Alton Towers Bans Speedos for being 'inappropriate in a family resort'

It is known as the ultimate 80s fashion piece for men and has graced many an embarrassing holiday snap, but it could be the end of an era after a UK holiday resort announced a ban on the humble Speedo.
The Alton Towers Resort has declared a war on the minute swimwear, favoured by stars from Rod Stewart (http://explore.dailymail.co.uk/people/stewart_rod) to Ronaldo, in a bid to maintain Britain's modesty and prevent embarrassment among fellow members of the public.

In fact, the resort is so dedicated to maintaining a family atmosphere and not scaring the kids that it's even considering offering complimentary male waxing to prevent unsightly hair from being on display.

Morwenna Angove, sales and marketing director for the Alton Towers Resort, said: 'Our Waterpark team observed an increase in the number of men wearing tighter trunk style swimwear whilst enjoying the tropical temperatures at the Alton Towers Resort waterpark.

'We feel this small brief style is not appropriate for a family venue so we are advising male bathers to wear more protective swimwear such as shorts.

'We are also looking into offering complimentary male waxing, which will ensure we preserve the dignity of all our guests.'

In place of the controversial Speedo, the resort urges British men to cover up with more socially-acceptable board shorts when heading to the pool.

The decision is somewhat contrary to the stance taken by many European resorts, particularly in France (http://explore.dailymail.co.uk/locations/countries/france), where Speedos are considered more sanitary than their more modern counterparts, the board shorts.

The Speedo style originated from the groundbreaking design made by the Australian company Speedo in the 1930s.

This is not the first time that Speedo has had one of its designs banned. In the 1930s and 40s the two-piece bikini was banned by Australian beach inspectors for being too shocking.

Comment:

It is an outrage! - Women have been harming more eyes in unsightly bikinis than men in speedos. If men are not allowed to wear speedos then women should not be allowed to wear fitting bathing costumes either. So as men will have to wear shorts then women must wear dresses, otherwise it is gender inequality and could be punishable by UK law.

I really thought this was a satire news report, it belongs in The Onion. But no, it is bylined by the Daily News' travel writer - it is not a wire report that got picked up without noticing the satirical content.

Alton Towers resort seems overly concerned about the infliction of unsightly middle aged men on "family vacationers". They are even considering offering free body waxing for hirsute men in order to reduce its visual affliction on others. - See, perfect satire!

Alton Towers should just ban unattractive holiday goers. Wouldn't that serve their purpose more precisely?

Can anyone think of a more appropriate subject for a nude protest?

Alton Towers will be hosting British Naturists for a clothes free weekend (for the fourth year) on 13 – 15 November, 2009.

So, it does seem strange that they've got a problem with seeing guys in Speedos ... :surprised:

It appears as if the U.K is going backwards instead of forward when it comes to how much skin a person can show.

And what is up with everything being geared toward families.

What has happend to the single and couples ( young with out children and empty nesters) ??? Are we now the minority in this world????

D-TX;

A male in a speedo has attention drawn to his buttocks, anal cleft, testes, and penis.

A naked man does not.

It's just another example of the crazy ideas of "political correctness" in the UK. Would you believe that one local council recently decided to close its safe hostel for battered wives, on the grounds that, as men were excluded, it contravened equality laws? If I'd had the choice, I'd have been born somewhere else!

Sounds like you are describing a thong, not a speedo.

Mark;

Nope!

When I was at Ga. State in the 80s, men were required to wear speedos to use the pool.

When the speedo would get wet, from the back, the outline of buttocks and the anal cleft were obvious.

From the front the outline of the penis and the testes was also obvious.

Since the speedo often has bright colors, it draws attention to what is outlined.

A naked male draws attention to nothing.

I am not saying I am in favor of banning the speedo. However, I find a speedo far less modest than being naked.

I tried to buy some board shorts at Abercrombie & Fitch the other day. But nothing about them is short. They go from my waist (low waist as they cut it) but way down to mid calf. who thinks this is a good idea? You are attracting attention to the lower abs, upper butt cheeks and pubic hair, but hiding the legs? needless to say, I left them in the store.

And just to prove how ridiculous the UK has become, check out this story (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2594001/Thrill-rides-cause-a-stink.html) about another British theme park which has decided to ban people from putting their hands in the air on rides!

Thorpe Park is also where a record was set for Nude Roller Coaster Riding (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/southern_counties/3734635.stm).

HA! Those LIARS say it because of the BO - presumably wafting past rear seat passengers at 100 kph. LOL --- sorry, this is Britain, not France, the Brits know the secret of deodorant and there are rumors that they may soon crack the antiperspirant conundrum.

Oh no ... the problem is not BO, it is that riding roller coasters with your hands in the air could very easily lead to FUN! How are they going to maintain their stiff upper lips in the face of that?

Remember: " A prude is someone who lives in the perpetual fear that somebody, somewhere, is having fun!"

Funny Here shorts are banned in public baths. They are not for swimming. We have to use speedos.

I think the same rule applies in France also, speedos & not shorts can only be worn in public pools
