I was NIFOC when I heard someone knock on our front door. I looked out the peephole and saw that it was the gas meter reader. He's a nice, older guy whom I've let into the house many times.

I opened the door a crack and said: "Oh, hi. Do you mind if I'm nude?" He said: "Doesn't bother me at all". So I let him in and he went about his business.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is NIFOC?

I have done this numerous times. The cable guy is accustomed to seeing me nude. If I have clothes on he will jokingly say, "Going somewhere?" I just provide the courtesy of knowing that it is my preference and if they say they are uncomfortable I say hold on a minute and grab some shorts and let them in. I have a guy here right now. He just left to get his younger brother to help him with the remodel job of my guest bathroom. I told him that I am a student and I am more comfortable nude when I am studying and would it be a problem for him. He said, "Heck no, Man, I am always nekkid at my place." So here I sit buck-naked and he has gone to get his brother and I am not the least concerned about it. I am minding my business and they are doing their thing. If they want me I am right near by and are free to come and go as much as they wish so long as they do not let my Yorkies out of the house. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'd guess it means something like "Nude In Front Of Callers"

Of course I could be wrong!

NIFOC = Nude In Front Of Computer.

Wife came home the other day and saw a Dominion Electric truck here. The reader came up from the back side of the house and acted surprised and said, "Oh, you're clothed." They're used to seeing me here. The lady told how one day she came to read the meter and heard a machine racket in the back. She looked around the corner to the right and behind the house and saw me in my hat and shoes running my shreader. I remember looking up and seeing the truck leaving the driveway. I'm kinda down below such that those coming up the driveway would never see me, but I can see them. Didn't see it come in.

I think that Your house is Your property, and property rights are certain kindred of "saint cow". It means the GRM should ask You the permit to come in Your dominion and obey the rules You use there and never contrary. So I vote for 3~rd.

Gary, I think you handled the GRM just fine. I always grab my shorts when someone, unnanounced come to the door, so I do not shock or offend anyone. Although permission to be naked in your own home is not required in my book. But you protected the service "person" from shock and I think that is the courtious thing to do.

And there is a chat group NIFOC.com and there it stands for Nude In Of Computer.

You did the right thing by first asking him. It was the polite and correct thing to do.

I keep a robe next to my door for delivery people and unexpected visitors. Although I love going to nude beaches and resorts. I'm still in some ways a bit shy. Don't think I would have done the same thing.

10-28-2003, 05:46 AM
You did the right thing by asking him because otherwise he miht have been offended at the sight of your nudity and, as he has no choice but to enter your home (to do his job), he should be able to do so without suffering offence.

Presumably if he had said that he preferred you to be covered up you would have put something on.

I am very glad that you recognise that people have a right not to be offended. The last time I looked at the poll here only 17% of people think differently.

Stu

It's not so much a right not to be offended, but more people choosing to be courteous. The poll merely shows that the majority is being considerate. /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Stu

You are the master at generalizing from a very small sample.

I do NOT believe that people have a right not to be offended. Anyone can be offended by anything. It is impossible for everyone to modify their actions to eliminate everything that might offend any other person.

Gary!
I know a man who are heavely offended if someone offer him strawberries or products consisting of. He have a heavyest allergy against them and feel sick weeks after if even smell it. He looking on the person who do this kind gesture like a personal murder. I know him personally.

So Your sentence is very true that it is allways possible to find a person who feels offended by something thought being even most innocent.

Stu, I can tell you that I also recognize NO such right, because to me, one person's right implies another person's obligation. Example: when I meet a stranger on the street, that stranger has a right to life, therefore it's my obligation not to kill him. But do I have the obligation to avoid every little unknown thing that he might whine about being offensive to him? Hell, NO!

As others have said, being courteous and considerate is one thing, but being obligated is Bullshoot!

This thread reminds of an old Ann Landers column in which a housewife was doing her wash nude and for some reason put on her husband's old football helmet. Just then the meter-reader came in, took one look and said "I sure hope your team wins".

Hey, I remember that! She had loaded the washer in the basement and, on a whim, whipped off her cotton dress and threw it in, too. Just then the meter reader entered, and she grabbed the helment to hide her face when she could find nothing with which to hide her body! LOL!

A similar story was told by a college coed who finished her bath and was walking naked down the hall to her dorm room when she heard, "Man on floor!" and, not having enough hands to cover everything, used them to cover her FACE so she wouldn't be recognized! This was in Reader's Digest.

No No NO!

She put her dress in with the wash. Once it was running she noticed all those cobwebs on the ceiling, so she got her son's hockey stick to knock them down. Not wanting to have loose webs drop into her hair she put on the helmet.

So there she is naked, wearing a helmet, waving a hockey stick in the air, and the meter man walks in ...

Not related to nudity, but am just curious -- I have never in my life (always lived in Missouri) heard of a meter inside a house? They are always on the outside here? Where is there such a thing as an inside meter?

Probably has to do with northern winters etc. But the metering equipment is more rugged now and able to withstand the elements.

It really belongs to a bygone era where people left their homes unlocked, there was usually an adult at home during the day, and people trusted strangers from the utility companies to enter and leave their homes. Hard to believe isn't it.

Here in Toledo some older homes now have telemetering retrofits attached to their old inside water and gas meters so that they can be read remotely (http://www.wordsun.com/rms151.html) .

About 21 years ago, I used to read light and water meters. In those days we had no handheld computers and no electronic sensors on the meters for remote reading. The vast majority of light meters were on the side of the house and easy enough to reach. But there were also many behind a fenced yard and often there was a dog back there. You had to size up the dog to see if he would back down and let you read the meter. Some dogs were too aggressive and you would simply estimate the bill real high until the owner gave in, chained up his dog so you could read the meter.
Citywide I remember that there were only two or three residences with light meters inside the customer's house. Our foreman usually phoned the customer on reading day to reassure the owner that we were who we said we were. One of these indoor meters was in a closet and the customer held a flashlight while I pushed back the hanging shirts. The houses with indoor light meters were among the oldest houses in the city.

The law stated that the light meter was city property and that the city reserved the right to demand access to that meter even though the meter was mounted on private property.

We had one nudist family. One summer afternoon, as I was reading meters, I remember about four kids, all stark naked, running back into the house as I came around the corner toward the light meter. I was not a nudist back then, but I was happy for them that they could play in their yard like that.

Our electric meter is outside.

When I lived in Baltimore we had a meter reader come in to read the water meter in the basement. All the newer homes have them outside but this townhouse was very old.

My house was built in the '20's. My gas meter and my water meter are both in the basement, although they each now have radio transmitter thingies (thingys?) on the outside so the readers don't have to bug me.

To show you how intelligent the gas company is around here, when they installed the radio transmitter thingy they put it behind my fence instead of in front of the house so they still cannot get to it without my leaving the gate unlocked and making sure the dogs aren't out...brilliant!!

Here in California on all the new housing, the gas meters are located outside the fence, so the meter man can go and check anytime they want. The water meters are located by the road, so the meter man can just open cover and take the reading. The electric meters are on the fronts/sides of the houses so the metereader only has to use binoculars to take the readings. Sure, we still have the older houses that have them in the back yard, or behind the fence, but for the most part, everything is readily accessible.

Bob in Kansas City, MO

I live in Belgium and the only time I have ever seen a meter installed outside of a house was on holiday in Spain.
Over here, all meters are installed inside. They only come to read them once every two years, so that is not really a problem.
