Nude statues ruffle no Northampton feathers (http://blog.masslive.com/breakingnews/2007/09/nude_statues_ruffle_no_northam.html)
This is the first time I've heard about nudity in art not causing a problem. Its nice to see that some people understand that nudity doesn't always equal bad. Things like this help restore my faith in humanity.

Simonsebs;
I live in Savannah, Ga. This is supposed to be the Bible belt. The Telfair Academy has had nude statues for years. No one says anything.
There is an antiques shop at Abercorn and 37th Street that has a reproduction of Michelangelo's David outside. It is of course nude and no one says anything. (All though it is getting pretty moldy and dirty and should be washed.)
Most people are not bothered by nude art. That is why you usually hear nothing.

Savannah may be in the Bible Belt geographically but it definitely isn't in it culturally. Especially with Savannah College of Art & Design in town.

I grew up in MA and visited the Northampton area often when I was in HS as my best friend attended a boarding school in the area.
Northampton and western MA is quite liberal area. Residents have a live and let live policy about everything. Remember, the area is filled with colleges, especially women's colleges, boarding schools. Needless to say, a lot of educated people reside in the area.

St. Louis has had nude statues downtown since 1940. See;

oldbob;
SCAD opened in 1978. The Telfair Academy opened in 1886. I remember going to the Telfair Academy on a field trip in what must have been 1971 and the nude statues were there.
You are correct though that Savannah is different from the rest of the Bible belt.
However, I believe that nude art is common and most don't object.

City Allows Nude Artwork On Window In Downtown Orlando (http://www.wftv.com/news/14263381/detail.html)
This is similiar to my original topic so I posted it here. Slowly America is starting to wake up and understand.

There was a huge controversy when a large nude drawing was hung in the window of an art studion in Escondido, CA. At least showing this drawing did get people talking and thinking about where they might stand in terms of nude art.

nudity in art has been around for years. people should remember that when viewing sculpters and not think of it as offensive structure.

I would like, no, love to have some naked art. Art that hangs on the wall and statues that go outside(front and back). Art including a mother breast feeding her child, posing men and women, a few sexual scenes for inside or out the back, etc.
