Not to start something too controversial, but based on mexico and mexicans recent insulting behavior, I would hope many Americans do nothing special for it. Afterall, its not OUR holiday. just my 2 cents.

I will not be observing any holiday on May 5th. I will be going to Mexico on July 4th and expecting a lot of parades and fireworks.

Hello all:
Actually Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more by us Americans than by Mexicans(the Battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862, was Mexican peasants against the French), just like St. Patricks Day is celebrated more by Americans than the Irish. The Irish look at us quizzically when we celebrate St. Paddy's... Looks like a great weekend here in the N.E. U.S.

Fifth of May? Yeah that's the day the Mexican restaurants give you extra helpings of beans at no charge.

Yeah, I know the story about the French getting kicked out of Mexico! I don't blame the Mexicans for being annoyed about the French dictator.

I just wish they were equally annoyed about Mexican dictators ruling over them.

No big plans for Cinco de Mayo, but I would like to check out Glen Eden sometime.
As for the weather, looks like cold and overcast skys. I will be going up to Deep Creek hot springs friday anyway. The weather up there is good most of the time!

I do parading pretty well; it's the prancing I have trouble with. The back and forth portion of it gets me a bit dizzy.

Cinco De Mayo isn't Mexico's independance day if thats what you're thinking. Its actually sometime in September. I think the 16th.

But as for me, I'll be doing the same thing every friday, going to a bar/club to celebrate guys night out!

And since the nopantsday folks didn't call for any prancing, I'm gonna bet that you participated all day. 24 hours with "no pants on." Am I correct? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif

As for me, nope, there's no Cinco de Mayo activities around here that I know of. So I spent the afternoon shooting 8-ball with a couple of formidable competitors, and had the good fortune to "break and run" a couple times, allowing no opponent a chance to shoot. Kinda rare, twice in one day. And, darn, I had to keep my pants on, too. But I sure shot the pants off my opponents a couple times! HAH!

Cheers, everybody, the weekend's here! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Sacramento Jesse.
I'm a little Confused. Just yesterday a Mexican friend of mine told me that May 5th compared to July 4th for americans.

I just want to know which it is, so I can be correct if someone should ask me.

I wonder if Norway has a special date to celebrate.

May 17th is Constitution Day in Norway which seems to be the equivalent to our 4th of July.

As far as I can tell, there is nothing like that in England, although they do have plenty of other Holidays to celebrate.

Yes, Moboy, I spent the day pantsless on the 5th and, for good measure, shirtless, also, even though I do that every day as well.

Sacramento Jesse is correct. Independence Day in Mexico is celebrated on September 16th. Some, even I, are sometimes confused about Cinco de Mayo being the Independence Day. It is not.

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's Mayonnaise was manufactured in England.

In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.

But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York.

The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss.

Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as

Sinko de Mayo.

WHAT!!! You expected something educational from me?!?
