There is a sucker born every minute. Apple and AT$T are hoping to find 10 million suckers.

it's all geared toward the younger generation. the ones that must have the latest everything. i worked at a local electronics store for christmas and the biggest sale was the ipod and cellular phones.

I think it is great.
http://www.quernstone.com/images/iPhone.jpg It is the most elegant expression of the new convergence of portable electronic devices - combining music, personal widescreen video, digital camera, cellular phone, full internet connectivity, mobile mapping, and PDA. The interface is beautiful and brilliant.
It isn't the first with most of these convergence capabilities - the Palm Treo has been around for several years, but the iPhone takes it to a new level.
It is also overpriced - but much less so than one would expect for a first generation device of this kind.
It is also underfeatured in some puzzling ways.
<LI> it has only 4 or 8 GB of memory, when video iPods ship with 30 or 60 GB - and you'll want those extra GB for video.
<LI> Has a full featured web browser: Safari, but doesn't (yet) support Java or Flash - so no YouTube or Google videos.
<LI> It has a nice digital still camera, but not video camera capability? No Video Phone capability?
<LI> It has mobile mapping - including voice directions, but has no GPS capabilities - even though, as do all new cell phones, it DOES have GPS built in.
<LI> Cellular internet connection speeds suck. That is not Apple's fault - the US cellular system is inferior to all of the industrialized world and much of the third world, and even our wired high speed internet (http://www.speedmatters.org/) is a joke compared to much of the world. But the iPhone shines when you enter a WiFi hot spot.
<LI> It has an onscreen keyboard for text input, with a nifty predictive completion system. But why not handwriting recognition? - Apple invented it with the Newton, and it is quite good these days. Graffiti would not be expensive to license and Apple has a handwriting recognition system for OS X - which the operating system that the iPhone runs a version of - the trades note that Apple is aggressively hiring HR experts, so my guess is that generation 2 will come with an optional stylus and HR.
Expect to see all these feature gaps to be filled in generation 2, and to see the price plummet in generation 3.
This is what every cell phone will be in <STRIKE>ten</STRIKE> five years. And it will cost $40 a month, with the phone included.

I'll wait five years then. I'm not generally impressed with new technology until it matures. I'd just as soon not pay to be someone's beta tester.

I intend to wait even longer than that. I don't intend to line the pockets of the telephone company executives with my money.

It looks like Cingular (ATT) may actually be losing money on the iPhone. They kept their plans fairly low price - much less than other carrier + data service plans, AND they are paying Apple a portion back too. Word is that Verizon - which has a better network than ATT - turned down a deal with Apple because they would be losing too much money.

Well, I'm just short of 72. There are lots of "the latest of everything" that I don't have, and likely never will. I won't stand in long lines for an iPhone, but I'll have one soon.
What may be getting lost in some of this discussion is that different people have different needs. There are millions who don't need what the iPhone offers, but there are a few other millions for whom the price will be worthwhile.
I travel extensively for business, never leaving town without my cell phone, laptop, and Palm PDA. Once I have the iPhone all of those will stay home, and I'll walk out the door with just the phone in my pocket. I've never owned an iPod, but maybe it will be nice to listen to my own music on the plane.

The I Phone is great for those who think it is great and otherwise for others. Gimick or not, who cares?? If you don't have one and don't want one then ignore it.
For one I think it is a great gadget and a preview of communications to come in the future to everyone, just as the internet which all readers of this form use to read this has become a terriffic form of communication that was discouraged when it first began popularlarity.
The more technology that comes out, the cheaper the stuff becomes and it offers sooooo much!
With this I Phone members here can call each other, see pictures of each other and even movies of each other! And all almost instantly! 20 years ago just a picture would take weeks to send to one another, if you could find each other in the first place !

Think again. It still has cell phone capabilities, so on an airplane it will have to remain turned off and stored once the cabin door is closed.
If you want to listen to music on the plane, load it into your Palm and listen away.
I'm waiting for the Motorola Q to come down in price some more. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif
I got burned on an HP IPaq last year. The touch screen went out twice within 6 months. It's in a box somewhere now. I don't plan on buying anything touch screen for the next ten years or so until they make them more reliable. I suspect we'll soon be hearing about the touch screen on the IPhones going out, rendering all of its capabilities void.

Actually not. the iPhone has an airplane mode that shuts off the phone while still allowing other functions to do their thing.

It sounds like they can't activate the services on them as fast as they are selling them. I would be a bit disappointed if I had to wait to use it after paying so much for one.

Now tell me , Just how wide can a screen be on something that fits in your pocket.
I think the "sucker born every minute" should be updated a bit. With the increase in population I'd say there is one born every second nowdays.
As for the Media Hype,
Since Paris got out of jail there really isn't anything else to talk about.
My phone sits on the endtable in the living room. If I want music , I turn on a radio. If I want tv I turn that on. And my screen is big enough to actually see what's on there.
If it wasn't for the 10 pm news and weather report , and Jay Leno after that, I could probably live without tv untill football season.

Me too. ATT apparently couldn't keep up with the traffic. One report yesterday said that the problems were mainly with people who had some issue that had to be referred to a person, i.e., someone who tried to activate the phone on a business line; initially ATT isn't supporting the iPhone on business accounts.
This morning Bloomberg is reporting estimates that Apple sold 500,000 to 700,000 iPhones over the first weekend. That's a lot of business for both companies.

Another issue that was discovered is that the batteries are not the same as other cell-phones. Apparently, owners will have to send their phone to Apple as the batteries are soldered to the phone.
Batteries are $79 plus shipping and it takes about three days.
Will I get one? I loathe phones and have no plans in even owning a regular cell-phone. I talk on the phone maybe ten-twenty hours in a year. I just don't need one.

I spend enough time on the phone providing technical support to technicians so I really don't want to be tied to a cell phone. I don't own one and so far I haven't seen anything that would justify the expense.

By all means, avoid the long lines and just don't get one. I'd never encourage people to buy something they don't want and don't need. There are all sorts of things that I'll never own because I don't need them or want them.
However there will be plenty of people in the market who do have a use for the features that are in the iPhone. Mine hasn't come yet, but I had a chance to try one out last week. My wife doesn't want one and doesn't understand why I'm getting one; however I fully believe that once she has her hands on mine we'll end up getting a second one for her before long.
As far as batteries go, iPods also have to go back to the factory for replacements. That hasn't stopped people from buying zillions of them.
All products have trade-offs. The iPhone isn't just another cell phone. It's the first in an entirely new generation of electronic products that bring multiple functions together in one superbly easy to use unit. There's no point in expecting that everything will be done just the way it is in less advanced phones.
Writing this brought up a long-forgotten memory. Over 40 years ago I decided that it was time to upgrade my ancient portable typewriter, and I bought a modestly priced electric model. My first wife encouraged me to replace the portable, but couldn't understand why I needed an electric model. "Why would anybody want a typewriter with cord?" was her question. However, after she used it a while she had no interest in going back to a manual.

If you are handy you'll soon have the option to replace batteries, and other parts, even upgrade, for considerably less. Here's the place (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone) to watch.
