View Full Version : Are Naturists Nerds?

Are some or most of us those who who be classified as nerds?

I was born in the early 50's. My parents were older than average and, while not naturists, never though anything about being naked in front of each other or my sisters and I... in other words, a walk to the bathroom without clothes was hardly a
problem.

When I was young, I went to the Y and thought nothing of swimming nude in front of others. I went to highschool at the University of Illinois (a school that you tested to enter and my sister cried when I decided to attend because it was the nerd school). We had access to the university pools, which meant that no suits were required in the men's pool, and no one thought anything of it.

During college, I went to school in Arizona, where all of the pools were outside, so no one though anything about nude swimming, but outside of regular classes, steaking a graduate pool was common. I wasn't until grad school that I discovered that some universities were dropping nude swimming in non-coed pools.

After graduation, it is fair to say that I was still a nerd. I wasn't the popular "hot guy," just a great friend for everyone. Most important, I leaned to be comfortable with me, and not try to shine for anyone else. I traveled to other counties, went to nude beaches and thought nothing about it.

This is where the topic of being a nerd got to be OK. So what is I was smart and reasonably successful in my chosen field. I learned to be comfortable with me and not worry about impressing others with who I was.

I have noticed at clothing optional beaches that a good share of the people that my wife and I meet are not the "hot people," but average looking people in good jobs. They are the ones that can afford to take time off and go to places like St. Martin oe wherever that have clothing optional beaches. The people that I know that would be classified as hot, tend to hang around theor home base and be hot... the rest of us who are comfortable with ourselvels don't seem to mind as much letting it all "hand out."

Perhaps nerd is a negative term to some, bit I don'y think it really is. We are the people who learned along time ago to be comfortable with ourselves, as opposed to spending all of our time worrying about what other people thought of us - as a person as by our appearance. I have found that most people on clothing optional beaches and at naturist resorts are average people, not body beautifuls. In other words, not the "hot people" but those that might be considered nerds.

If people would classify me as such in the clothed world, I could care less. My wife and I are comfortable being nude at home, in our hot tub, at our cabin on the lake or in a nude appropriate area... we may not be body builders and we may be successful in our career choices, but we are very comfotable in who we are.

Any thought from the rest of you great people on this forum?

I'm a computer nerd - hobbyist and employment - and I'm proud of it.

Also a ham radio operator. Two weeks ago I was at the Maine Coast Solar Bares - probably 32 folks in attendance. Eight licensed hams in attendance.

So yeah, so what of it? I find that in my 40s and 50s, I have been very comfortable in my station in life. Which is what REALLY counts, not our standing at the country club.

Those folks who made fun of us in high school? We sure showed 'em, didn't we?

You bet. Almost everyone that I know from high school, who thought they were hot stuff, have failed miserably as adults.

It is amazing to attend high school reunions and see just how bad some people have done in life. I would imagine that it is quite a let down for someone who thinks they are god's gift to humanity.

well..I was always a jock in school...( back in the old days)...baseball...football...swimming...etc...and that is really where my comfort level of being socially nude began...in the locker rooms...showering...everyone was naked...no big deal...but I have to admit...social nudity is much nicer now...co-ed...LOL

What you said is interesting. It seems to me that there is a trend today to consider the naked human body as something evil and pornographic.

I mean, I am 35 years old, and when I was a kid, I could see posters of naked people, including children, in anyplace that they sell posters, from bookstores to drugstores to the shopping mall.

Now, the same posters would be purely illegal (a photo of a naked child is now considered as child pornography), and you pratically have to go to a sex shop in a big city to find a poster with a naked man or woman.

I could talk also about how, in 20 years, in Quebec, we went from a situation where there was plenty of places you could be naked (around lakes and rivers) and how today thoses places are not welcomming naturists anymore.

It seems that we went from a society in witch the naked human body was something normal and natural to a place today, where it is considered dangerous to show.

WEBSTER'S NEW WORLD College Dictionary, 4th edition:
nerd(nurd) n. rhyming slang for TURD. [slang] a person regarded as socially dull, unsophisticated, awkward, etc., specif., as from being preoccupied with schoolwork, an intellectual hobby, etc. --nerdy (nur'de) adj.

http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/mask.gif
I don't see myself as being a nerd since I am not socially dull, unsophisticated or awkward.

I don't think your definition of a nerd is the same as the dictionary. I could be wrong?

I do not consider myself or my wife to be nerds. We are college educated Master's degree - both of us, well-rounded in our interests (she likes history, cooking, fishing, sailing, swimming (nude? yes), naturist hikes with me, camping, bicycling, and gardening), I like wood working, boat building, fishing and hunting, my restored 1934 Ford P/U, canoeing, camping, swimming (nude? of course), naturist hiking, bicycling, all things mechanical, and I am an outgoing person - she is not. But we are not nerds. We act our age, and fit in with others of similar age. We are not nerds. Dakotawalker and wife.

It is kind of amazing. I went to high school in a town that had large rural areas -- farm land. In the 1980's, the town "yuppified" -- and many of the school "hicks" -- some who grew up in abject poverty (I knew one kid who literally lived in a shack) became millionaires by selling off the 10-15-20 acres of farmland that they owned, and that is unused.

A friend of mine was impoverished but his grandfather left the unused farm to him. 20 acres. He sold off half of it to a contractor. 10 acres. House lots $250,000 each. Half acre zoning. Do the arithmetic.

Those kids who were on the honor roll wound up doing very well, too.

It was some of the in-betweeners -- the jocks, etc. who didn't.

To keep this on track, nudity? Back in the 60s, we had no hesitation about showering after gym class -- I wonder what the big deal is about it today.

Speaking of reunions it was the nerds who had not been successful after high school at our last reunion in neither mine nor my wife's class.

It was the perversion of Ronny Raygun that started the whole not taking a shower after gym class thing ... after all he said ketchup/catsup was a veggie for school lunches ... with the selfish me now, me later and you never mentality that we are suffering the effects and affects from still today.

Please understand, I am not meaning nerd (or geek) in a negative sense... I just thought it might be interesting to see how many people on this forum might have observed a link between being comfortable being nude in public with having to learn to be comfortable with themselves rather than worrying about always impressing other people about how cool they were.

The problem with any generalized term is that it only fits part of the time. Afterall, not all "nerds" are comfortable being nude in public.

NudePete

Nerd/geek...definitely.

I was never in the cool group (and never wanted to be for that matter!) I suspect that people in this category realize it quite early in life and consequently also learn to accept themselves early in life also. A person who has accepted him/herself can more easily accept other people's simply being what they are. Such a person is probably more predisposed to nudism than the average person for that very reason.

I was labeded nerd/geek at school and i guess that was a way for me to come to terms with who i am and not care what others thought. Looking back on those i went to school with, i would have to say the ones that weren't cool have better got on with their lives then the ones who where worried about what others thought and putting labels on the ones they didn't like...

I'm a total Nerd.

Honestly. I think that that sort of catagorization only exists in high school. I soon found out that there is no such thing as a "type" of person. We are all individuals and the only thing that might make us one way or another is either how we choose to view/label ourselves or the eye of the beholder.

I feel nudists are nothing more than people who have decided to live as individuals and worry a little less about living for others. Perhaps that is what can make a nerd a nerd, or a geek a geek, or an etc. an etc.

Personally, I don't think reaching a point in life where you decide to stop living in the shadow of what other people might think is such a bad thing.

I confess, I'm a nerd.

- I majored in biology with a minor in molecular cell biology.
- When I have cable I choose Discovery channel or The Learning Channel. Without cable it's usually PBS.
- I don't drink, don't smoke, never did drugs....so I'm not exactly a party animal.
- I like web design and I enjoy teaching myself things like HTML, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Flash. Currently I'm learning Linux.
- When I'm at the bookstore I pretty much hang around the computer books, and if I'm in the magazines I pick up computer and/or techy magazines.
- I've spent hours lately reasearching how to build an electric bike or car.
- I didn't watch the Superbowl, I'm watching the Olympics.

I guess I do "cool" stuff too, like surf or play guitar. But, if you really know me, you know I'm a nerd.

As someone that fits the "nerd" category, I tend to agree with the topic title. I was not part of any popular clique in high school in California. In my spare time, I was in the science room talking with a few like - minded people. I was outgoing enough to be elected as senior class treasurer. My science project won a fourth place at the International Science Fair in Fort Worth, Texas in 1969.

I found that I enjoyed naturism when I was invited to Lilly Valley Park in Fort Erie, Ontario http://www.lilly-valley.ca/ in 1973 during my first year at SUNY Buffalo as a graduate student. I'm comfortable with myself - and feel OK with being an non-conformist. I like that when I'm with other like - minded nudists that I'm much more aware that we are basically all alike without our clothes.

I also was glad that I learned how important it was to be physically fit while an undergraduate. I started long distance running in 1969. I have probably jogged about 20,000 miles since then. I just completed my third marathon, the White Rock Marathon in Dallas with a respectable time of 4 hours and 51 minutes. I'm now 54, weigh about 200 pounds, and am 6 feet 3 inches tall.

While my parents enjoyed nude sunbathing at their high desert property in California, I never saw them naked. They did not discuss with me how they enjoyed being naked. I have talked about my nudism a few times with my mom since I graduated from high school. She is accepting.

It's striking me that to be a nerd, you have to like math or science. Phew! I was smart kid and kids put me in the "nerd" category if they didn't know me because I had glasses and was a good person. But, I played a lot of sports and didn't sit around all day talking school or anything when I had free time. So, I don't think I actually fit the nerd category. Maybe out of the ordinary or independent, but not a nerd.

tomkojohn

Others might have called me a nerd in high school, but I always thought of labels as never being quite right. Perhaps this is why I am attracted by naturism. I played sports in high school (ski team, tennis, etc.), but was also in debate, chess, and other "intellectual pursuits." I never saw a conflict in these, and always considered that injuries could always stop me from being physical, but most injuries would let me continue pursuit of intellectual areas.

Being considered smart, many other students would automatically make assumptions about me some of which were true, many of which weren't. This is the problem with labels, and not getting to know people.

One example of how being smart benefitted me in social ways was that I took up horse back riding. Many guys gave me a hard time about this (considered it not cool), but I had figured out that this was an activity that had a large number of nice looking girls in it, and that by joining I had a distinct advantage in dating them over other guys.

Now, I try to understand people I meet as individuals. As I have grown older, I realize that people are in some ways very complex creatures, and also they are a changing target (sometimes we can learn! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif) Then again, sometimes some people we know (especially those that drive us nuts) are all too predictable -- this doesn't mean that they aren't complex, just that some of their behaviors are fixed.

In any case, I revel in the diversity evidenced by the answers to this question in this community. It is fun to meet and discuss issues with all sorts of people. Only by trying our ideas against others do we refine them and gain so much by doing so.

Well this email is a lot longer than I had intended, but with the cold weather around here there has been less chance to get out and be naked!

Many guys gave me a hard time about this (considered it not cool), but I had figured out that this was an activity that had a large number of nice looking girls in it, and that by joining I had a distinct advantage in dating them over other guys.

So I'm not the only one who joined a number of clubs and high school classes based on the number of girls? I'll tell you, I had a great time being in the literary magazine staff, choir, and drama among all of the beautiful girls.

Being a nerd is the prime way I have found fun and interesting people in my life. I pity those that have no intense interests.

Ahh, Priester 'Adam and Eve' kits. I've built several in HO and 1/24- 1/25 scales.

BTW my N scale layout is stalled. I am trying Woodland scenics items instead of plain paint. Got to gather the courage to fail once or twice before I get it right.

Like some of the others, I did not have the grades to be a Geek and was to much of a rebel to be a nerd.

Looks like the HO scale people really could use some more sun! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif Really, some tan lines/tanned skin would make it look more realistic.

Model railroading doesn't get nerdy unless you have computer controlled tracks. Anyone have a large setup totally automated? I worked on such a set up with a friend in high school, but he was more into it than I.

Loved the nude campground! That's the second extensive nude area I've seen on a model railroad--the other one is a beach at a club in Massachusetts (and none of the bathers grab towels when a train goes by). And I visited a guy who had his own layout and he'd put a few nude sunbathers on top of a building that had a flat roof.

Tomkojohn, plenty of model railroads are connected to computers these days, but generally it's done to interface signals and controls, not to run the trains. We want to play with our toys ourselves, not let some damn machine have all the fun!

tomkojohn, sounds like you are a "Jock with brains" as well. We are that rare breed that can see the benefits of all activities.

So how many of those horse riding girls did you get to date? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/eusa_dance.gif

Definitions of Nerd on the Web:

* A computer expert by aptitude and not mere training. Usually male, under the age of 35 and socially inept; a person whose tremendous skill with operating or designing computer hardware or software is exceeded only by his, rarely her, passionate love of the technology. See also hacker.

* Someone who is socially inept and unstylish; especially one with an unnatural devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits.

* A nerd is very similar to a geek, but with more RAM and a faster modem. Nerds often find geeks dull because geeks don't spend enough time talking about computers.

* A person with limited social, but advanced technological skills and interests.

* 1. A creature in a Dr.Seuss children's book, If I Ran the Zoo. 2. A socially inept or unattractive person. 3. A person who is more interested in pursuing intellectual interests than in keeping up with trends in fashion. Since the Internet revolution, "nerd" has become a less pejorative term, and "computer nerd" is even used with admiration.

* Traditionally, the designation nerd (occasionally in the form nurd) applies to an intellectually gifted (probably > 120 or so IQ) but lonely and socially awkward person, one fascinated by knowledge, especially science and mathematics, and less interested in physical and social activities. Visual impairment (hence the glasses) and some form of High-Functioning Autism are also common characteristics, and the social impairment can often be explained by the latter. ...

NERDS CAN BE NUDISTS and NUDISTS MAY BE NERDS

I don't think I am a NERD, although (I think) I am intelligent, I am interested in NUDE physical and social activities, although I have a computer with more RAM and faster modem I don't talk about it, I am not socially inept and my clothing is "stylish (none). http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

Hi,

I was considered a nerd in school because I was neither brain nor brawn, and life didn't get that much better for me when I entered the workforce.

I'm not very computer literate, nor do I have an interest in 'nerds' activities (e.g. computers, Star Wars/Trek conventions, or ham radio).

With that said, I've never been one who's been a catch with the girls or had any social charm - I could swear that Blur must have written the song "Charmless Man" about me!

Not ALL naturists are nerds. I can be classified as one, but the person who calls me a nerd stereotypes and stereotyping's wrong.

Same here. The one person who labeled me as a nerd to my face could be considered to be a jock himself.

By the way, no offence was meant by this guy, and none was taken by me. We were reminiscing about how each of us were categorized back in high school.

Perhaps it only takes a sensitive and thoughtful person to also be a nudist. So anyone who knows me should be able to say, 'He's sensitive, caring and thoughtful. I'm not surprised to learn he's a nudist as well.' But I am also a Nerd and make no excuses for my love of technology, communicating with strangers online, tinkering with otherwise ancient computers, and watching the Discovery/Science channel.

If a "nerd" is what I am, then the world could use a few more of us! I did not bully people in high school even though I took karate lessons and was forced to defend myself in JUNIOR high shop class once. It did not change who I was in my heart and who I am today.

To bad we cannot get points for this on employment applications. Hmmm, maybe I will list that under "Other Interests" on the next few applications and see what happens. They will probably just get shreded anyway, but maybe one or two interesting inter-cubicle/inter-office conversations will be inspired. Heh. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sneaky.gif

Speaking of points... Here's my sig:
