OK. So I was at a customers place last week and one of the engineers asks if I'm going to be watching any of the Bronco games and if I want in the office pool.
I told him no and that I had no interest in football. He asked if I was nuts or something. I proceeded to tell him that I could be just as happy in the broncos left Denver and have no interest in football as they are a bunch of overpaid children. I told him some other things that I thought about men wasting hours upon hours watching football and if I had 4 hours to kill I would do something enjoyable, like hitting my thumb with a hammer. His mouth was open and he looked at me like I said I liked to kill puppies and eat them.
So, what is the fascination, bordering on worship, some people have for football? Has the NFL just sold it that well?
Honestly if the weather was nice, I would rather be nude at the reserviour.

it has to be a fascination. After all, this happens in all sports doesn't it. Look at baseball, basketball, Nascar, WWE, and so on. It is just a love for some and not for others. Don't hate on them for it. After all, can't we also watch the game outdoors and nude????????

No. you aren't. I will sometimes watch a football game, but it sure isn't something that I care all that much about. The game might be on, but that doesn't mean that I am going to be glued to my chair watching it.

Thank you/Merci beaucoup, BinCo. You have stated so clearly what I have wanted to say for many years to several people: Get outside! Be nude! Stop being couch potatoes!

I am with you. But then again, I am a girl, so I have an excuse.....I think. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
I am a Canadian who will enjoy a hockey game if given the chance to go to a live game. I might even be able to enjoy a soccer game. Both games have a point. Well, sort of. I fail to see the joy in seeing a bunch of grown men piling into heaps on top of a ball, puck or whatever.
I am not always sure which team even plays what anymore. Since there are more than the original six of hockey I don't know whether the team plays hockey, basketball or croquet. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/beam.gif

How can so many Yanks be so obsessed with a game that is actually the number 3 or 4 football code in the world?
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/tongue.gif
[Want to insult the Aussies? Pick on Rugby League or Aussie Rules, as I don't bother with either of them, either..].
And that should really be considered more a game of "handball" rather than football..
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif
And that wouldn't even be in the top 10 sports if measured by participation rates...

no..your not nuts.
I find football watching to be less fun than watching paint peel...add snipers in the upper seats and it might, just might be a little more fun..after all,the only sports worth doing are aviation sports..I mean, get hurt playing football and end up disabled, get hurt sky diving and you'll never hurt again...that's a man's sport!
now seriously...football bores me to tears but I love flying and that bores some people..different stroke for ...you know the rest...sports,any sports can be great until the fans cross the line and try and force everyone to conform to their sports preferences and make people feel odd for not sharing the same passion, although I can't lay all the blame on fans.I'll bet a lot of money is spent by sports team owners and such to foster the need to conform in many sheeple so...perhaps it might not have become such a pervasive attitude without so much money at stake....
Of course I must except air racing, hang gliding, and all other aviation sports...come on..football?baseball?all those lawn bound kiddie games involving some kind off ball...ya ground kissin sissies! What kind of freak doesn't fly?If you can't participate at least watch Trek, don't you want to be,"of the body"?You know..."resistance is futile, you will be assimilated"
now back to a serious question....whats the stranger behavior?
painting yourself team colors for a game?
wearing a Star Fleet uniform for a convention?
wearing nothing and getting off the couch and participating in a sport?
I wonder what percentage of the general textile public finds the painted drunk guy normal, the Trek Nerd(Qapla' batlh je)a sad hopless dweeb, and the nude person a perv.
I wish we lived in a world where conformity wasn't such a powerful force.
oh well..enjoy your favorite passtime no matter if your a pro sports lover or a nude vollyball player or a Klingon glider pilot.

Okay, vintagecarguy,
you mentioned the airborne extreme sports like skydiving and hang-gliding...
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif
but what about the ground based sports like rockclimbing, mountaineering, caving and mountain-biking..
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/cool4.gif
or the water based ones - surfing, skindiving and scuba', kayaking and rafting..
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/smoking.gif
Different mediums, but often share similar ideals, goals and 'natural highs' ?

To each his own. Personally, I love football. You're right, though, when you say that there are other things you can do with your Sunday afternoons.

OK. Watching millionaires chase a ball does not entertain me. Nor does watching a billboard disguised as a car being driven around an huge oval.
Football games are not the ultimate battle of good v. evil.
I'm sorry folks, but athletes are NOT heroes.

Binco you hit the nail (not your thumb) on the head! To so many of my friends & aquaintences SPORTS OF ALL KINDS IS A RELIGION! And thus Sacrosanct.
Besides it gives them something to talk about. What puzzels me is whay they can't find something more meaningful to talk about -- like "Why can't we go naked here?"!
Texasjoe - It's off the subject but I second your patriotic sentiments!
Lets return sanity to gov't!

My favorite thing to do would be to watch my Huskers play football while I was at the reservoir nude.

nunne;
A friend in Oklahoma told me that the large "N" or the corh huskers's helmets stands for nowledge.
We Canadians see huge crowds at U.S. college and pro games that are televised. This leads us to believe that all Americans are fans. Obviously, from this thread, this is not true.
I follow baseball, hockey, and football with great interest. But, agreeably, the players are drastically overpaid.

I'm nuts too. Last spring, I was the only person in Ottawa who was quite happy to hear second hand how the Stanley Cup was going. Other than women's beach volleyball, watching sports to be a waste of time.

Ha, I'm not nuts afterall!
I agree with you chuckincville. Some guys want to talk about nothing besides sports. With everything happening in the world, why are sports the only things some guys can converse about? I have lost many a friend for 5 months of the year to football. I wonder if the divorce rate increases at that time. Some of the wife's friends complain about the hubby being glued to the tube.
Oh well, each to their own. It's just frustrating that so many guys are brought up thinking that sports is the most important (or a close second to family) thing in the world.

I have been thinking about how to respond to this, and since reading some of the other posts, I think I am ready. BinCo, no you are not nuts, personally I feel the same way about baseball, but I think what it comes down to is some people take things to far. It could be sports, religion, politics, etc. There is a difference between enjoying watching some games and a fanatic, just as there is a difference between going to church and a fundamentalist.

Walter05 - It is true that the big red N stands for nowledge. And we're nearly as proud of our academics as our football. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/beam.gif

I enjoy following the progress of a few sports teams (GO INDIANS!) but have no particular desire to actually watch the games ...
I'm a bad spectator.

Add me to the list of those not particularly interested in football. I used to follow the Cowboys years ago, but for about a decade my schedule meant sleeping on Sunday afternoons. Now that I'm awake again at game time, I just have no interest in turning a game on, and football isn't the only game I lost interest in during that decade.

Well according to Sanslines I'm a bored old man so what else is there for me but sports. Guess, I'll stop playing first base and stop fencing and stop riding my mountain bike (Mrs. USMC extracted a vow about motorcycles after my last lay down) and just just become a viewer.
Seriously, some people go overboard, but I enjoy watching the Cowboys play and some of the playoffs. And enjoy the Astros except when they're climbing up into their own butts and hiding out as they are this year.
Life goes on if I miss a game, but it does get a bit awkward on Thanksgiving since the Cowboys traditonally play an important game.
Aw, what the hell, I'm as nuts as the rest of you. The Dish has given me this great free channel with Rugby, Soccer, & Gaelic Football so, I always have some sort of game available. Then, there's always Notre Dame football. And, don't forget those two horse racing channels.
It's a wonder I get anything done.
Oh hell, just forget it, will you.
Yes, dear, I'm coming....

Why not come to Camp Pendleton and engage in a real sport (boxing) with a real Hollywood Marine - you know, the kind you termite hill freaks detest so much.
