter so I continued sleeping nude, now cold or not I can't sleep any other way and I also don't use anymore covers in the winter than I do in the summer.

I've been sleeping nude for at least 15 years now and the few times that I have slept with anything on I noticed the same thing about my feet being cold even if they were under the cover but that never happens when I sleep nude. The only time that I don't sleep nude now is when I'm not at home, like for example I went to visit a cousin in Florida in July and I slept in a pair of loose shorts but that was just in case my cousin's wife happened to come in to wake me up in the morning.

Been sleeping nude since I was a teen. Much more comfortable, I hate the way clothes bunch and twist around my body it is so restrictive and uncomfortable. In winter I put an extra blanket on and use a electric blanket soo warm and toasty. I'ed love to be nude more around the house in winter however I can't afford to heat it that much so I usually wear a thick bathrobe and slippers and remain comfortable. Looking at getting a wood or pellet stove next year to keep the house a little warmer in winter.

My female friend is often cold and keeps the house very hot at night, so I end up sleeping nude because I get hot and she is bundled up.

It could be fun warming her up. Then you could sleep together in your matching outfits.

That 19th century(?) invention, the hot water bottle, is good for warming up the bed in winter. I formerly used an electric blanket but somehow it was never quite right. New underfloor heating, at a quite low thermostat setting, also helps a lot.

Hi Happy Crow, I notice you live in Arizona.....do you have winter there??? ;)

I live way north of you in northern Canada, where it is currently -15C (5F). It has warmed up from about -35 (-31F). It is always somewhat funny to me when someone asks about sleeping nude in the winter. I imagine we have better insulation and heating in this area, as we have harsher temps to deal with, than what you do. Never-the-less, things like blankets and sock are in both our homes.

I still sleep soundly naked in the winter here. I might wear socks on some nights if I have been unable to keep warm during the day. I have recently (finally?) bought some light long johns so that I will be warmer during the day. That helps.

There is no reason to have to resort to PJ's in the winter as long as you have good blankets, or duvets.

I started sleeping nude when I was in college, thirty-some years ago, and have never stopped. Winter temps just make it all the more cozy to snuggle under the covers. My wife is all bundled up in flannel and can't figure out how I survive.

I would imagine that most nudists would also sleep in the nude. I think I read somewhere that about 18% of americans sleep nude and that figure is much higher in Canada, so there goes your winter theory.

Another one - I have been sleeping nude summer and winter for probably 10 years. We have no heating in the bedroom, lounge room, bathroom - after lights out the outside temp gets down to about freezing point during June/July. We use a doona and blankets. I would get too hot if I wore any winter PJs. There is no way I would go back to PJs.

Last summer, I noticed that while working on one of the wild fires in Northeastern California, sleeping in a tent, that I would be too cold when naked in the sleeping bag, but too hot wearing shorts and socks. The temperature was 95 during the day and as low as 45 at night. I bought a hooded sweatshirt they make as a souvenir of the fire, and just wore that. The hood kept my head warm, and acted as an extra pillow, but the rest of me was then able to relax, and I could sleep. My lower half wasn't cold or sweaty, if all I wore was that shirt. Go figure:confused:

Minitim,

An old camping maxim that I've found true: if you are cold, put on a hat. If the temps are below 55 when I crawl in my sleeping bag I make sure I have a warm hat or balaclava or sure enough my feet or the rest of me gets cold during the night. With the hat, I can sleep nude comfortably down into the 20's, YMMV.

At home if it's cool at night I usually pull a pillow over my head but then, I'm bald... :p

I can only sleep nude if I am in bed (I've been known to doze off on the couch clothed, but don't count that as really sleeping). I've slept nude since I was about 14 or so. As a little kid-- starting at about 5-- I started rolling up the sleeves and legs of my PJs because I hated how they felt when they got twisted up. I also tended to sleep on my stomach a lot and had to have the buttons of my top go in a straight line down the centre of my chest (I am fussy about such things-- when wearing tube socks, I have to have the stitching go across my toes and not from the top of my foot to the bottom, or else it's uncomfortable).

By the time I was maybe 10 or so, I was sleeping in my underwear only. Then I gave up on clothes altogether. I sleep so much better now.

And yeah, fleece sheets are wonderful.

I sleep nude all year long. In the winter I have a heavy quilt that I put on the bed and it is quite cozy, in fact I often have to throw it off during the night because I get too hot, especially if we have the heat running. Sleeping naked in the winter shouldn't be a problem unless of course you are sleeping in the yard...

In England duvets seem to have become almost universal but I have a real problem with them, even sleeping nude and whether it is summer or winter. For some reason they seem to interfere with my personal interior thermostat and I overheat unbearably. On the rare occasions I have been forced to sleep under a duvet it has been extremely uncomfortable, a bad night's sleep and in the morning the bedclothes are as wet as if they just came from a washer. When I am in a hotel or B&B, or staying with friends or family I always ask for regular sheets and a blanket or two, depending on season. Then I am fine, and always nude.

Loose a lot of nude time at home when winter arrives but there is no compromising at bedtime. Flannel sheets accommodate my continued practice of sleeping nude.

I agree, homenudist. Flannel sheets, along with an extra blanket or two, make sleeping nude in winter no problem at all.

I have slept nude year around for the past 20 years plus or minus. I finally talked my wife into giving it a try a few years ago & now we both sleep nude but she useally wears socks.
Here is a little knowledge I would like to share about hands & feet being cold. The human body is designed to keep our heart, lungs & brain warm so we can survive. It will pull the blood away from the feet & hands to use it on our upper body. Hope this doesn't seem too silly but as I sit here nude I don't think my feet are not going to thaw out till spring.

Hi pahjo2, I totally get it! It has been very cold here for awhile, and today we have a windchill warning AND a snowfall warning.....life is not always fair. Anyway, I make sure my feet are warm, then I do a lot better. :) Sometimes that means I wear socks to bed. I also have warm boots and socks for outdoor wear!

BTW, the actual temperature here today is -27C....and I have to step outside now.

Sleep nude all year round here. In Winter just put a thicker Duvet on the bed, comfortably warm after a few minutes.
Have also done some winter camping where I have slept nude in a good sleeping bag, just cant seem to be able to sleep properly wearing anything.
