Just about every 2 to 3 weeks, my dvd drive doesn't work due to a corrupt driver. This has been happening way to frequently! To correct this problem I have to run a system restore and even this does not always clear the problem.. Sometimes I can't find a GOOD previous date to restore to "HELP" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why restore? Just find the latest version of the driver from the DVD maker and update it.

You might also want to run a good anti-virus and anti-malware program to clean out any bugs residing in your computer. Think about this - What caused the DVD Driver to become corrupt in the first place? Clean out the bugs, then do as suggested above, downlod the latest driver. Clean machine :laundry: + new driver :driving:= VAROOM VAROOM:cheering:.

I would also be concerned about a failing hard drive as a possible cause. A few bad sectors can wreck havoc.

You won't need to use restore points to fix a bad driver. Just delete the DVD drive from the device manager and restart. The driver will automatically be reinstalled.

To get a new driver try Google, search for the model number and drivers. Or try the manufacturer of the computer first.

May not be the driver -- could be the actual drive controller on the main board. Do the virus/malware scan thing and down-load the latest driver. If that turns up nothing and your problem keeps happening I'd begin to suspect the DVD drive or driver controller itself.

The atapi driver built into windows is all you should need.

The best way to test for bad sectors is to run CHKDSK /r from command prompt (start>run>cmd).

I had this issue with my Gigabyte motherboard and Windows XP. Every few burns I would have to uninstall and reinstall the burner. Baring the possibility of spyware on your system (which I can recommend several tools to get rid of that) this isn't impossible to fix. It would seem that the driver for my IDE controller was the cause of the trouble. In some motherboards they use the IDE as a augment for the sata in a raid 5 situation and those drivers that would enable that are very unstable and frequently can lose their ability to send write data to the optical drive. The solution I found that worked was to delete the ide controller driver that came with the motherboard and use the generic one built into windows.
