A Swiss region is cracking down on nude hikers from Germany, says the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7860556.stm).

This is ANOTHER incidence of "protecting our children against nudity". Why?

There's NOTHING in the Bible about this, even in the Gnostic Bible, about protecting children against seeing naked adults. It's something that's grown up in the last 4 or 5 centuries of having rapid ways of making clothing. Before that, in warm weather, people would protect their valuable clothes while working by taking them off and putting them aside. People were even baptised naked for 1500 years. Children probably witnessed these events. It was good education for them.

I do not know what to make of that story. I became a nudist while living in Europe. I did not find the Swiss to be any more modest in public than Germans. But again that was 20+ years ago.

Looks like one more country to scratch off the "Where I want to go" list.

I guess the Swiss are only Neutral when it Suits them.

No need to get too worried, this is only one district in Switzerland, compare this to the varying attitudes to nudity from one state to another in the US.

We get the same problems here with councils in one area being naturist friendly and others being quite anti, and lets not forget Queensland in Australia.

Because a lot of parents do not want their children to see adult nudity.

There's NOTHING in the Bible about this,

Most of Europe is nowhere near as religious as the US and couldn't care less what it says in the Bible. A recent poll in my town showed that fewer than 4% of people regularly attend church. The aversion to public nudity is now a cultural, rather than a religiously-based, phenomenon.

I refute that. I do not have a Swiss cousin and I have not sent a letter to the Landesfähnrlich of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Looser Melchior, or his Departementssekretär, Franz Büsser, asking them to clamp down on nude hikers.

Appenzell has always taken pride in being extremely extreme! So don't judge the whole of Switzerland :) -- there are still lots of idyllic hiking possibilities.

Of course you have to take into account that this is the progressive forward thinking town that only introduced votes for women in 1990, so they are obviously a fine example to the world.
