Between the summer and winter Olympics, which is your favorite, and which events in particular?

Other than the women’s beach volleyball, diving and swimming, I don't care much for the summer sports. I really like the ski jumping, speed skating, downhill and of course hockey. Curling particularly fascinates me. I could actually see my self doing that. Naked even. On the other hand, a 100m-ski jump would be an excellent way to kill my self!

I find that I prefer sports decided by a clock or a distance/speed rather than something completely subjective like figure skating. I like a clear winner.

What say you?

I prefer winter olympics. There is really nothing in the summer olympics to interest me at all.

Hockey is paramount. Second is figure skating. (yes a man who will watch a bit of figure skating, and I'm not gay either. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/tongue.gif ) I grew up playing hockey, and my mother was a champion figure skater in her time. Missed the 1964 olympics by 1/100th of a point. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sad3.gif So I kinda was around both my entire life.

I'm hoping Michelle Kwan will be able to take gold this year, she may not be Canadian, but she is a great skater.

Michelle Kwan has backed out due to her groin injury.
I like the team sledding. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/applause.gif

because I hate the cold weather, I don't as well like the winter olympics. I absolutely prefer the summer olympics but I don't watch the following sports events: namely, basketball and baseball. In my opinion, this 2 events should not be included in the olympics at all because we've been having them every year, every season, etc. etc. Don't people gets too much of it already, it makes too boring. On the other hand, gymnastics, track and field, swimming, diving are really exciting to watch because we don't have them every year, every season. (And thank goodness, neither baseball and basketball nor football are the most popular sports in the world. It is the World Cup soccer, which is the real football. I don't know why this so called sports they played during Super Bowl are called football.)

Hockey in the Winter Games and Soccer in the Summer Games are what make the Olympics worth the time of day.

http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/beam.gif I like both winter ans summer olympics. The only regret I have is that we put professional athletics in the games and I would much prefer to see our college players participate. It astonishes me, the way we have improved our coverage and technologies. It's truly great.
All the best

It is truly amazing. Have you seen the shots from the moving camera on the ski jumps? It follows them down the ramp and then shows them flying through the air all the way down. Very cool. Also, the moving cameras that follow the speed skaters around the track. I noticed that they have no "helmet cams" or things like that. Must be some IOC rule. It would be very cool to see a "sled cam" or helmet cam on a downhill run. Or how about a "rock cam" for curling?

Ah yes, but the Hockey referees have a helmet cam. I wish other sports had this to see the angle of the play the ref is looking at.

Curling is a fabulous sport.
Not as easy as it looks.
But, a great combination of decision making, good eyesight, and strength to brush the rocks from one end to the other.
Have never seen it done in the nude, but would be an interesting experience!

You are right. Judges scoring is quite subjective. It can be even dishonest as was the case in the Salt Lake City Olympics when the figure skating duo of Sele/Pelletier were placed second after a fantastic performance. Fortunately, this was identified and they were later awarded gold medals.

Thanks SunnyB! Great link.

I thought it would be fun to experience what it must be like to compete in the "skeleton" event. So, I think I'll jump on my Craftsman floor creeper and go down a hill at 80 miles per hour. I'll let you know how it turns out...

As for hockey, there was a great NHL commercial a few years back that had a player on the ice say "How smart are NFL players?", then they showed a guy getting checked hard against the glass, then THROUGH the glass! They cut back to the player who says "Smart enough not to play Hockey". Classic.

Enough chat. Back to Virtual Curling!

I like sports with a finish line or goal the best.
Style points are ok, but the winner should be the one that gets there fastest or goes the farthest.

Or how about when someone who just has to cross a finish line to win a gold medal does something "stylish", falls and blows it. Like a certain female snowboarder did yesterday. DOH. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/shout.gif

Saw the last end. (an extra end).
Great last shot by the Swedish skip. Had to be perfect or would have lost.
Great match by the Swedish and Swiss teams.

Hey, the Canadian men just won the gold medal in curling.
Got a 6 on the 6th end.
(could have had 7, but missed an easy draw-did not want to rub it in too much with the opposition?)
But, a 6 at this level is extremely amazing!!!!

I'm very sorry about the Canadian win and so clear in 6th end. I confess that my countrymen made a major mistake. It was like the end of the world.

In ice hockey USA and Canada have been big disappointments. The gold play on sunday between Finland and Sweden is extremely interesting

Hello, Sauna:
Markku and his curling team had a great Olympics, probably the most consistent team for the whole 2 weeks.
They placed ahead of the Sweden and Norway rinks that were highly favoured (but, did not make the medal round).

THe Finnish hockey team (led apparently by Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu) have also played very well. Will be cheering for them to tomorrow against Sweden.

Hello Nu

Finland has won all the plays and goals are 27-5 which looks very good but tomorrow we see the last and worst one.

Thanks for cheering. We really need all the power avalaible.

Well this lackluster exibition called the Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy are over.

They were a disappointment overall.
Full of surprises but not any of the joyous kind.
Mediocre athletic performances and questionalbe officating marred this Olympics.

The bright spot of the entire Games is the fact they are over.

The highlight for me was the short track speed skating, the Koreans were awesome!! their performance during the men & women heats was truly outstanding. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/applause.gif

Last night i watched the relay final the Koreans just beating the Canadians, with the Americans just holding the Italians for Bronze, Brilliant!!

I sense maybe a little dissapointment from the Americans posting here, possibly you feel your team should have done better.

Summer sees the WORLD CUP bring it on!!
soccer for those not familiar with the term.

The Olympics were wonderful from a Canadian perspective. We have some wonderful athletes right now, especiall the women. Of the 24 medals won, 16 were won by women or women's teams.

I saw that short track race too. It was awesome. Two races in one! And the cool thing was, that everyone was happy with where they ended up!

I understand that the game between Finland and Sweden was a well played, awesome game. Congratulations to both teams.
