There is a Canadian commercial playing now for a chain of department stores. It has a Christmas season song playing accompanying very happy adult actors who are dancing through the store doing back to school shopping, dragging their very unhappy looking children and the couch they seem to be stuck on.

Yep.... My son goes back tomorrow as well, and he's starting a new school so believe it or not, he is excited also. I've seen that commercial here in the states also nudepete, it is a great ad.

It states that public schools cannot start earlier than Labor Day without specific state permission. They have this rule so that the tourist areas such as amusement parks and the like can keep their teenage workers through the Summer tourist season.

That means for this year, school starts at the latest it can start, Sept. 8.

Year-round schools, which are rare in VA, are exempt.

Sounds like you're one of the last to start. Do you also get out early to staff the park too? If so, do you have fewer and shorter breaks too?

Schools go from right after Labor Day until mid June.

With the high school schedule, however, exams make those last four days half-days. Teen full-time summer working possibilities go from mid June through Labor Day.

This upcoming school year (Virginia Beach Schools--I am not going to look up every VA school system) ends on June 18 with exams for middle and high school students starting on June 15. That makes for 183 days of school for the students.

Here in NC the politicians noticed that when the kids went back to school, people stopped going the the beaches. So in their infinite wisdom, they declared that schools would start about 2 weeks later. That would mean that more people would still go to the beaches and the world would be a better place.

To those of us who think, this scheme would work the first summer. The next summer, kids got out of school 2 weeks later. Guess who delayed their summer vacations by 2 weeks???!!! :rolleyes:

Here in Georgia, our school system started on August 6! My wife, who is a teacher, had to report to school on 8/3/09. The only good thing about that is they get out of school at the end of may. I think it is horrible. When I was a kid you went to school the day after Labor day and the school year ended in the first part of June. I don';t understand why the school boards keep changing the calander around so much. Summer vacation should be June, July and August!! I don't have any kids in school to worry about, but with my wife being a teacher it really cuts into the time we have available for vacations.
