Canada Day, July 1 came and it looked like a good morning.
I wanted to go back to the eastern tolerated clothing optional beach in Toronto between Victoria Park Avenue and Warden and check it out, after I had found out how easy access is now that the water is down so low. For those of you who don’t know this beach, it is at the foot of sand cliffs so is a bit hard to get to and out of the way so is a perfect destination for someone who likes clothing optional beaches. I had wondered how crowded it would be since Hanlan’s Point (a legal nude beach) is now open – the issue with Hanlan’s Point is that a ferry has to be taken to the island.
I found a neighbourhood parking space easily close to the foot of Victoria Park Avene and walked east across the water filtration plant lawn to the fence boarding the eastern side. The cut in the fence was there and I made my way down to the beach. There were some kids and some parents and their dog. And then I started heading east. I was not sure where the nudity would start and was wondering since toplessness is now legal – would anyone topless be here as they used to fifteen years ago when I last visited.
The shore has a number of connecting crescent shaped cove beaches. I made my way east below the bluffs and treed cliffs through about four coves that are maybe each the length of a football field. There weren’t any sunbathers in any of these coves – in one of them there was a couple sitting on a log chatting but they had clothes on.
Then through the break in the path to the next cove I spotted two nude bodies sunning on the sand. As I approached, he took a towel and covered his gentials, which I though was sensitive in case he offended someone with his nudity. I could see that the couple were strategically located so that they could see beach walkers coming down the beach. His girlfriend had climbed out to the end of the breakwater wall that divides the coves and was sitting there on her towel sunning naked.
I continued on through about two more coves and then came to one that had broken concrete debris in it that made it a bit of a challenge to walk along the shore – just unstable underfoot. My thought was that this meant that it probably created a “barrier” for those who walk their dogs and therefore meant that nudism could be practiced with some ease. Perhaps it was too early but no one was on the beach beyond this concrete debris. I seem to recall there were about two more coves, one of which had a wooden structure on it that looked like it would be used for shade on a sunny day. After these two coves, there is a long wall built to prevent erosion and so I walked along it – it is probably the length of about four football fields and then I came to another cove.
I decided enough is enough – I will start something and decided to go the east end of this cove that had a sandy area, it was off the access path to more coves since there were plants between the beach path to the next cove and the sandy area and I slipped off my shorts and shirt, lay out my towel, pulled out a book and relaxed. It felt great again to have the sun shining down on my naked self! The time was about 10:15 am.
Since I was so far along the beach, I was not sure whether I should be concerned about covering up or not as walkers went by. A male-female couple came along and I did not want to offend her so I covered up. After that it was mostly males that came along so I did not worry whether I covered up.
About 11 am, someone else came along and went on the other side of the breakwater wall that I was beside where my towel is located. This guy has a smoke and then comes up over the breakwall. I guess during the smoke he stripped and he is walking nude but still has on his running shoes. He stops to ask the time, I tell him, he continues on west and then slips his shorts back on and exits west out of the cove.
Then three or four more guys walk through my cove. By now I had gone out to the end of the breakwater wall for a while to sun. I could see that they continued on and found some flat rocks on the next two breakwater walls.
I have to admit I am a bit of a watcher when someone arrives at the beach. Where will they sit? What do they take off first? Are they going to go nude? Do they have tan lines? Do they appear as if they are comfortable being nude?
So guy 1 arrives and he quickly finds a flat rock and sure acts like he has been here before given the speed by which he finds that flat rock on the breakwater wall. First he slips his shoes off, then socks and undoes his belt. He opens up his knapsack and pulls out a towel and lays it out on the rock. Off with the shirt, off with his shorts – can’t tell whether he had underwear on or not – but if there was he has pulled them off with his shorts. He stands there for awhile and then sits down totally relaxed. Because he is a football field away on the next cove breakwater wall, I’m not able to comment on his tan.
Guy 2 goes to the second breakwater wall and spends a fair bit of time searching for a rock to sit. My guess he has not been here much or is not comfortable since he takes some time to find a rock, get comfortable, strip, etc. He keeps his hat and sunshades on too – perhaps to be incongnito.
At this time I am curious if anyone is further down the beach east of me so I slip on shorts and shoes and walk down through the next few coves. After walking through the next three or four coves and not finding anyone, I decide to go back to my cove. As I walk back I question why I had on shorts and slip them off and walk naked down the beach – seems to match the attire of everyone else!
I come into the cove just before mine and guy 1 is walking along the shore. No need for me to worry about covering up as he is buff naked too. He is walking in the same direction that I am and I see that he has some faint speedo tan lines on his butt. I laugh and guess he is trying to get rid of them!
I come back into my cove and there is another fellow that has arrived. He is standing on the breakwater wall and has binoculars in his hands. I found this a bit of a surprise since he is naked except for the backpack on his shoulders. I would normally expect binoculars to be in the hands of some peeping tom all dressed up. He turns and says hello. And I notice that he is shaved smooth… the first I have seen at the beach. I have really come just to relax so don’t encourage conversation and he goes out to the end of the breakwater wall to sun.
I stay for about another hour to hour and a half. I get dressed and then head west to leave. As I leave, I encounter some more male nudists, some men in thongs, some women sunning topless, and several male female couples nude or in swimwear. A real mix for a clothing optional beach. They are almost all in the stretch between the long erosion wall and the cove with the concrete debris.
One of the male-male couples was interesting as one of them was nude with a great allover tan and the other had long basketball style shorts on. I always wonder if the textile partner will join the nudist partner…but good for them to be on the beach together.
There were several nudists west of the cove with the concrete debris. I did stop and ask one of the fellows sunning nude west of the cove with the concrete debris in it if nudism is pretty well accepted. I decided to ask him as he had been walking along the shore naked and was sunning in the part before the perceived barrier described above. He confirmed yes. He advised me to watch for the police boat from time to time but the residents all pretty much know that the beach is used clothing optional so don’t hassle those who choose to go naked. He did say that he is respectful of beach walkers, strategically reading newspapers so someone would need to really look at him to be offended.
I had such a great time, will need to go again soon!
