Vermont Town to Drop Nudity Ban
Wednesday, August 22, 2007

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — It's back to clothing optional in Vermont's nudity capital.

A month after passing a temporary ban, the Brattleboro Selectboard rejected a proposed ordinance that would have made it permanent Tuesday. When the emergency ordinance expires next month, public nudity will be legal again.

To one Selectboard member, tolerance trumped all.

"We in this country are going down a slippery slope these days," said Dora Bouboulis, saying a national newspaper recently published an article about the emergency ordinance under the headline "Tolerant town gets intolerant."

She said it wasn't up to the town to restrict the right of people to be nude in public.

Before the vote, residents weighed in on both sides of the debate, with one opponent handing the Selectboard a petition with 967 signatures of people in Brattleboro and Windham County who support a nudity ban.

"What is the point, other than shock and awe, that the nudists are trying to make?" said Michael Gauthier, who presented the petition.

The permanent ordinance, which was rejected in a 3-2 vote, would have prohibited public nudity downtown and along the Routes 5 and 9 corridors.

Good to hear. Hopefully people will respect each other and mind there own business and let nudists be themselves and not bother them.

I want that everywhere. At least I know somewhere in the USA I can walk around naked.

Good news!

The 3-2 vote however suggests proceeding with common sense and with concerted support for tolerance advocates through continuing public discussion and thoughtful public information.

AANR where are you?

It looks like an amazing opportunity to highlight real nudist values (for instance, health and personal respect), to engage opponents in real discussion about behavior versus clothing (for instance, the distinction between "shock and awe" behavior and mere nudity within the bounds of normal behavior), and maybe to develop some sort of framework consensus that can be seen as a common sense model applicable elsewhere in the country.

Hi All..My wife and I have been following this story. We are glad that they have removed the ban on nudity but it was so close in the vote that next time it could pass if they change leaders in that town. I was wondering if nudity is allowed in just that town or all over Vermont? Does anyone who live in Vermont but visits Clothesfree.com know? I would like to visit there next summer and would like to have some information about Vermonts nudity laws before we go..Cheers..NoodJuggler http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/beam.gif

This is where we nudists can rise and shine by demonstrating civil non sexual nudity. Again we need to be respectful of those who do not approve. So little by little we will gain a better standing in at least the eyes of law in one state. One getting down, and 49 more to go.
