My husband and I are 'as naturale as possible'...
To me NATURAL is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!

Personally I am a very plain-jane type and don't have x-tra time for too much complication/vanity! lol

I don't, and never have, shaved, trimmed, depilated or indulged in any form of pubic topiary.

Legs, yes. Armpits, yes. Pubic region, no.

You can buy bikinis now that consist of a top and little 'shorts', which mean that there's no need for creating a 'bikini line'. At a textile venue (beach or public pool) this would be my preferred costume. At a naturist venue, I'm currently in a minority, as most women appear to undergo some form of trim, at the very least.

However, what became fashionable about fifteen years ago (just when I became a naturist) is, I feel, slowly -very slowly- starting to slip out of fashion, and I suspect that in another five years time 'hairy' will be back in fashion.

I've no real 'evidence' to support this: I just feel that there are constant fashion swings, and depilation will fall from fashion, as will piercings and tattoos.

While it's easy to stop shaving and keep up with fashion, or remove piercings, it'll be harder for those people who have indulged in tattoos to appear fashionable. I suspect there'll be a rush to have tattoos surgically removed in ten years time.

'Great minds think alike', or was that 'Fools seldom differ' anyway I have to agree 110% with all the above, every fashion leaves behind its victims, even when fashions move on there will always be those who adopt a fashion and stick with it, but on the whole things do come around such that even the fashion victims are in vogue briefly once again, I just wish I'd kept my flairs!!

Hi all. This is my first post at cff. I'm smooth all over too. I like the feeling. I get sugaring treatments - like waxing but more gentle - and I shave in between sessions as needed. I first started about six years ago - got my chest and back, plus the edges of my pubic hair. Since then I've kept going. At this point, I can't imagine going back. If I could afford to, I would get laser all over to make it permanent.

Unshaved is too wild and less hygienic.

I think this thread is interesting because most people who shave and wax do so for the feeling and sensation while most of the people who don't, seem to think it's all about appearing a certain way to others.

Unshaved is too wild and less hygienic.

I doubt that, unless you are adverse to occasional bathing.

Pubic hair will hold onto some bodily oils and aromas - that is part of its intended function, but that is not equivalent to 'unhygienic'. Indeed the rashes, razor bumps and other common infections that result from shaving may well be far more a hygiene problem.

Pubic hair that is exposed to sun, air and water will not become fetid and gross as it does when trapped in tight clothing for days on end. So perhaps being shaved smooth is only a hygienic plus for textiles.

Hi, Mark, I said only LESS hygienic, not UNhygienic,
but of cause it depends... and it only IMHO. ;)

This has often been quoted as the function of pubic hair alongside its decorative function. Pheromones (sex hormones) are secreted and reside in said hair. What I often think is how often does one go around sniffing the pubic region of a lady to experience this :-) I can understand armpit hair.

I can barely tolerate shaving my face and getting the occasional haircut. Hell no, I don't shave or trim my body hair.

And does anyone else find it odd that so many people on this board devote so much energy to modifying their appearance when they're so quick to criticize "textiles" for hiding behind clothing?

jimb95818 says: "And does anyone else find it odd that so many people on this board devote so much energy to modifying their appearance when they're so quick to criticize "textiles" for hiding behind clothing?"

Well, I think it's a matter of personal choice. We shouldn't criticize other nudists for their grooming choices, whether they shave or not :)

I thought about being shaved for a long time before I finally got everything removed. I'm really glad I did - and wish I'd done it sooner. I can't imagine going back. In fact, if my budget ever allows it, I'll explore permanent methods like laser. ;)

I don't buy the "shaving is more hygienic" argument either. After recently hacking my leg open in a mountain biking accident, the doctor stitching me up made no mention that my leg hair could potentially cause problems with the very deep cut. If hair is fine around broken skin, I can't see how it could be "less hygienic" on healthy skin.

That said, I am a frequent shaver because I like the look and feel.

I like to myself shaved on occasions depending on my mood. I usually keep it short & well trimmed but sometimes the hassle of doing the perfect trim is just too tiring...so its when these times arise I feel that its easier to shave it off completely.

I think the bottom line is it's a matter persoanl of choice. I have gone both ways, I like the look and feel of everything shaved I just don't have the time and energy to keep it that way all the time. So, I tend to go back and forth.

I don't think there is a hygine or health issue either way. If your careful with the shaving you should have no problems with cuts or ingrown hairs but I know sometimes it happens.

Some day I'll have the time to keep it shaved, by then may it will all fall out anyway.

Just my thoughts,
Michael

I prefer to be totally smooth. But I also appreciate variety!

I was chatting with a friend. She's been shaved for 15 years. I convinced her she should grow back her pubic hair, just for a retro experience. So she's stopped shaving as of this week, and is going to go for a full, untrimmed bush. Cool, don't you think? She can always start shaving again when she wants, of course!

I don't think so. I don't criticize textiles for hiding behind clothing. I criticize them for not letting me be comfortable myself. Far as I'm concerned they can wear a burka if they want to but if I want to go further down the beach and get naked or get naked in the back yard, where's the problem? Clothed or naked people all put effort into modifying their appearances. We shave, we do things with our hair, some wear jewelry, I have a tattoo and want to get more.

I've been shaving daily since July 13, 1980. There had been occasions before that such as frat hazing, dares, etc but shaving is a part of myself now for many years. I like the look and the feeling of being smooth as do my friends, familiy and partners.

The guys at the gym are used to seeing me shave in the shower or at the sink every morning and over time some of them have started shaving themselves. I had started sooner but while appearing nude in a play, the director insisted that I stop and let my pubes grow. He said it didn't fit the part I was playing and when faced with the choice of working or not I let my pubes grow. I shaved in the dressing room after the final curtain on that July 13th.

Normally I "tidy up" downstairs without shaving completely, but on a recent holiday I shaved off the hair on my stomach area in order to let it tan properly. Strangely though I left the hair on my chest. I can't really think why, but it seemed a good idea at the time (and my tummy was a nice even brown!)

I was shaving my shaft and scrotum for a long while but quit and let it go natural again. It wasn't really much trouble to maintain it but now that it has grown out again, I'm not sure I want to bother. It was for my own vanity anyway as no one really noticed or cared whether I shaved so I guess I'm going to stay natural.

My wife & I did that for awhile, but going every 3-4 weeks started to get costly. So now we are getting zapped. (lasred) Its more upfront money, but looking long term it really is better. Both of us have left some hair up top, but its easy to shave that off if we want to.

If waxing is something you are going to do long term, you might want to look at getting lasered at a respectible place.

Last year I kept the pubes cut close and trimmed into a few different shapes. This summer I let it all grow wild. Never a trim all summer, not sure why. A few weeks ago, I finally trimmed up and sized down a lot. Now I'm back down to hairfree scrotum and a small Hexagon shape raised above my penis. I like the short shapes far better than the bush, especially wearing the speedo as much as I have to around family.:(

The first episode of the new season of Always Sunny in Philadelphia had a reference to lasering the groin area... In discussing giving someone a "Gorilla Mask" (sticking pubic hair to someone's face), Dennis asks Mac where they were going to get enough hair as they weren't going to get any from him. When questioned why, he then admits he was "smooth as a turtle." It was a funny scene. Funnier yet in a later scene when they wake up to find that they had pulled their respective pranks on each other (Mac gave Dennis a Gorilla Mask). Love that show!

I usually keep my shaft and scrotum shaved and trim my pubic hair real close. I started trimming my pubic hair because it was so coarse and it was sticking through my bike shorts and was quite embarrasing! I like the short look because it looks more natural on me since I am so hairy, I shaved it completly smooth a few months back and it looked "strange", kind of like one of those strip mining hillsides you see in West VA. I like the short look and I think I will keep it that way.

Have been shaving chin to toe for years. Even spent two summers shaving top of head to toe. I enjoy the feel of being a nudest nudist. I do not even get a second look in the locker room when changing clothes @ the gym. Used to be shy about it then I decided it was my business and the only person from whom a complaint would be listened to was my wife and she had no complaints. Fortunately, I can get away with 3 or 4 times a week to keep that smooth look.

When I bought a Norelco electric shaver for my face, I soon found out it is great for my chest and abdomen. Use it every day and it keeps it under control. After trimming the pubes, the Norelco is good for keeping the bush line as low as you like.

Keeping a very short buzz each week rather than shaving my head and trimming the pits once a week seems to round out the shaving.

Still tweez the shaft and scro rather than shaving. Although it is a bit of a job, great when done!

I shave my armpits, face, scrotum and head, I trim my pubes. However I like my hairy chest, so that says put - although I have shaved it once or twice in the past it was too uncomfortable as the hairs grew back so I probably wouldn't do it again although I do occasionally trim it back in the summer as I have a very fuzzy chest.:D

Except for a short time when I lived in Seattle, I have been shaved from neck to upper thighs for about 10 years now. My body hair has the appearance of a wet dog and I find the smooth look a little more flattering.

I prefer the shave cream and razor, but I do have a Bodygroom for more difficult to reach places.

Well? Who shaves, or rather removes their pubes otherwise? I know quite a few nudists do, but it seems I'm one of the few teens who do.

Mike

Due to a recent outpatient minor surgical procedure I was shaved from the waist down to my mid thighs. Because I am fairly hairy all over, I couldn't wait for the thigh hairs to grow back, in order to match the rest of my body.

To begin with, it would require way too much time and effort to keep everything totally smooth. But I have always felt that a moderate amount of body hair on a man is generally more natural and attractive than being totally "smooth". On the other hand, after some experimentation, I now prefer keeping my penis, scrotum and pubic hair much more closely trimmed than I used to.

In the past I'd tried shaving a little - just around the base of my shaft, and my balls too - but last night I decided to go all the way and shaved myself totally smooth! It isn't itching, yet, and looks a bit weird but it does feel kind of nice. I'm fairly hairy all over so it's a bit strange to have a bald patch - but I'm already a man with long hair so I'm strange enough anyway. I'll see how I like it as to keeping it maintained.

I too enjoy that feeling, especially when I get in the water (it kind of tingles the skin). Having seen pictures of myself both with and without body hair I think a smooth body and an overall tan can't be beat... I feel like a million bucks when people are able to see me at my best.

Another cyclist here. I had shaved my pubic hair several times and let it grow back before I got into cycling. But after too many rides with uncomfortable tugs on hairs, I started trimming my pubic hair and shaving near my legs. Then decide it was just easier to shave all of it. After a year or two of only shaving during the summer, I started shaving year round.

I tried shaving all my body hair before...never again! I am a very hairy guy and it was not a good idea. The feeling of smoothness only lasted about 24 hours. Then the itching began!

So fast forward...these days I do shave my scrotum and trim pubic and chest areas. Mostly for comfort. As I aged I developed a very hairy back. This did not please me. Thanks to a friend, I now have the hair removed semi-regularly by using hair remover cream. From neck to buns its smooth and I must say I do enjoy the comfort (and for the vain side of me...the look of it). I think, like others who are hairy have said, its about balance and what feels/looks right for you. I will say, it can be a chore to keep up with it all. Just as bad as keeping the gardening done :)

I agree - the "hairy smoothy" is very silly looking.

Why humans alone have pubic hair (http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2009/02/why-humans-alone-have-pubic-ha.html)

Andy Coghlan, reporter

Robin Weiss (http://windeyer.ucl.ac.uk/inf/robin.html), a virologist at University College London, had an intimate revelation in the shower recently.

Public hair, he decided, developed as a sexual ornament. It became bushy and prominent after our ancestors split from non-human primates, he says, when we lost most of our other body hair. As it disappeared, human pubic hair acquired a new role as a prominent sexual ornament, a visual signal of sexual maturity and possibly a reservoir for sexual pheromones.

The bushier and coarser it became, according to Weiss's theory, the more attractive you were.
His theory, published in the Journal of Biology (DOI: 10.1186/jbiol114) is not backed by new scientific data but is essentially a new interpretation of results published in 2007, on how the "crab" lice that infect pubic hair in humans are related to those that now live on the fur of gorillas (http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn11330-pubic-lice-leapt-from-gorillas-to-early-humans.html).

Our ancestors and those of gorillas went their separate evolutionary ways at least 7 million years ago. But the lice that infect gorillas and modern humans didn't become different species until much later - around 3.3 million years ago, as revealed through research in 2007 by David Reed (http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/mammals/Welcome.html)of the University of Florida Natural History Museum in Gainesville.

So why didn't the lice become different species 7 million years ago, when we and gorillas followed separate evolutionary paths?

Reed's investigations of lice DNA led him to conclude that the ancestors of lice which now live on gorillas (Pthirus gorillae) originally died out in our own ancestors. But the gorilla lice crossed back into the human lineage about 3.3 million years ago, then evolved into today's pubic lice (Pthirus pubis).

Reed argued that the lice returned to us through physical contact, perhaps when human ancestors slept in vacated gorilla nests or came into contact with the gorilla lice while handling gorilla meat.

Weiss agrees, but thinks we re-acquired the pubic lice because our pubic region had been evolving, starting off as smooth vestigial fur but eventually becoming coarse and bushy enough for the gorilla lice to grip on to. Essentially, the coarser hair gave the gorilla lice a reason to return to the human lineage. Weiss thinks this happened after we lost most of our other body hair, and that the bushiness and coarseness evolved as an advertisement of sexual maturity in our otherwise naked forbears.

To back up his case Weiss visited zoos to peer at the groins of our closest relatives. He noticed that in other great apes, hair in the pubic region was if anything much finer and shorter than elsewhere on the body - the opposite of the human situation. It supported his argument that human pubic hair is different and probably unique, both in its evolution and in its physical appearance and purpose.

Weiss admits that the theory is pure speculation. However, the good news, he says, is that the days of crabs may themselves be numbered because of an increasing fashion for shaving off pubic hair.

"Thus there may be a health benefit to this emerging sexual lifestyle," he writes.

I have been shaving since I was a teen, and I had stopped only was shaving under my arms, I don't shave legs or arms but I do trim the hairs on my arms and legs, then after I had my first child been shaving ever since.

I have shaved all my hair for the last 3 months. Just came back from Orient Beach with my wife and noticed that the majority of men were completely shaved in their pubic area also.

My wife says that I actually look better and was surprised by the number of men shaving also.

Hi,Im Frankie in Az,I used to shave in my past years, but Now I dont to me I prefer too have pubic hair on me.I dont know the obssesion most people have with shaving. The itching was too much for me and I prefer a wax job over the razor.
But to me I love the natural hair on a body.

I've seen a few 'hairy smoothies' who only shave their pubic areas - I am almost always successful in suppressing laughter.

I have a good bit of body hair, though not extreme. I shave my genitalia for sexual reasons, but I only trim the length of the pubic hair on the lower belly above my penis, not shave it. I find it disconcerting that someone would find it funny that I shave only my genitals.

Now, if I had a BIG shaved area around my midriff, and nowhere else, I could understand that looking weird. When I first started shaving, I shaved all the pubic hair above the penis. Not only did I think it looked weird, it got a terrible lot of bumps.

This is a little hard to talk about, as I don't know accurate vocabulary to distinguish pubic hair on the genitals, and the pubic hair on the lower belly above the genitals.

BTW, my experiences with shaving have nothing to do with social (public) nudism. I love be naked, but have done so with my wife only at this point. Strictly home nudism for me.

I have been shaving since my college days. Lucky for me I am not hairy so maintaining a smooth look is not a hastle. To me I just feel totally nude when shaved completely. I like seeing others smooth as well. However, I have never understood when a man shaves only his pubic area and not his chest and stomach.

Geez, how do you stand it? you're probably not very hairy, otherwise you just wouldn't put up with the massive sweating and itching the hairs cause.

And a lot of hair makes it harder to wash your body, to avoid getting stinky, to feel comfortable, etc. At least for me...

I'm sorry to say it that way, but congrats for being able to get along with a hair forest in yourself

Well I have recently become a "smoothie!" My Wife & I are getting together soon, with another couple (who are naturists) and we are going to celebrate Spring with a Body Painting party!
On the Body Paint instructions, they recommend removing body hair for the best results, so our friends & I have decided to take it all off.
My Wife, has decided not to, as she doesn't have too much pubic hair.

I still haven't got used to how I look though!

I have been shaving now for 12-15 years. I used to cycle a lot and started shaving my legs. Being a hairy person, I thought it looked a bit funny to have smooth legs and a rather prominent pubic patch. So I shaved that and liked it enough that I have done it every since. I also shave my arm pits and back and I closely trim my chest and arms. I just love the look and feel of no or little body hair!

I've never had that much hair to start with. And what pubic/axillary hair I had was reddish blond so it was barely visible. But this year I decided to give it a try. I trimmed the area above the penis and shaved smooth my penis and scrotum. It took a few days but I enjoy not having the hair. I have been shaving/trimming my underarms for years so I guess going further south was a natural progression.

And anyway, if I decide I no longer like it I can just let it grow back over time.

I remove all body hair. I am not a hairy person to begin with and the hair on my legs was so small and fine it was almost imperceptable. What there was of it is gone now and I maintain the look from chin to toes. I like the look and feel; it enhances the feeling of being nude - cannot explain but it does feel good. Have been doing this for years and no one has ever questioned or made a comment; I have been in a lot of locker rooms.

hommenudist,

I'd be surprised if someone said anything to you about shaving everything. I haven't been here for a couple years and am now back. No place I've been have I been able to be nude. So, I started back to my shaving and posted an ad on crgslst and a guy used my clippers to remove it all. Oh, by the way, I posted it on the mwm because I didn't know where else to post it, as I don't think a woman would be comfortable with shaving a guy. I don't know. Any suggestions anyone?

I only started going completely hair free last year, but now I'm really happy with the results. It feels so natural. It seems to be quite the trend too, because I'd say 75% of the people at the local beaches are shaved/waxed too.

I've always just shaved as opposed to waxing, but I'm wondering now what the advantages are for getting a Brazilian wax. The main disadvantage is the cost versus shaving.

While I don't shave my pubic hair (except to trim, of course), I do shave my scrotum. I started doing that some years ago when a group of us decided to do it as a "commitment" of sorts. We've all moved on to other interests, but I still maintain smooth testicles. Feels especially good in the summer time.

Why is it necessary to have three current threads running on removing pubic hair? It seems to me that some must find it necessary to keep justifying their choice. You never see threads devoted entirely to having pubic hair, ginger hair, curly hair, beards etc.! Also I find it irritating that some even feel the need to regularly draw our attention to the state of their genital area in their choice of user name! No doubt I will bring down on me the wrath of all the shavists!

You don’t normally know the content of a post until you have read it! Maybe no part of the human body is off limits, but some information is not necessarily welcome. I sure you do not wish to learn of somebody’s gastric problem or graphic descriptions of their “romantic” encounters. Whilst “pants off” post was not gross and my comment was semi-light hearted, I would rather not be left with the picture of grown men shaving each other’s bottoms!

I may have posted here before but in case I did not. I admit to shaving body hair 3 to 4 times a week. Pubic hair, under arm, legs, all shaved completely clean. Not much if any to do for the legs they are pretty close to hairless anyway. I am clean shaven from the chin down. Been that way for years, at least 12 to 15 years now. I say, "preserve the bush!" I shaved once for a boyfriend and didn't like the after effects so didn't do it again. Funny, the other day at the beach I had a gentleman come up to me and thank me for not shaving it. But I have to say, I do feel like a minority in not shaving. The women I see at the beach who don't are usually women in their mid-50s or older (I'm mid-40s).

I sometimes wonder if I missed that chapter in the "becoming a nudist" manual.

I personally like to shave before participating in any nude activities. I primarily shave because it feels better, but I also think that it is a common courtesy to my fellow nudist. Especially when it comes time to hop in the pool. However, I must say that I am not bothered by others that don't shave.

Ummmm ...

It's not a courtesy.

You shouldn't think and shouldn't let anyone else think they need to shave to fit in or to make other nudists "comfortable". The ONLY reason to do it is because you prefer it.

Period.

Hi Mikie, I see that this was your first post. Welcome.

I don't know how long you've been involved in social nudism, but just relax and don't worry about following fads or customs. We are customs breakers just by being nudists. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with being a smoothy, but it is not mandatory or necessary to get along.

There are some customs nudists are more particular about - like sitting on towels.

I keep my pubic hair well trimmed or go bare. I like to leave a small patch of hair above the penis, but keep the scrotum and other areas bare. I just prefer the smooth feeling. I've been doing this now for ten years, but really kept it up for the last five years. Once I started shaving on a regular basis, my wife has also shaved more of her pubic hair. She keeps most of her pubic hair shaved, but leaves a small patch on top and some hair on the labia. She just doesn't like the shaving on the labia area. She once went totally bare which was a nice surprise for me. I asked her why and she didn't like the gray hairs showing up so while she was shaving, she took them all off. So every once in a while, she goes totally bare for a change.

Who shaves? C'mon. The question today (in 2009) is, "Who doesn't?" And what's the big deal? I shave "down there" every morning when I shave my face. Wife usually does it once a week or more if we're having a nude backyard party or party dinner party.

Way back when we first became nudists, this was a real "hot" topic. It isn't anymore.

Come to think of it, some guys even shave their heads today! Imagine that!

I would be one. I like the bush as does my partner. Plus, that kind of attention with a sharp blade in places I don't want cuts is way to high maintenance for me to even contemplate. :(

Yes, I do feel in the minority on the beach. But I've never been a template of current fashion. People used to say I dressed "weird" even when I wore clothes more than I do these days.

Just me.:)

I would be another. I hate to shave my face every day. Cannot imagine having to shave even more all of the time. I did try it twice and both times I disliked the *****liness when it started to grow back. Yes I know that would not be a problem if I shaved all of the time, but I hate shaving.

And shaving did nothing for me. I was not cooler (in stature or in temperature) or felt better. So I did not continue. Let me keep my fluffy hair as puberty meant it to be!

Good choice. My guy has nice fur on his face, too. Then again... male face stubble has always torn my face up. I am a supporter of natural on all! I don't have a choice:)

You can count me as another non-shaver. I was shaved underneth for my vasectomy some years ago. That was an interesting sensation, plus it itched like crazy when it started to grow back. So a minute in the shower kept it smooth for for quite a while. That is until I nicked myself. Now there's a whole other sensation I wasn't ready for!! By the time that healed the itch was gone, so no more shaving there.
I do however like to keep things trimmed. "Just a little off the top and sides, please." As in golf, I'd rather play the fairway than the rough, but that is just my personal preference.
I do find it interesting to see the many varied looks people get through trimming and shaving. Some people are very artistic and talented in their designs.
Shaved, trimmed, or natural..........to each their own. Just another form of self expression and that is what keeps us all unique individuals. How boring life would be if we were all the same.

You can have whatever kind of day you choose......so choose wisely!!!

Another vote for leaving it alone. I tried it a couple of times, and found it extremely erotic, but the irritation wasn't worth it. Frequent razorburn was a turnoff, and the *****liness of growing back was unpleasant.

Interesting comment. I hate to shave; however, I shave both my head and my scrotum (trim the rest). I started with shaving my head when my late wife lost her hair while undergoing chemo for breast cancer. Each different protocal of chemo makes you go bald ALL OVER. I never shaved everything but I really like the feel of a shaved scrotum and will continue shaving both. Ironically, I have a full white beard that I keep trimmed short.

I can say that, at least in the midwest, a majority of female nudists shave and a substantial number, though less than half, of male nudists shave. Don't know about the rest of the nation but it still seems a remarkable change in paradigm in a fairly short time. Wonder what the textiles are doing?

I find it generally more comfortable when clothed since hairs get caught in uncomfortable places.
