That sounds like a question to ask your doctor.

I would suspect poor diet, lack of exercise, lack of proper rest, and possibly coronary symptoms.
My physician is very cautious to treat anything with drugs and tells me many symptoms can be reversed by modifying one's habits.
I only can say in my case, quitting smoking, walking 3-6 miles four times a week, and being aware of sugar intake has had a positive effect for me by lowering triglycerides and increasing physical endurance. By watching sugars (starches and refined sugar) intake and replacing most of them with more vegetables and proteins, I dropped my triglyceride level from 330 mg/dL to 130 mg/dL within six weeks and used no medication at all.

Kieth is onto something.
When it comes to erections, a penis is just a visible part of the circulatory system. If there are other issues, it can't get erect.
A good circulatory system is a pre-requisite for healthy erections.

You're welcome.
A lot of gents seem to be reluctant to visit and discuss E.D. with their Physician when they first experience difficulties, fearing embarassment or an adverse diagnosis, I guess.
As I understand it, the greater problem is waiting until the condition gets out of control before seeking help.
I hope your friends don't wait until their problems won't or can't be easily managed through simple lifestyle modifications.

Keith

Men have a continual slow decrease in arousal as they age, starting at about 18 or so, and as you age, you just have sex on the mind less too. Compare to when around 15 and the wind blows the wrong way and arousal happens. Womens is much more abrupt though.
But health and physical activity have a huge impact too. If you are sedentary, overweight with poor diet, arousal and erections will be rather rather. Go for a walk 3-4 times a week in the evenings, eat well, and well of course alcohol can be a big killer on blood flow down there too.

When any part of the body stops working in the way that it always properly had, that is a reason to go see the doctor. As Keith said, it could be a circulatory issue that may lead to death if nothing is done. There could also be a chemical imbalance. In either case, the men need to get over their embarrassment and go to the doctor.

Besides what has been stated above, another factor may be how the man sees himself. The first thing to do is to consult a good doctor and get over his embarrassment about discussing E.D. If he's in good shape according to the doctor, then the problem(s) may be psychological. Or, it could be a combination of factors. .age, diet, habits, mental well being, etc.
According to what I've read, all men sooner or later may "fail to function", regardless of age. True, this may occur more often with age but I can tell you for sure, the first time this happens it really hits hard. The next time, that's always in the back of one's mind. .

This is why it is important to practice the fine art of conversation, so one has something else entertaining to do when physiology fails one.

I can understand what other males are going thru. When I was 40yo,10 yrs ago,i was diagnosied with MS and it effected all the nerves in my body,I had to retrain my body to function again. One of the areas of nerve damage was my pubic area(ie penis).I can no longer get an erection. It hit me hard emotionally for a few days but came to accept it.Considering the grand sceme of life,i'm thankful that is all that i lost. When it comes to lovemaking, there are other ways to please my wife, her pleasure comes before mine.I do have a little feeling when she performs oral, but cannot orgasm.Once you get over the fact that sex is not penis controlled, you'll find other pleasurable ways.I wish all other males the best and dont despair.

I haven't had that particular problem, yet. However I have noticed that I have been putting on weight and my cholesterol level has risen above the recomended levels. I am getting back to some mild exercise I think that can make a huge difference. Funny how once you get over a certain age things start to change.

I remember when at 35 wondering how long i would be able to still get it up an going,it seemed at the time that over 40 was unspoken territory that older men werent saying much .AT this time i will tell you that this year i turn 6o.In my fiftys i remember a time when i had a few flat tires,as i call them, all due to a time of high stress. To date i still continue to get nighty erections when sleeping this has not deminished sinse i was 8 years old.I can still have full sex twice a day,but rarely.Once a week keeps me tuned up.I would suggest if you are prone to flat tires that you take charge of your own health, that you study the anatomy,an research the cause an effect of this condition, bone up on it so to speak. It may require you to confront your own fears about your body an your relationship with a doctor. The best of luck to your friends pumpkin pie. Sometimes the anxiety over the possibility of not getting an erection - is actually the cause of not getting an erection.
Sometimes high blood pressure medicine or other medicine can interfere with getting an erection. If you discuss this with your doctor he can possibly prescribe another medication for the same ailment that will not interefere with an erection.
Sometimes depression and worry can interfere with getting an erection. So can ill health.
85 % of womem get orgasms only from clitorus stimulation instead of from the vagina, so a man's stimulation by an erection is not absolutely necessary to stimulate a woman.
Many men get Viagra and other medications to help with getting erections. At age 80 I was prescribed Viagra, and the doctor was simply matter of fact about this problem. Now I take a different medication for high blood pressure which helps also.

I think for getting erection people should take good fresh healthy diet.
Guess you mean a diet rich in the pills which you're trying to promote! There's nothing more obvious in the spamming world than searching out every old penis-related thread you can find and posting your advertising link!

Nobody has mentioned yet the Pubococcygeus (PC) muscle. This muscle helps lift the penis during an erection. If you have an extremely weak PC muscle, then it will not be able to lift your penis very well at all.
If your friends are not having bloodflow issues, and their penes actually can get blood into them (basically "hard") but still not get an erection, this may be the issue.
A way to check this muscle is to learn how to do a "kegel" exercise, it's easy to find on the net, so I won't post it here. If you can do a kegel for about 30 seconds continuously, that's about average. If less, then it probably needs to be exercised.

This could also be due to injury. Riding a bike could cause injury to that area. We all have seen those TV shows where the guy slips and lands hard straddling a fence causing damage to the area.
All of which necessitates a visit to the Doctor. Very few things on the human body can stop working and it's OK. Hair growth is one. For the rest, see a Doctor. It may be an early indicator for something worse. Take care.

Long periods of being seated on a bike saddle can certainly cause erectile dysfunction.
I have a family member who was a very keen cyclist during his youth, and the continual hammering he got from his saddle damaged his nerves and left him entirely unable to engage in any sexual activity for several years. I used to enjoy long-distance cycling - typically 150-200 miles a day - but his experience really put me off that. Now I'll cycle for an hour, or maybe two, in a day, and no more.

i had this problem and im only 27...........i went to my doctor and he said it was my fatty diet and stress from the bad relationship i was in at the time
it wasnt as simple to fix as eating salad and dumping my girlfriend, but over 4 months or so of healthier living (and im not talking TOTAL diet change, just common sence) and a few long talks with my girlfriend i was back to normal
hope this helps

Fortunately it has not been a problem for me. My doctor did bring it up one time because of another medical condition I have which can sometimes cause or contribute to having problems getting an erection but I was able to tell her that fortunately I do not have a problem with that. That was a few years ago But fortunately at almost 35 that is still true.

This persists with many males, most get erections during nights/dreams as a habit, no embarassment to any. But if this happens in a group it neets medical intervention

As some have mentioned, men do sometimes have erections when they wake up. Doctors call it "Early Morning Erections." If a man has one, this validates that everything works. Doctors would then tend to pursue a mental issue or pharmacological (drug) issue rather than a physiological one.
Now conversely, not having one does not imply that the "plumbing" is broken. Men do not have them all of the time.

there is a trick to quietly find out of your plumbing is the issue or if its your head
buy some stamps that are still joined together, enough for 1 strip around your penis. stick it on like a ring before you go asleep...........if you wake up and did not get morning wood it lends to the idea of a plumbing problem, but if you wakt up and the chain is broken then the little fella works so its a mental block
