Federal auditors have accused the Bush administration of illegally disseminating covert propaganda in the United States.
In a blistering report, the investigators from the Government Accountability Office charged the administration had bought favorable news coverage of President Bush's education policies, made payments to the conservative commentator Armstrong Williams and hired a public relations company to analyze media perceptions of the Republican Party.
The contract with Williams and the general contours of the public relations campaign had been known for months. The report provided the first definitive ruling on the legality of the activities, the New York Times said Saturday.
Lawyers from the accountability office, an independent nonpartisan arm of Congress, found that the administration systematically analyzed news articles to see if they carried the message, The Bush administration/the GOP is committed to education.
The auditors declared: We see no use for such information except for partisan political purposes.

I think Bush, and his administration, should give the money back. They illegally used taxpayer money, and now they should give it back. This is the richest administration this country has ever had, I'm sure the money they spent doing illegal propoganda will not cost them too much of their wealth.
I sure don't want to pay for Bush's illegal activity and neither should you.

Bush spends an awful lot for a "conservative." http://clothesfreeforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Just read a great article regarding his spending in the magazine "The Week" - check it out if you can find it.

Has anyone checked the fine print in the Patriot Act? You might find a clause that leaves the current president in power during a time of (self) inflicted terror. Anyone that tries to evict him from the White House will either find failure in the Supreme Court of Bush or be deemed an enemy combatant and sent off to Gitmo without a trial.

Don't you think all political action committees, and parties spend campaign monies on things like this?
Propaganda is used by EVERYONE trying to sell something, or sway a decision. The purpose of media for the most part is to present a sales pitch for who ever pays.

True, but its not the government using YOUR taxpayer dollars for propoganda. The DNC and GOP parties use money donated by citizens who want to further their parties chances during elections and such. What the Bush administration did was to just TAKE your money, no matter your political offiliation, and use it for their political propoganda. Thats what is wrong.
Plus there is just the simple matter that it is illegal in the United States for the goevernment to distribute propoganda. (at least within the US borders, outside the US the government is allowed to distribute propoganda.)

The money spent did not belong to a political party or to a PAC. It was the public's money, tax dollars, money that is specifically illegal to be used for propaganda against the American public.

Thanks Hooked, I love that phrase - 2008: The end of an Error. It's a bumper sticker waiting to happen, and one I wouldn't hesitate to put on the old car bumper.

It is my hope that those thoughts are just my darkest political nightmare. Of course, who knows? There might be parts of the Patriot Act that have never been published.

Here's a funny aside, because of the title of this thread, I first thought it was another circumcision (restoration) topic
