There have been topics posted about how requiring people to be nude when flying would be good for security and requiring them to be nude when shopping would reduce shoplifting to zero. Obviously, these ideas would not be accepted by the public. But what would the public accept?
You may have read about a new and very effective full-body airport scanner that can see through clothes. It reveals all objects being carried and the outline of the person's body, kind of like Superman's X-ray vision.
In limited trials of the machine, it was clear that people were unwilling to accept the idea of a security person wiewing the outline of their naked body in real time.
So the designers modified the machine to delete the image of the person's body, substitute an image of a sexless mannequin, and superimpose on it the image of the objects that the person was carrying. Problem solved, I presume.

Have any details on that recent one, Gary? Sounds interesting.

I have a hard time trying to figure what the big to do is all about having a full body scan at the airports...the way I look at it is, those who have the most to hide are gonna be the ones who really shouldn't be carrying on the planes what they have intended to begin with...
So if it makes flying safer to have a full body scan...I am all for it /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Just think, had everyone had to go through these scans everytime a plan was hyjacked...how many more planes would still be up in the air flying or wherever, after all I have nothing to hide /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Why impose the mannequin image? If they need to work out exactly where items are relative to the person's frame, surely the skeleton can be seen, and the position determined from that?

Aussie: As I understand it, the X-ray scan outlines the "edges" of the body and not specifically the skeleton.

Do you mean you can't see the skeleton? Unless that's the case, I can't see why you'd need to superimpose a body image after removing the real one.

They can pick up plastics, money rolled up, drugs, even very small diamonds. High Speed film can be fogged or degraded. The resolution is such that operators can clearly see external and internal organs and body cavities for hidden contraband, and ferrous or non ferrous explosives or objects.
The exposure of the scan is less than than normal background radiation received in a 2-4 hour flight.
Just type in "Airport+full+body+scanners" in any search engine, and you will get 3-4 pages of equipment, questions, and actual body scan photos showing various hidden contraband, and what the operators look for.
I cannot believe any nudist would object to a scan, unless they had something to hide.

Why is it that the authorities locked me up for being nude on my second story balcony, but want to use machinery to see what I have under the clothes they make me wear?I could volunteer to strip off for them, but that would be indesent exposure. They want to use expensive equipment to get a peek instead. How silly does all this sound? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Well, haven't you noticed the hundreds of other ways that George Orwell was right?
W /infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif hat we need to do when we fly. Go nude through the scaner nude to help them out.

Going nude would be a terrific idea. There's only one place you can hide any contraband, but that would be a pain in the ____.

One area Europe has it all over the States is the quality and excellence of their trains. Even if somebody (or somebodies) were to hijack a train, where would they go with it?. As far as the full body scan is concerned, now I understand that now church groups are asking the security to pixel out genital areas. Of course Mr. Modesty Ashcroft just might go along with it.

How many iterations will this take before the person isn't nude any more?
