A friend and I took a 2 hour trip to Sandy Hook/Gunnison Beach this past weekend. It was loads of fun. I had never been before and since I am getting ready to move away from the area, I figured I should go.
First, Sandy Hook is HUGE. It was a workout to get to the beach part. The parking situation was cool then there was the 14,587 mile wooden walkway to the beginning of the beach and the 7,895 more miles to the water. :-) Once I saw the "You May See Nude Sunbathers" sign I knew I was in the right place. Well, the sign and the "rebels." That's what I call the folks who camp their spots just beyond the sign. I get a kick out of them.
We found out spot amongst the small crowd, put towels and stuff down, stripped off, and headed for the water. Yeah...I am from Virginia where the water in August is comfy. Ocean water in New Jersey is COOOOOOLD!!! No, really, it was cold. I refused to get in past my ankles for the longest time but eventually I just sucked it up and went all in. I hate to admit that once you get all the way in the water it's not that bad.
We made a couple of new friends in folks who just stopped and said hi. I think stayed too long because both our backs were sunburned even with sunscreen.
There was only one sour spot in the trip. Behind us was a group of 3 young women - maybe in their 20's - and a few guys of various ages. They were just talking and goin' on for a while and more people came and went from their encampment. Later in the day we were talking with someone else when he made a face towards the group. Seems the women were in suggestive poses and the men - two of them with less-than-flacid penises - were snapping pictures on the digital camera. I was just a little upset because the women were obviously posing in a way that was extremely suggestive to entice the guys and, yanno, in that environment it's just not necessary. There were families and kids nearby and just regular, everyday people who didn't want to check them out. I had heard one of the men say to a friend earlier that they didn't go any further down the beach because it was a "little crazy down there." I didn't know what he was talking about but when I looked down the beach I realized it was where most of the gay people were. I thought "What a bastard...he makes comments about the crazy gays and then turns the area into a soft-porn photo shoot."
They didn't ruin my trip and they CERTAINLY were the minority but I just thought it was uncalled for. As far as everything else, couldn't have been better.
