Clarendon resident wants nudists to show some respect (http://www.timesargus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070726/NEWS02/707260341/1003/NEWS02)
With the way things have been going lately I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/sad3.gif I know its wrong to say this, but sometimes I just want to find these people and give them a piece of my mind (but the way I am sometimes, giving them a piece of my mind would just be me telling them to shut the f*ck up and mind their own business).

I completely agree. If people enjoy clothes, they should wear some. Otherwise they should mind their own f'ing business.

Well, I guess if there are no laws against public nudity in the aforementioned communities, then they should leave it be unless the nudists are infringing their lifestyle on unwilling participants or flatout harassing people who are clothed. I am sure the relevant boards, commissions, or councils will handle the situation most tastefully for the sake of everyone.

What the heck is "show some respect" supposed to mean? There haven't been any incidents of nudists appearing in public in the town of Clarendon ... just how unrespectful have they been? I suppose "show some respect" means "keep their clothes on".
How about we strike a deal ... Clarendon residents should set aside two days a month to "show respect" to nudists by going about their business nude on those days.
Fair enough?

Good suggestion. Respect has to go both ways.
People who don't respect others are not respectable.

Here's an update (http://www.rutlandherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070926/NEWS01/709260350/1002/NEWS01) to the story.

I just read the follow up article. It seems to me that there will be people who will take the opportunity to enforce their own personal values upon others. Some people, possibly like the woman in the article, need to feel offended by atleast one person on a daily basis or they struggle in finding a reason to live.
When they can't find something to be offended about, they'll create one.

I totally agree Spiderthug. Those people need something in there life to keep them ocupied. Here in Michigan our state is in such a financial mess there is a possibility of the state shutting down for about a month. And some people worry about seing a nude person walking down the street, here's a hint-close your eyes and leave people alone!

Funny that. I always walk around with me eye - THUD!

Why are people here so indignant about this? The headline states:
"The idea of folks walking around town nude is unbearable to at least one Clarendon resident."
Yup. If people started walking around my town naked, I'd find that unbearable, too. But the residents haven't taken the law into their own hands, but complained to the authorities who are answerable to elected representatives. Nudists are free to make their own representations - that's how democracy works.
If nudists want to use certain locations in or around this town for their activities - fine - they should negotiate locations where this is acceptable to everyone else. But you have to give such measures teeth in the event that some individuals will push the envelope, and their luck, and get naked outside of the defined areas. That's why they need an ordnance.

"I know I'm not supposed to offend anybody, but how about them offending me," she said.
That quote from the updated article struck me as interesting. It made me recall something that happened at our local naturist beach a few days ago.
For those not familiar with Lighthouse Beach on Long Island (actually Fire Island which is a barrier beach satellite of Long Island), it is not totally remote, but neither is it easily accessible.
In order to get to it, one has to hike from the eastern most end of Robert Moses State Park about 1/2 mile along the waters edge to get to the beginning of LB which extends for about one mile (with a 200 yard clothed corridor in the middle for those tourists coming from The Lighthouse). Alternatively, one has to walk 1/2 mile along the boardwalk path of the nature preserve (deer, other small mammals, all sorts of birds and an array of plantlife), then 100 yards along a gravel road and then uphill another 100 yards over the dunes along another boardwalk path.
At the beginning of the beach in the first instance is a large brown sign that says "Clothing Optional Beach Starts at This Point". Only a blind person could fail to see it. At the top of the boardwalk entrance to the beach is another sign, "Beyond this point you may encounter nude bathers".
So it is quite clear that this beach is legally designated for those who wish to be naked while enjoying the beach the ocean and the sun.
And yet, one sees every day the inevitable gawkers. And then there are some who are self-designated morality police. There was one gentleman there on a past Sunday with a telescopic lens and a camera. He was looking through this, and it was unclear whether or not he was taking pictures of us or not. So a few men and women approached him and told him that it was rude to take pictures without permission. He replied that the behavior he was witnessing was "disgusting". There are no orgies going on. The behavior is typically the same as on the clothed (textile - I personally don't like that word but thats another topic) beaches adjacent and to the west. People are sleeping, sunbathing, eating, reading, listening to music, playing with frisbees or footballs, building sand castles etc.
Then he had the temerity to ask "Did any of you go to church today?" My first instinct was to tell him it was none of his Effing business. My second instinct was to tell him that in the religion of my own heritage the sabbath day was Saturday and not Sunday. My third instinct was to tell him I was an atheist.
I settled on "Hey, does your camera take pictures underwater? Can I see if it works?"
He left......rapidly.
