View Full Version : YouTube Slander on Nudism

Hello All,
For those who don't know, I did what I thought was a small interview with associated press a few months ago. Turns out the topic of nudism was good for generating hits online, and it became a headline story on CNN, Yahoo, CBS, Fox, etc.
CBS NEWS (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/05/13/national/main2795995.shtml)
Recently I was directed to a video where apparently my name was mentioned. Turns out....it was an updated story on YouTube about nudism, reported by this lady named Kate Bohner. My name was dropped in about halfway through the segment.
The thing about Kate is that she's not a great journalist. She never spoke to me, but she took liberty to take what I had said and add inaccurate words and actions to my name. She painted me as some gung ho salesman....made me seem sleezy. But from the flavor of the story, she has that view of nudists to begin with.....
SO, if you'd like to check out the disappointing segment, here is the link....
Kate Bohner's Nudism Update (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tthfGssPOIU)
And if you have the time.... please post a comment or write her to request some real news, instead of this speculative fabrication.

She did make you sound like a guy that goes to bars and tricks people into buying a membership but I did watch that video before you directed me to it and I never even notice you were name dropped.

Interesting video, I dont think she painted you in a good light at all. But she seemed to make it seem like "nudism" wasnt all that great either with some under her breath remarks. Bummer.

I signed in and everything and IT WON'T LET ME POST MY RESPONSE TO THE YOUTUBE VIDEO!!!:
"Very irresponsible reporting, Kate. I love the way you play your words @ 2:20 when discussing Sam Miller "what he does is MAYBE go to a bar or something.." Do you know for sure if he goes to a bar? Why did you fail to mention that Sam Miller is a 32 year old medical STUDENT.
Shame on you for implying that nudism is simply superficial thinking the only reason why young people might want to go is to enjoy looking at other people in the buff. All you reported are your own assumptions.
Last don't use the term "college kids" in your summary: it only belittles us. If we're old enough to be thrown in jail, or sent to war, then I resent the term "college KID.""
Sam, do you think she could've misreported as a way to gain an ignorant audience?

Sam, can you get her for slander? I did a google search on KBTV and it seems like it's just one simpleton's opinion in everything pop culture. She has no merit.

Jesse, it looks like it took your first two sentences at least.
This lady is really revealing her lack of intelligence and sophistication. I suppose she cannot imagine nudism being anything than a big sex frenzy.
Seems bad journalists (and bad law enforcement) just shamelessly make up whatever they want to suit their needs - because they can usually get away with it.

Basically she seemed frivolous.

I had a hard time watching her. She was too twitchy. I started to think she might have a medical condition, lol.
Anyhow, hopefully people will realise that she doesn't know what she's talking about.

She might have been on something, let's hope it was only too much red bull.

That is what I forgot to touch on! Thank you. When she spoke of the baby boomers being the majority, of course the baby boomers lived in different times which may explain their high numbers. The 60's was about revolution. Compare the way of living now to then.

After 30 seconds, I wanted to push her into that river behind her. Someone who moves like that when giving a report, is certainly not educated in video journalism or reporting for that matter. If I knew her as an acquaintance, I couldn't stand to be around her.

Dr. I don't think you have much to worry about.
It is quite obvious from watching the video that this woman is not a journalist and her "reports" are sensational. I highly doubt that people take her seriously. I am sure that the station added her into their program to attract viewers. I mean look at her. She often swings her hair, the hand gestures, the clothing. I don't think people tune in for well researched reports or become informative on what is going on in the world.
Dr. you know, I know, and we all know what you do. We know you are not some troll salesman trying to get young people naked. You have a mission to change nudism by getting younger people interested. Most young nudists have the same mission. As a nudist, if the topic comes up with my young friends, I tell them of my experience and I invite them to join if they are up for it. I recommend places they can go, and sites they can visit to learn more. There is nothing wrong with that. It is no different than recommending a college for someone who may be looking to go to school, neighborhood to move in, or restaurant to dine.
So doc, don't sweat it

Everyone should go over there and add some smart comments; then vote her down to one star...
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif
And don't forget to vote on the other comments on there..
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
Then flag her as inappropriate when you leave - no point in encouraging the stupid, doped-up s**t.

I kind of got lost after hearing her say "every now and then I like to do what I call a follow-up story which is basically a story about a topic I've discussed before". From this and various Daily Show segments on word play, it is clear that President Bush's speaking style is becoming quite infectious.
But going back to the actual topic here, I do agree with basic view that an average person listening to her would have the view that Sam was some kind of sleaze. At the same time, if one tries to concentrate solely on her words and not the way she says them, I do not really have a problem with segment as a whole. If anything, I think her conclusion that young people are not into clubs because of the cost, not because of any specific lack of interest in naturism, is fine.
In short, its more the way she says it, not what she says.

given the head shots at the lead and the "KBTV" station ID this is, hopefully just part of a demoreel. I say hopefully because she'll never actually get hired to report on TV as she has far too many distracting body language tics (especially the swaying back and forth)
Also getting the name of the AANR wrong won't help her case.
If you really felt like replying to her I'm sure a quick internet search would yield her contact info.

Thanks to you all.....you are so kind http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif
I think the piece is just really a bad piece of work all around.... It makes nudism look bad, dropping references like "girls gone wild" is completely inappropriate. It's just annoying that she uses my name and fabricates me into some sleezy trickster.
I actually wrote her the other day, sent her an e-mail requesting that she take the video down and in turn I would give her an actual story to cover.....she has no idea that THAT could actually give her some credibility. She never wrote me back.
I also explained that while freedom of speech and freedom of the press were American rights, neither of those gave her the right to fabricate or smear a person's name/reputation. I used the big word "slander" which I'm sure she might have had to Google along with "Update Story" in order to define. Slander is a legally punishable offence....fortunately her lack of credibility saves her. KBTV...please.
I appreciate all the lovely comments added to the story....gave me and Pam a good laugh.

That video clip was completely unprofessional and clearly she didn't know what the heck she was talking about. I'm really impressed DrSurferDude that you actually reached out to her and wanted to do a proper interview after she just dropped your name on her piece of "journalism" without ever meeting you or talking to you. I'm sure it couldn't have been that difficult to write you an email and asked you about naturism.
Anyway, if you need any backup Doc, let us know. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/beam.gif

WOW! It is a shame that she resorted to the "quotes" as the basis for her story is most likely true-many of us have noticed the decline in attendance at the clubs by the younger folks. I agree with hm0504-post the CORRECT story on you tube!

Kate's 'amateur' news spots aren't that bad when compared to the 'professionals'. She does lose points for grossly misrepresenting Doc, and for the gratuitous 'Girls Gone Wild' allusion. But frankly, the press is notorious for getting things wrong. Without any exaggeration I can say that being correctly quoted is the exception - not the rule.
We are fortunate that Kate's 'nudism' stories are generally positive. I think that Doc should contact her and ask for a correction - it would set the record straight AND get another story posted - hopefully a positive one.
He could even invite her to do a segment of "Nudes in the News"

I contacted her last Friday. She, being the consumate professional that she is, never bothered to write back. I'm still waiting.
In my message I offered her the chance to do an interview story about the AANR Youth Ambassador program and the start of something new emerging on the nudism scene. But I guess something beyond a loosely held highlighter might be too much work for her http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
I agree with HM0504....I'm going to do a video message, telling the real story. I think Pam will be up for helping me...and I think we'll just have to be conveniently naked while abiding by the YouTube code of ethics.

I think it would be great if you could do a 'YouTube friendly' response in the nude ala' the Austin Powers nude scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVNCVDlANTs) , complete with music ... But that might require more than Pam holding a camcorder ...
... I don't mean with the sauntering and cavorting, but with some strategically placed titling obscuring the view as necessarily, an out of place table decoration, etc. Even some ironic captioning - like 'Nudists have nothing to hide', that happens to hide ... stuff.

I've been invited to join a K'B' fan group !!!
And that despite my comments being a bit rude...
so, I expect others who also made comments would also have been invited, as well ?

I find it disgusting that she compare nudism to "Girls gone Wild". I believe that she rattled her brains to much fron tossing her hair back so much. She does not act like a professional reporter is any way.

So then, Ed 2, why not go over there and join her fan club - if enough people from this site were to join, it might give people here more of a voice (as long as we nudists stayed reasonably respectful and decorous - so as not to destroy the fans' site - afterall, it's theirs', not hers..) - and you never know, we might end up with a majority in her fan club...
