Just got back from 2 great weeks at Haulover Beach. Weather was great and there was little damage from the hurricane. There is now a heavy presence on weekends from SFFB, the founders of Haulover as a nude beach and they sell ice cream, fresh fruit salads, etc., as well as cool t-shirts, etc.

The encroachment by overly tall condo towers continues. Here is a photo taken on New Years Day.

Thanks for the report, sun. They didn't have ice cream or fruit salad last time I visited.

I'm about ready for another trip there.

Wow. It has been close to 5 years since I have been there and it is hard to believe how much construction has occurred. I would like to visit in late April or early May if I get a chance to do it.

Can you imagine the amount of damage that would occur if this area took a direct hit from a category 3 or higher hurricane?

The tall buildings are constructed of reinforced, poured in place, concrete and they aren't going anywhere. Some damage occurred to glass railings and windows on the ocean side and there was damage to some of the lifeguard stands. The pink stand at the beach entry has returned to its original gray wood color. I actually was thinking tsunami while at the beach because it was the anniversary of the tragedy in 2004. The whole area is maybe 6' above sea level. I wondered if we could run up to the highrises and if they would let us in to escape the waves.

We were there the day of the big pour. Photographs of the development show it including the site of the only small motel left, the ocean palms. Maybe they haven't bought the property yet, maybe they have. Trump is really a bit player, I've heard, the dezers own most of the development. There is also a major "trump" development a bit north with 3 towers including a trump plaza hotel. I think the name Trump Plaza has more appeal than the Dezer Plaza hotel would have.

Originally there was going to be a different development including a small Hilton. Now more of these gargantuan towers. I don't think there is sun on the beach at these towers after 1:00 PM. Sadly, the city has allowed this development to go over the top, and the only road which services all of these buildings is AIA, which is only 4 lanes and is frequently blocked with construction equipment. There was a problem a few months ago which blocked the whole road so NOW the mayor is seeking a route for another road, not easy since there is water on both sides of the road.

The only saving element is that most of these condos in these buildings are being bought by speculators or people who use them infrequently. When the baby boomers come down in a few years, and actually live in these units, it will be intolerable.

Meanwhile, as the picture shows, its kind of cool to walk the beach seeing the adjacent buildings. It emphasizes how unique Haulover is as the beach isn't hidden away like the California beachs are; like some shameful secret. I guess when you spend 4 million on a unit with a view, you really get a view!

I suppose that some of those residents with a high-rise tower view, will not always have their telescopes and telescope cameras focused on the ships at sea.

A friend of mine, who doesn't know we frequent Haulover, has a relative in one of the highrises. And yes, he does have a highpowered telescope on his balcony. I asked my friend if you could see anything and he said, not really. I always try to wave when I walk in that direction (north).

Don't know about this time of year, but I will find our this Thursday as I plan to spend some time there in the afternoon. How about you?

Last time I was there on a week day in early December), the weather was not good, so the attendance was poor.

thanks -- hope the weather holds; 75 and partly cloudy in Miami would be perfect! Looking forward to an enjoyable afternoon.

We're probably going back to Haulover this spring or summer. Last time we stayed at Newport Beach Resort. It's an OK place, but the walk is a litte long. Is there a closer place, better than like the Ocean Palm or old Day's Inn to stay at a reasonable price for 2 people?

http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/disappointed.gif All this talk about "Going to the Beach"

http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/disappointed.gif It's not even the middle of winter, it's snowing, and the cat's on fire...j/k.

It really makes me miss the beach, nice warm enough weather to go outside in.

I've got to get a "looking out at the water from the beach" screen saver.

Peace

That picture almost makes me cry - I'm in NYC and while we've had some oddly warm weather, I won't be going to the beach anytime soon up here.

I've been to Haulover only once, the Monday after Katrina hit. There was only minor damage to trees, but the beach became quite eroded at spots, creating a 5' high ridge right near the water. In places it had either not been affected or had been repaired.

To me, it was almost a perfect day on an almost perfect beach, and I'm so glad I made it down there!

Please send reports and pictures like this one, it makes my cold toes slightly warmer thinking about that sand!

I miss that place. This was the first time in 6 years that I didn't take my vacation there.

I have to get back there next year if there is still somewhere close to stay.

I hope Ocean Palms never closes.
