A funny one! - Reminds me of the other one with the Scots sitting next to the Queen and one kilted fellow has his kilt pulled up. Does anyone have that photo? Perhaps it could be paired with this one.

tiger, do you have withdrawal symptoms when the power goes off?

There's a flash of lightning: the power goes off. We're used to it now, and pretty cool about it. I have a UPS on the computer, and it gives time to shut down properly. But I do get a bit edgy after a couple of hours with no power!

I find the article on the urban legends site somewhat funny. They were questioning why or whether the colonel in question was wearing underpants. Anyone who has been near Highland Regiments (Canadian at least) knows about the term "Regimental" and what happens if a kilt wearer is challenged about his "regimental" status in the mess!

I do, I do, I do! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
(It isn't just Canadian Regiments though.)
I prefer "Traditional" over "Regimental" myself ... that leather strap can be a bother. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/eusa_dance.gif

Still_Boreas,
Being American, I don't have the foggest idea what happens if a kilt wearer is challenged about his "regimental" status. I believe that the tradition is that one does not wear underpants under the kilt, as has been shown in several pictures on this forum. What happens? I am sure that others of us naive people would like to know.
Thanks.

I had no idea but approve the practice. What a great way to feel more comfortable in clothes. May be we should wear kilts here in the usa.

Well, if you are in a Highland Regiment (aka a Highlander) and in a mess (the bar) you can challenge your buddy to prove he is "regimental". If he proves to be regimental then you buy the house a round. If he is not regimental, then he buys the house a round. I don't know what happens if there happens to be a female wearing a kilt because that did not happen in the units that I was sharing a mess with.

According to the Scot's the kilts are really warm. They are usually woven out of wool (traditional ones) and they say they must be worn 'like a true Scotsman' ie no underwear. I've seen proof with Scottish friends whom I traveled to London with. In a bar some women asked if they were true Scots, and without saying anything they lifted their kilts to some Oohs and aahs. The sporran was used to carry a flask of whiskey too, just in case you caught a cold breeze LOL

shaneone, your right about the Kilt being warm, it is cool as well.
And yes a Kilt can ONLY be made of woven worsted wool.
Proper weight is 16oz cloth and 9 yards of it, pleated 27 times (for a Regimental or short Kilt).
One may wear 14oz cloth, but everyone will know it.
The Kilt may contain more yards but not less.
A Full Dress Pipe Major's Kilt can contain 14 yards
Traditional wear is nothing under the Kilt save the tail of the Linene (Shirt).
Regimental wear is similar to Traditional save a leather strap is used to hold certain appendages up and away in the manner most of you have seen on any National Geographic special on the tribesmen of New Guinea.
You're a wee bit off about the Sporran though, it is used as a wallet, traditionally it was a food pouch, and the whiskey flask in carried on the back of the Kilt Belt behind the Dirk -- never have your single malt on your Claymore hand side.
Still_Boreas, should a female be a'wearin' a Kilt and challenged as to her 'regimental' status, she would be held to the same standard as her male compatriots, which can make for a pretty expensive night at the bar, now can't it? The odds of a female wearing a Kilt are long as traditional wear for female Highlanders is the Airseade over a chemise and to be true to highland warrior status she would be thus attired. This however does not mitigate the 'regimental' challenge though as traditional wear is the same as a Kilt -- nothing beneath.
