It seems a naked man can be helpful.

Naked man nabs would-be thief

Modesty didn't keep Boulder man from stopping possible car theft

BOULDER, Colo. —
It’s a good thing Justin Chentnik isn’t modest.
If he were, his friend would be out a car, and he’d be out a good story.
Chentnik, a sous chef at a retirement home, says he was completely naked in bed about 4 a.m. Friday when Skip, the mini goldendoodle he was watching for friends, started barking up a storm. His friend and roommate, Laura Nelson, swore someone was in the house, but he told her to go back to bed.
Then she yelled that someone was stealing her car and threw a glass of water in his face to wake him up, Chentnik said.
Chentnik jumped out of bed and saw the reverse lights on Nelson’s 2003 Mitsubishi Montero. Indifferent to his lack of clothing, he ran from his house in the 2800 block of Seventh Street in Boulder, opened the passenger-side door of the moving car and took the keys out of the car. Nelson called police.
The man who had tried to drive away in the car jumped out, Chentnik said, and the two men began struggling in the street. Chentnik grabbed the man by his shirt and pulled him onto the lawn.
“I was naked, and I thought, ‘If I’m going down, I better not do it in the street,’” he said.
The man had a full wine bottle — a Louis Jadot Pinot Noir — and hit Chentnik on the head with it, he said. Chentnik then grabbed the bottle and hit the man in the face.
When police arrived five minutes later, they found Chentnik straddling the man’s chest in his front yard.
“I needed Skip to bring me my underwear,” he said.
Once police sorted out which one of them was the suspect, Chentnik learned Nelson had been right — there had been someone in the house. The man had broken the screen door, unlocked it from the inside and stolen the car keys from their house, Chentnik alleged.
Police arrested Benjamin Smith III, 24, on suspicion of charges including burglary, second-degree assault, second-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, DUI and driving with a revoked license. Smith was on probation from a previous DUI.
According to the police report -- which did not mention that Chentnik was nude -- Smith said he went to Chentnik’s and Nelson’s house because he thought they might want to party. When they didn’t answer, he let himself into the house, hung out and played with the dog. Then he took the car keys to listen to music in the car.
Chentnik said Smith is the son of a couple who lives down the street.

When my dogs bark, I always get up to see what's going on.They are highly intelligent and know when someone or something isn't supposed to be in my yard or around our campsite. Congratulations to the lady for getting up to see what was going on!

Years ago at our other house, someone was in our yard and while I was getting dressed, the wife went to the door with a .22 rifle and took a shot at the prowler---he left in a hurry and we never had problems after that. It was not a good area we lived in, but it was what we could afford as we had bills and low income.

Looks like you can legally be nude outside as long as you are fighting crime!

I like the fact that the police report didn't even mention that the homeowner was nude. That officer had his priorities straight.

Great story!

Yeah really. Years ago I heard a noise outside my house but it was nothing, just the wind. Then I got to thinking 'What If'? I don't have a dog but the neighbors around the corner had two doberman pinschers which barked & snarled anytime you walked past by. So one day I brought my tape recorder with me on my walk and got a good copy to use just-in-case.

My dogs bark at everything that goes down or up the street. If someone entered my house, I would be chasing after them in the nude.

Great story.

However, I don't like the fact that the reporter editorialized, saying "Chentnik isn’t modest." When you are stopping a theft modesty has nothing to do with anything, including nudity.

I guess small town newspapers can get away with such blatant editorial statements in order to add a little humor to the story.

Anyway, 3 cheers for Justin Chentnik for not caring about his lack of clothes. Now the burglar will be part of the penal system ;)

Great idea tape recording it. I prefer my dogs though. Nothing like coming home to unqualified love...even if I've only been out for a few minutes!

Our pets give us love unconditionally, however, a prefer having a cat since she is easier to care for whenever I am away. If I lived on a big ranch then owning a couple of dogs would be ideal so they could have ample room to play.

The dog tape recording seemed good. I once heard of someone who taped her noisy neighbors. Kids screaming, parents yelling, slamming doors, TV blasting late at night. She could never get a good nights sleep so one day she played it back during the day while they were fast asleep.

The man may be the hero in the end, but, let's remember, it was a woman who got him started.

I am sorry that I will not see a reaction to this. But this may be my last post for a while.

Once again, there is no reason for conceal and carry.

It lists her as his friend and roommate, not girlfriend. Sounds like they don't have much of a problem with body shame in that house. His female roommate comes into his room when he's sleeping naked, wakes him up, he jumps out of bed naked and goes to look out a window. I've had female roommate like that were we would change and walk around naked infront of each other.

If someone was outside on my property lurking around or trying to steal my stuff, I wouldn't stop to get dressed before going out to protect my property. You risk the chance of them getting away before you have a chance to stop them. I have had to go outside in the middle of the night to chase off dogs who were bothering the cats or getting into the trash and I didn't stop to get dressed first. The likelyhood of being seen by my neighbors was not high on my list of priorities at that moment, peace and quiet however, was.

Good for him. He saved the car and showed that being nude was not his concern at the moment, doing the right thing was and there was nothing o be ashammed of in being nude. That time of night and in that situation, he had the right to be.:D

Great reporting! Even detail on the weapon -- a bottle of Louis Jadot Pinot Noir -- finally a weapon in America that all France can approve! May I also recommend this be the weapon-of-choice to carry to all Obama speeches and health care townhall meetings? Only please drink it rather than swing it. ;)

I think the adrenaline would be at work more than the modesty. When your adrenaline is pumping, you tend not to care about anything else but what you are focused on.
