View Full Version : How do you feel about the Male genitals being referred to as junk?

I am male. I am married and the father of six children.
I am proud of my genitals. I don't consider my penis, testes, and scrotum as junk. They enable my wife and I to enjoy a vigorous sex life and participated in the creation of six wonderful human beings.
However, I keep seeing and hearing male genitals referred to as junk.
Do you think male genitals should be referred to as junk?

It's just a term used cause people are embarrassed to use the proper terms like scrotum and penis.

What is embarrassing about saying scrotum or penis?
One could just use the word genitals. It is more generic but not negative.

Aren't you over-reacting? No one is implying that the male genitals are indeed junk. For some unknown reason, many people don't like to use the proper terms. How often do you hear penis or vagina on TV?

But it's still specific. "Junk" is sufficiently abstract that the real meaning can only be determined by context; the same as when people call it "the plumbing".
Society - at least most of American society - is extremely squeamish about referring to sexual anatomy directly, especially in clinical terms. The more abstracted the word, the less squeamish they get.

I think it's totally irrelevant.
I am the one who used the word "junk" in another thread, where you objected to the term. Now, we have this thread from you. I have to ask, Walter, why the issue?
Language is fluid. The meanings of words change over the years, and you are well aware if it. Let's not pretend to be obtuse.
If the definition of your "genitals" is the biggest problem you have in life, consider yourself truly blessed. I envy you.
Drama, much?

Aren't the first 3 choices the same??
1. I think it is perfectly okay to refer to the male genitals as junk
2. I think it is acceptable to refer to the male genitals as junk
3. It does not matter whether or not the male genitals are referred to as junk
If you think it does not matter if junk is used (#3), doesn't this mean when the term "junk" is used that you accept its use (#2)? And aren't "acceptable" (#2) and "perfectly okay" (#1) the same thing?

Walter: It seems to me that "junk" is a loose synonym for "stuff" in other contexts and has come to be used in this context also. It probably isn't used in the sense that you and I think of "junk" being something useless or worn-out. As Home Nudest says, language is fluid and words get new meanings and outgrow old ones. It's just old fogies, geezers, folks like me who have problems when a word is used in a way that we don't think is right, because it didn't used to be a right use of it.
But, I"m with you Walter, that I will never call my genitals, penis, testes and scrotum "junk." I also will never call my wife, "my old lady." The terms may be used innocently enough, lovingly, even, but just because they also carry the other meaning, it becomes a bit of a put-down, gives a negative feel to the object being referred to.
"Tradition is what you grew up with."

It's just a silly slang term that the youth of this country came up with. I really doesn't bother me that much. It just shows how insecure they are when discussing their genitals. Give it ten years or so and they will have another.

Not the slightest bit of a problem with what they are called; there is no inherent disrespect intended. I must admit that taking my genitalia out for an airing sounds just as bad to me;) ...and the one-eyed trouser snake
There are hundreds of terms that probably originate from a mild amount of shame in using penis and scrotum the medical terms. But why then is the nose called the snout, snitch, sniffer, conk? Surely we are not ashamed of our noses?
Is it you lot who created a term nakathon recently seen for a marathon naked session? Mass skinny dip or bike ride; that type of event.
You lot cannot even get your fannies right. In England the fanny is the female genitals while you lot use it to refer to the bottom. Tights sounds more civilised than panty-hose!

This may sound like a heresy to some of you, but using medical terms to refer to a part(s) of your body sounds much less comfortable than using a nickname.

Can you make this post in UK English or expand its inferences; I cannot follow what THIS IS IT means. My post contained many statements and opinions. Do you agree with every single one or disagree with any? I would also like to expand on my reference to 'you lot' which means 'non-English people' (FYI).

In my family, such anatomical parts are referred to as "gentleman's accessories".
Junk means "rubbish" or "trash"!

Stu - I think an accessory is something that is not part of the whole and is added to it, such as a tie or cuff links are not part of a suit but are accessories. I don't consider my penis and testicles as accessories any more than I do my fingers, toes and nose.

We only use the term as a family euphemism.
Besides, an accessory in fashion is something that is not absolutely necessary, but "finishes off" an overall look. I suppose that's how I see my genitalia. I could manage without it if I absolutely had to - and it forms part of my overall look :clown:

I assume this refers to the kid who wanted his 15 minutes of fame and told the TSA official at the airport not to touch his "junk." My feeling is that its the slang of the day and its a non-issue. Besides, he was referring to his own penis and testicles and has a right to call them junk if that's what he thinks of them.
As an aside, I think its interesting that nudists can spend all day looking at the body parts in question here, but get rather touchy about what they are called. Try referring to a penis as a c*ck on this board and watch the fur fly.

Did not mean to upset, just having some difficulty with language on here. Realised that 'you lot' may have been misunderstood so I clarified it to avoid offence. I also mention uk English so you would know the area I came from. I was just not familiar with 'this is it' as a term. Agreeing with everything I said was most unusual so I could not believe it. That is the clarification I needed. Lets still be friends as I am still studying the nuances of this board:book: (been here many years:freak:).
In UK I like the term 'winkle' for the penis. A small shellfish  that you extract with a pin.
I will try a google for wiener as I have no idea what one is but this is not the thread for alternative names to junk otherwise we may have meltdown.
Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiener A german sausage; I now see the inference!

Question. This thread concludes that there is nothing shameful about referring to the penis by any alternative names.
Can you then explain why we need to censor c o c k ? and similar words. Is the offense of using such a word so evil?
A while ago I posted the word **** sure and **** robin and with the simple cheat of adding spaces I can trick the robotic censor :cowboy: (English but hey I like the hat!)

A lady has just mentioned to me that she has gone out shopping because she wishes to 'accessorise'. Does this mean the normal meaning in the UK of "fashion accessories" or do I now imply that she will be shopping for a 'gentleman accessory' for puposes I have no wish to know? :)

The first time I heard it refered to as "junk" was on The Man Show on Comedy Central. I think it's quite a humorous wording. As opposed to Big Jim and the Twins, My Wife's Best Friend, My Little Buddy, My Third Leg or any number of other things. "Penis, testicals and scrotum" just seem to have such a medical connetation to them that I think people like to have some other naming convention. Don't take it seriously.
Anyone remember this one?

I agree words can make a difference but I think the term is not meant literally. And BTW, when I arrived at the YMCA today for my workout, three 16 year olds were going into the shower area - very nude - & talking about local sports. So, maybe eastern Canada is different and casual locker room nudity is quite common with teens and older men.

Does this mean that women don't have junk in their trunk anymore? Or is it now a really graphic description of something else?
There are of course hundreds of terms, but my favourite that I heard in America was "larydoodle" which, to me, sounded cheerful. Somehow "junk" as opposed to the old "package" seems unnecessarily negative. It's amazing that there isn't a naturist consensus on polite informal names for genitals.

I believe it first started out as an alternate term to "stuff." Males and females could refer to their genitals as their "stuff." Someone probably just wanted to say it a little differently so talked about their "junk" in the same manner as one would affectionately call their "stuff" in the garage as their "junk."
More than that is probably over-thinking it.

I don't have a problem with people using the word "junk". It's not a term I'd really use but I'm not against it. It does surprise me the number of names people have invented for the penis and/or testicles. There seem to be words for all occasions. The same could be said for pubic hair ie bush or lady-garden which I think is quite sweet. There are much more limited terms for the equivalent of a female's junk. I dont think junk sounds right at all and the only other I can think of off the top oft head is vulva, but that's kind of outdated and seems more like a medical term than a casual reference. There certainly are plenty of words for it but not many you could actually use in polite conversation or on this forum for example.

The Online Slang Dictionary has a thesaurus that lists 132 alternate words for vulva, or the female genitalia.
Surprisingly, or perhaps not given the male tendency to come up with a slang word for everything, it lists 178 alternate words for the combined male genitalia. "Penis" alone has 147 words, and "testicles" has 23 alternate words.
In the end, does it really matter what we call it?

I never understood how one word could be nice and another be dirty when we are talking about the same thing. If you were having a conversation about penises what difference does it make what you call it everyone knows what you are talking about, whether it be a polite or dirty conversation. Maybe the people that refer to theirs as junk don't think much of theirs. Anyway if someone ask me about my junk I'll take them out behind the barn and show them the pile I put my junk in......LOL
