Deep Purple lead singer and original Jesus Christ Superstar singer Ian Gillan has created a controversery in classic rock by publishing two nude photos on his website and in his latest tour book that he sells at concerts. It was done to take a jab of censorship in western societies.

Gillan is best known for singing the 1972 Deep Purple classic "Smoke on the Water".

Gillan's website is down now. I wonder if it's something involving his pics.

You could tell he was in a smoothie stage with the "Batman" photo.

The site has been down for several hours. Don't know if the photos are the cause or what.

There is still debate on these photos on the band's website. One guy is even argueing that these photos is exhibitionism, but posing for Playboy is not exhibitionism because the person is getting paid to do so. (OK).

Here is a link to the debate about the photos.

go to page 7 and 8 of the thread. My nic on this board is "Diostillrocks" and I'm stating these photos are not exhibitionism.

Hmmmm...classic rock and nudity...

John & Yoko cover of "Two Virgins"
Janis Joplin famous topless photo
How many concert posters featuring nudes?
nudity galore at Woodstock....

Why are classic rock fans now getting upset about nudity?

I believe its in the right category as CFI often reports "Nudes in the News" even if not nudists or naturist related such as streaking, calendar posing, demonstations, and nude bike rides.

It is original and funny. Reading the second link on another forum or users group, that photo was from an old album, and not done in real time or during a concert. It looks as if there is water or something dark and murky below them. Maybe a walkway over a pond or something.

From the other forum: [Quote]

1. Gillan didn't pose for those photos to be part of the website. They are clearly from the mid 80's to early 90's. He probably had them in an album and decided to put them on his website as a statement against censorship. More people than you think have nude photos of themselves and their significant others than you think. As for the reasons for this I can't say other than maybe some of the stuff in the news regarding nude art in Britain and the USA. Gillan does have strong political views as the song Mary Long attests. In the Perhillion DVD from 2001, Gillan did throw in the phrase "They hated nudity" when introducing Mary Long as being about two annoying people.

2. So if you are getting paid for a nude photo, that's not exhibitionism, but if you do it for free, then that is exhibitionism?

It is irrelevant that those photos were taken earlier.

Sorry, but I'm not going to continue this. Read the definition of exhibitionism and make up your own mind.

After a lot of consideration around the reaction to this picture and other things, I feel individuals like Ian Gillan fulfil in our culture a similar function to the Heyokas in Native American culture.

If you look at IG like this then he actually makes a lot of sense. [ Did I really say that?!! ]

They jolt everyone along by making extreme and challenging gestures - nudity, mooning, streaking, cross-dressing.

They are a culture's "contraries".

Which means they often end up doing things - to use a good Olde Englishe phrase - "arse about tip" !

And this picture is a fine example of exactly this phenomenon in a very literal sense!

I would guess he finds the reaction of the average and supposedly open-minded Rock n Roll fan "very interesting".

Where was the picture taken?
I'd say in the Camen Islands, on a restricted nude beach, where most all would be missing a main article of clothing or two... any considering this?

Or they could have been taken in Gillan's house and backyard. His house probably had a large private yard where he could do this. Most rockstars don't live in crowded urban neighborhoods or cookie cutter suburb subdivisions.

Blackmore has a large backyard and I read somewhere that he and Candice has pagan ceremonies (May poles) there despite neighbor complaints. Incidently some pagans so their ceremonies skyclad (their term for "without clothes".)

I'm pretty sure it's Chet, the guy they made the song about.

Anyway, if Blackmore is a pagaan, then why do I have him stating he is "very" religious?
And another thing about that, he now says he and Candice believe in reiencartation as well, man he sure does seems to have either contridicted himself, or he really has some issues with his spirit.
I know one can always change their belief system, but this is ridiculous.

Oh the wealthy and bored... their entertainment values are so extreme.

Other examples of rock nudity.

Flea of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers played nude during his band's entire set at Woodstock99.

Madonna had a photography book of herself. Though that would come close to being defined as porn.

Album covers featuring nudes.

Led Zepplin's Houses of the Holy.

Comedy relief ...

As for Madonna's nude book - does it really matter if some was near porn, when she has such a good, fit, healthy and attractive body..

Isn't that why you look at such photos - to appreciate the human form ?
