Hello "sxmtan",

Hippie Hollow (http://www.co.travis.tx.us/tnr/parks/hippie_hollow.asp) is a nice park, but it doesn't have sand beaches like you'd find on some lakes or rivers. Some photos are on this web site (http://www.hippiehollow.com/pages/Photos.htm). There are hiking trails and restrooms with flush toilets. The Day Use Fee is: $8.00, plus $2.00 surcharge (per vehicle).

You might try contacting the . They're a travel club based in Austin, and have members who frequent Hippie Hollow.

There's a popular restaurant just up the street from Hippie Hollow called The Oasis. You can eat there if you want but pic nics are more popular at HH. Also, they used to have pay binoculars so you could spy the nude area from the restaurant patio. Not sure if they still have them or not. But it's a popular restaurant with HH goers and those not brave enough to go to HH alike.

The Oasis burned to the ground last year. I haven't heard if they are rebuilding it, but I'll be @ HH in May so I'll see what I can see.

Unless things have changed, Hippie Hollow park does not allow parents to bring their kids. It's adults only. That is a sad commentary on the way the county regards social nudity: not for families.

I am surprised that there has not been more effort on the part of local nudists to put an end to this injustice.

From the Naturist Action Committee:
"On October 9, 2001, the Supreme Court let it be known, without further comment, that it was not interested in hearing the appeal of a 1995 rule at Hippie Hollow Park in Texas that suddenly prevented naturist parents from being accompanied by their own children at the popular clothing-optional public park.
The High Court's refusal to hear the case wrote the final verse to a cause that had been in the judicial system for more than six years."

What more could they have done?

The Oasis (http://www.oasis-austin.com/) is open. They began cleaning up & rebuilding right after the fire last June.

From their web site:
Dear OASIS Guests,

In the early morning hours of June 1, 2005, lightning struck The OASIS and the resulting fire devastated much of our facility.

While this tragedy severely crippled us, business as usual will continue in our Starlight Terrace area -- same great views, sunsets and margaritas, with a limited menu. Please bear with us and we will be back better than ever and IN FULL SWING in a few months.

HIPPIE HOLLOW UPDATE!!!

Lemme fill everybody in on my WONDERFUL day at Hippie Hollow. I'm in Austin over the Easter weekend on business. The weather was extremely welcoming, it got up to 98 today, so I thought I'd make the pilgrimage. The Hollow is very easy to find with plenty of signs and very accessible, MUCH easier than Black's Beach in San Dog though I'm always a sucker for the ocean. Anyway, I arrived at 1030 on Sunday. The admission was $10 per car for a day pass. Very reasonable I thought. As a first timer to the park the girl at the gates only warning was to make sure I waited till I was clear of the parking lot before undressing. No worries... Also no one under 18 is admitted. Parking was convenient and close. The parking lot branches off into several footpaths and the main one to the beach is clearly marked. There is even handicapped access on a new wider trail that runs the length of the park. That main walking path is about 10 feet wide, freshly asphalted and very user friendly. Along the main path, about a mile long, there are several accesses to the rocky lakeside. If you choose, you can walk along the "beach" on a foot trail carved into the limestone. It's rockier and narrower yet still very easy to get along on in flip-flops.
The beach varies in width and is entirely limestone. There are many flat spots, nooks and crannies to get comfortable. I noticed a lot of the locals brought floats to use on the beach which would have been a huge advantage. However, I did just fine with my beach towel spread out on a flat rock next to the water.
I unclothed as soon as I hit the beach then went walking along the footpath to scout out the area. At 1030 there were only a handful of people scattered around, yet as the day went on the beach filled up quickly. Boaters from the lake anchored next to the beach and would raft-up just a couple of yards offshore. No bathing suits out there either. Nudity is wonderfully tolerated in the area. I found my spot, settled in, oiled up ("spray on" Banana Boat SPF 30, what a marvelous advanced age we live in...) and gave myself to the sun god.
I never felt self-conscious all day. Everybody there seemed to be enjoying the day and each other. There are several signs posted around with payphones with the lewd behavior hot-line clearly posted and throughout the day I saw several park rangers on the main trail. There seemed to be a huge amount of respect and total body acceptance and again never once did I feel self-conscious or that I had to "Check my 6". So I settled in on my rock and enjoyed the day and started killing tan lines. I even jumped in for a cooling dip several times. The surface lake temperature is around the mid 70's. But it gets cold QUICK.
If I have to add something in the negative it would be that around noon groups of Hispanic boys started showing up fully clothed, speaking Spanish, looking and giggling as people would walk by and seemed to set-up at strategic spots for gawking. As the day went on and the beach got more crowded, there were several groups, even middle aged older Hispanic males, some even bringing coolers who were very obvious in there intention to "watch the scenery". Again, I never felt threatened and the locals seemed not to mind and went about enjoying the day but it was a ?distraction?. And I could see how it could be unnerving to some newer people trying to enjoy the clothes free lakeside lifestyle.
Overall it was a wonderful day at Hippie Hollow and I hope that before I have to go back home to San Diego next weekend I can make it out there again. The absolute worst part of the day was putting my shorts back on which immediately came right back off for the drive home.
And oh by the way, The Oasis is alive and well. I enjoyed dinner there on the outside patio overlooking the Hollow nursing a Captain and Coke and remembering the wonderful day I just had with absolutely nothing between me, the sun, the water and some great company.

What is it like during the week? I expect to have an opportunity this summer to give it a try. Thought a week day might be better.

Weekdays are obviously much quieter. Easier to find a secluded place but there are still sections where groups gather.

The weather is excellent right now, almost too hot for this time of year..95+...but great for getting naked. Bring lots of sunscreen and water.

Well, not surprisingly, there's a Wikipedia entry for Hippie Hollow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippie_Hollow_Park). It says, "Hippie Hollow got its name due to its traditional use as a nude swimming, or "skinny-dipping", spot beginning in the early 1960s."

My g/f and I went to HH 2 weeks ago when we were in the area and we had a great time. It was her first experience with clothing optional locations, but she felt very comfortable and had a great time. Now she's hooked and wanted to get a season pass so we can go all the time!

We went on a friday morning and the park was mainly empty. There were maybe 6 cars in the parking lot. There were plenty of places to relax in the sun and the water was great. When we left @ 1, there were maybe a dozen people around with a decent mix of males & females.

Unfortunately we had afternoon commitments, but we came back around 5 and there were more people there, but still plenty of room for you to find a place to relax. We enjoyed sitting near the water and watch a group of people drive golf balls off the rocks towards boats that troll the area trying to "sneak a peak".

Overall we found the place very enjoyable and safe. We did see 2 people who were no doubt gawking, but they just walked the length of the park then left. Its pretty easy to spot the guys who are wearing pressed jeans and shirts and cowboy boots while carrying binoculars. Luckily, they left.

Weekday mornings at HH are definitely less crowded than the weekends. I know because I chose a weekday morning for my "first time" nude experience.

As for the boats, they are indeed a nuisance. I've seen some come awfully close to encroaching the buoy markers, for either the purpose of gawking or harassing ("PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!!") the people on the beach.

And it's nice to know that some things never change...was the buffed guy who walks up and down the shore wearing only jeans there as well? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/tongue.gif http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/freak.gif

Glad you and your g/f enjoyed the experience. I'm sure we'll run into each other sometime this summer.

Peace Out

Hello "Colonudie",

I guess you'll have to change that to "Texasnudie" soon!

If you start visiting Hippie Hollow often, you'll find there's a group of regulars who hang out on the ledges by the little garden area near the restroom in the middle of the park. They help take care of that area of HH, and look out for each other.

When you get moved to Texas, you might check with the Hill Country Nudists (http://www.hillcountrynudists.com/) about their members who regularly visit HH. HCN also hosts yearly Boat Trips (on a large Party Barge) to Hippie Hollow in September. They're a lot of fun, with more than 100 nudists from all over Texas enjoying Lake Travis, and the great cookout on the Boat. The next BOat Trip is on Saturday, September 23, 2006.

D-TX-
I think the group you are describing is the group I saw driving golf balls. They seemed very friendly and as my gal gets more comfortable with the whole social nudity scene, I hope to meet some of them.
I've heard of the Hill country Nudists crowd, but for previously mentioned reasons, I have not contacted the group. Perhaps in time.

the guy walking the shore looked liked he had just come from cattleman's meeting. Talk about feeling out of place! If I was him, walking around with my clothes on amongst a bunch of naked people, I'd want to leave. (but since I'm me, I'd more likely strip down too)
We should be going to HH much more once we make the move down to ATX so we will keep in touch.

I see that Hippie Hollow is, indirectly, mentioned in the main headline on the front cover of the June 2006 Texas Monthly Magazine. Headline reads:

SAIL! FISH! KAYAK! GET NAKED!
20 Great Things to Do In, On, and Around Texas
Lakes

It's number 6 (page 115) in the article that starts on page 110. The image used is a 3-D computer generated one, with black censor boxes included. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif
