There is a new movie coming out that is called Eurotrip. You can see the trailer at apple.com. But anyway, there is a scene in the trailer that shows the three male main characters discovering a european nudist beach. They are excited about doing this new adventure, because in their minds, over the sand dune would be hundreds of naked ladies. Well, when they strip down and run over the dune, they find a hundred mostly white dudes also hoping to find some naked ladies. Of course this is suppose to be a funny point in the movie. And I have to admit I chuckled too.
But then I realized I chuckled because it could easily seem like the truth. From the outside point of view, that is exactly what it looks like. I know there are young people, women, and other skin tones that enjoy being naked with others. But being that it is mostly a bunch of white dudes that enjoy this "lifestyle"...you really must wonder if we are fooling ourselves into believing some shangri-la fantasy.
Comedy is good because it reveals things about people we don't always see or want to see. We could take this movie and be offended by it. Or we can try to understand why it is saying these things about "us" and try to fix the stereotype that is seen by "them".

We took the harbour cruise in Sydney. They went by a nude "beach" (actually rocks) area and pointed it out. All we could see were guys.

Luckily, when I went to the nude beach in Perth (think it's Swanbourne), there were maybe a 100 people there of about 50/50 sex ratio. About the same, too, one day on Fontane Bianche beach in Sicily.

We took the same cruise, but later in our time in Sydney we had a chance to go out to that particular beach. An acquaintance recommended it to us. I was out in the water when the cruise boat came by.

Yes, there were mostly men there. Perhaps one in 15 or 20 were women. We later learned that it is a favored hangout for gays.

However, it's a nice spot; there was no inappropriate behavior; everyone around us was pleasant and friendly; and we had a good time. However my wife did admit that it would have been more enjoyable with a more even ratio of male/females.
