I arrived at the entrance to our local provincial park (in Ontario) at about 4 pm. It’s officially closed for the season, and gated, but it’s possible to walk in. There were two other vehicles parked there. I walked in on the paved entrance road, meeting up with no one.

When I got to the first beach access, there were two beach chairs set up with a cooler and umbrella but no sign of people. I wondered if (and hoped that) they were off in the bushes making love. I'm such a romantic.

I started walking down the beach along the water’s edge. This lovely sandy beach is more than 1 km in length, and is backed by sand dunes. 'Twas an absolutely perfect late summer afternoon.

I spotted two people (man and woman) down the beach walking my way, also along the water’s edge. As we met I said hello and commented on the wonderful weather. They responded, but not too enthusiastically I thought.

I continued down the beach. There were three people fairly near the far end walking toward me, but as I got closer, they crossed the beach and disappeared into the dunes.

As I approached the end, three more people arrived on the beach from that end. I’m sure they were surprised to see a naked man. I didn’t feel that it was appropriate to continue right to the end, because I would have had to pass them twice within a couple of minutes. So I turned around early, giving them a big wave as I did so.

At about the one-third point on the way back, a man walked out of the dunes opposite me onto the beach and we waved at each other. I remember thinking at this point that I wasn’t expecting to meet up with so many people. I continued on for a bit and then sat down to rest at a picnic table. As the man arrived where I was, he commented on how nice a day it was and we exchanged a few words. He was very friendly.

I continued down the beach and at the two-thirds point, I passed by a woman who was in the shallow water playing fetch with her German shepherd. The woman waved at me as I passed by and I waved back. I was pleased that she didn’t feel threatened by my approach.

I continued on and right at the end of the beach met up again with the original two people, now sitting in the lawn chairs that I mentioned earlier. They did not look up, so I passed on by without saying anything.

I met up with several people on my beach walk, and got no significantly negative reactions, and a couple of positive ones. This suggests that the people who use this beach outside of official park hours aren’t surprised or upset at encountering nude people.

What a great experience and story. It would be nice if that could be an everday occurance.

Gary Naturist,

Why would you be so surprised that others will use the beach on a perfect afternoon even though the provincial park is closed for the season? Just because the park is closed does not mean others don't go there to enjoy the sun or the water.

I am with you in wishing others could accept simple nudity. On the other hand, I am not so sure you advanced our cause. What one does not know is what those encountered did after leaving the beach. They might have alerted the authorities and will provide a surprise when you return to the beach on other glorious days.

I wish you luck on pushing the envelope with the clothesfree in everyday life approach.

I hope that you are not jailed like Gough, The Naked Walker in the UK.

sounds like it's a place for all to enjoy after season. no problems with the law so you were lucky there and that shows no one seemed concerned. glad your experiences are boosting your confidence of being nude around others. keep up the experiences.

Gary,

Just curious - do you think Canadians are more tolerant? Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Yes, I do think that Canadians are more tolerant in general and of nudity in particular. In part, it comes from our polite nature.

And a cop that would act like the one in your story.

I'm afraid our local police would say something like this.

"We will go out and arrest him, turn all the information over to the local news, and wait for the court to decide if he actually broke a law."

I was at Apollo beach in Florida once very early in the morning as I wanted to catch the sunrise over the ocean. When I parked the car I was only the second car there that day. I walked down the beach and found a great spot and got naked.

About 20 minutes later a family (mom, dad, two teenage boys) came walking my way with all of their beach stuff. They stopped about 50 yards from me and the father came over and very pointedly asked if it was legal to be nude on the beach. I smiled and said that I was sorry he must have missed the small national park sign that said that you may encounter nude sunbathers past this point.

I got the surprise, he said oh great, they were hoping to find the nude beach and had missed the sign! He signaled his family to come join him and they set up very near me. They were from Missouri and this was their first time to the beach.

We had a great time that day sharing stories and enjoying the beach.

Nathan,
It sounds like your day was very good! It was a good turn of events, because they could have also beed disgusted, called the police, and you could have been arrested. Well, if you were in central texas. I don't know about North Carolina. I am glad for both you, Gary, and you, Nathan. http://clothesfreeforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I don't know if this is the case or not, but I disagree with going nude in public "textile" places. There are better (meaning less potentially offensive and more leagal) ways to promote oneself and/or nudism.

I'm afraid not all Canadian Cops are as liberal Gary. I live in S. Ontario quite close to a large Prov Park, which has an "unofficial c/o beach" which has been in use for at least 40 yrs.

I've being going there for about 12 yrs, and the Police usually visit several times a year responding to complaints of nudity. No charges have ever been laid has far has I know, but they have always cautioned us!

Two police officers once threatened the parents of two naked kids.. (2 yrs & 3yrs old) that if they didn't put clothes on the kids, they would be reported to the Childens Aid Society!?!

The Parents later complained to the Park officials and to the Police Dept.

Unless it is winter, why not let toddlers go nude? It's good for them. Sounds like loving parents to me.

I have visited the beach Duneman refers to many times over the past 20 years. My experience has been it is much better now than 15 or more years ago. When I fist visited I had to fend off othe occasional "cruiser" but now it is a much more open and user friendly beach.

Same here, for several reasons. You can get in trouble with the authorities, you can offend other people, plus this is no way to promote naturism as many people will see it as exhibitionism. I think there is a time and place for everything, including naturism. I support and practice naturist lifestyle in designated areas or certainly well out of sight of those who may be offended. Here we have many nude and c/o beaches, but if I'm not familiar with the specific beach I always stick to the rule:
if you don't see anybody else in the nude, don't be the first one.

I think that in general, Canadians are definitely more tolerant and open minded. As an example, we've had one of our national TV networks broadcast uncensored versions of The Sopranos and The Osbornes with little or no outcry from the general public.

Good story Gary, you're far braver than I would ever be.

One of our clothing optional beaches is in a provincial park. The forecast looks promising for tomorrow so I think I'll pay a visit although I think I'll be confining myself to the accepted nude use area. Probably be one of my last visits of the year given the arrival of Fall. http://clothesfreeforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I admire your fortitude and bravery in overcoming a potentially arresting experience.

The winter months in the panhandle are quite cool and most tourists migrate further south. This makes for some great nude hiking thru the duneland preserves along the Emerald Coast.

"I always stick to the rule:

If everyone always stuck to that rule, we wouldn't have any nude beaches. Would we? http://clothesfreeforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
