Windows media works fine here on CFI media and other media, downloaded, and from DVD, CD's.

The latest show file specifications are: [Highest resolution]

show168ehi.wmv 172,651 4/22/2007
Time: 11 minutes 45 seconds
Bit rate 2015 Kbps
Size 640 x 480
Not Protected
Size 168 MB

Q1: Have you dowloaded and played CFI .wmv previously?

Q2: What Windows Media Player Version are you Using?

Q3: Does Windows media player play other types of media such as .MP3 MIDI, etc.

Q4: Are you downloading CFI .wmv by right clicking on the download, and selecting "Save Target As.."

Q5: Does your downloaded .wmv file size agree with the file size listed on the download right hand panel?

Q6: Can you open Windows Media Player by itself then do a file tab, open file?

Go to this link to test your .wmv and windows media player operation:

Link: Steve's TV Appearances Windows Media Format Test (http://www.grc.com/media.htm)

Let the forum know your answers and results, and we can go from there.

Most likely there is something messed up with the codecs installed on your system. The fix is to uninstall as many as you can from the windows control panel add/remove programs widget. And then install an up to date codec pak to bring all your multimedia codecs up to date.

If you don't even know what a codec is, you probably don't want to do all that.

An easy alternative is to download the free VLC media player. It can play almost any kind of video, as well as cd's, DVD's etc. And it doesn't require any codecs to be installed on your system - it is self contained.

VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/)

I should have left well enough alone! I was perfectly happy with Windows Media Player 11.

I installed VLC thinking they both could exist and be happy together. No, VLC took over Video and Audio File Associations, and well as File Icons.

That would have been ok but the Audio stuttered and skipped with VLC, and to use WMPlayer I had to open it up separately and do a file open and manually find the file and play. The VLC Player still had File associations and icons.

I don’t need something that doesn’t work 100% so I uninstalled VLC and back to normal with Windows Video Player version 11.

Still waiting to hear "whynot111" answers and input on the .wma test link, and if he has used it before successfully.

Gary, why didn't you use the install options? You had the choice to switch associations or not, you had the choice to put icons on the desktop, start menu and/or context menu or not.

VLC is very cool precisely because it is fully self contained - it doesn't mess with any Windows DLL's or installed codecs.

That being said, as long as Windows media player plays everything you want it to and you are satisfied with it, you don't need another player.

Personally I hate WMP. It is a bloated resource hog that tries to make me connect to media I don't want, and reports my actions to illuminati central.

I did use the install options but also switched associations thinking I could easily switch back and forth.

I think you posted that a long time ago and I used it for a while, but in changing systems and hard drives lost track of the name until you mentioned it or posted the link. I got it in my PowerMarks database now and can recall and be at any one of 16,314 URL/Links in less than 5 seconds.

Thanks for re-posting the name and link of the media player.

Gary,
Right click on the file, and choose open with, then choose program.
Select the program you wish to use, and then place a check in the box 'Always use selected program to open this kind of file."

Thanks Bob,

I never could get the VLC player to stop ocassional stutter, so I saved the install, and went back to Windows Media Player ver. 11 that works just fine for me.

I'm having a similar problem. I can open "nudes in the news", but I'm only getting the first 1 second of each video. "Right click and save as" for both the broadband-res and hi-res takes a second to download and when I play the file - with either Windows Media PLayer or Power DVD player - I find I only have a second of the show downloaded. I have been able to download and view shows for a couple years now, but this has happened on the last three. Anyone else have this issue?

Read the 2nd post down from the top as a check list and try this test link for .wmv files.

are you right clicking and going down to "Saving Target As" ?

Of course I read the other posts, and yes I (successfully) tried the test wmv. I still only get the first second of the show. Has something changed here in the way the shows are prepared? As I said, this has never been a problem until the last few shows. I don't have any problems playing or downloading other files from other sites.

I download every show and have since they started. I have not had had a problem with any of the shows this year, except one which stopped 4-5 minutes short of the end. Upon re-download it was fine. I have only had a problem one of two times last year when I happen to see the announcement and started downloading as corky was transferring to the server or had not finished uploading to the server, so I got a hung or incomplete download.

Corky has reminded others with download problems to clear their cache, and temp files if you have problems downloading.

I also am not able to successfully download the latest show in the highest resolution. I only get a 100KB file for show168ehi.wmv. I can download the lower resolution file. I get a 60,346 KB file for show168hi.wmv.

There is a problem. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/disappointed.gif

Right, NakedGary, that's is why I am reporting it. I cannot download the file. I am trying to download it and save it to my hard drive, not play it in media player. All I get when I right-click and save as is 100 KB, which I know is not correct. I can download the lower resolution file, so I think it's not me. The link must be bad on the site.

Hi, I am having the same problem. When I right click and save as, it only saves part of the file, ranging from a few seconds to almost one minute. If I left click to watch the file, the same things happens but then windows media player gives the message to say that it can not play the file as the server is busy or disconnected.

I just tested it at my work and home computer. The whole file is there and it downloaded fine. Try clearing your cache and temp files. For help on this go here: http://www.wikihow.com/Clean-Your-Computer

Good luck and have fun!

When you get a server error saying that it can not play the file as the server is busy or disconnected.

That would be a normal response due to the portion of the file you downloaded is not complete and stops abruptly.

Are you sure you are saving the file by right clicking on the download hyperlink and selecting "Save target as"
.
