Can anyone offer an update on preferred locations for c/o swimming in either Kauai or the big Island? We will be visiting both this winter.
The last time we were at Secet Beach, Kauai, there was a goon patrolling the beach and heavy surf. Not an ideal setting for a skinny dip.

Does anyone here know the best way to get to Secret Beach in Kauai?
Is Secret Beach the only nude beach in Kauai?
Thanks!!

Actually, Secret beach isn't a secret anymore. There are way too many tourists to there and is not nudist friendly anymore. I was on Kauai in June and the only nudist friendly beach that I found was Larsen's Beach. Somewhere I found some really good directions to that beach and I'll try to find them again for you.
As for Larsen's, it was definitely nudist friendly. Most people who go to that beach know to expext nudity even if they don't participate. Most of the time that I went there was anywhere from 4-8 other people there particpating. The swimming isn't the greatest because of the close reef and the current, but it is still doable in the areas where you can see the sand through the water. I'm not sure what the conditions are in different times of the year though.
Hopefully it will be as excellent for you as it was for me.

Near Kona, I found that people (myself included) will go nude at Makalawena Beach, especially on Wednesdays when the easy access road, via Kona Coast State Park, is closed. You can get still get there on Wednesdays using the four wheel drive road on the North side or by parking near the highway at the park entrance and riding a mountain bike on the road into the park. From the park it is a short walk, about 20 minutes, across the lava to Makalawena. Even if you don't go nude, this is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and well worth the effort to get there.
One last place - if you walk about 3/4 mile south from the resort at Anaeho'omalu Beach you will come to an area just before an abandoned coconut farm where you will find people nude.
But in general, nudity is not encouraged except in remote locations. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Thanks - good stuff - going in February,so if you have anything else to add, would love to know.

I too have have been to Larsens Beach. Twice this year. Once in Febuary, when the water was too rough, and this early August. August was fantastic! Up to 20 nudists a day, good swimming in spots. The trail to the west end, was really overgrown, so much that if you did not know your way, you get it lost in the high grass! Really! (I thought about bringing a machete next time and acting a little like Indiana Jones and wacking my way through!) It was worth it.

A little clarification please - re. how to get to Makalewena on Wed. We won't have 4wd or a mountain bike. Can we do as you suggested without a 4wd? Or is the walking distance prohibitive? I also heard you can walk about 10-15 minutes from Mahai-ula Beach. True?
Thx.

Just one more thing - the pictures of Makalewena on that web site I posted are not at all indicative of the sandy beach.
Some better photos at:

Just got back from Maui and Kauai.. Donkey Beach, Larsens Beach, and Secret Beach were great for nude sunbathing and swimming. No problems, it was a TON of fun!
Larsens was by far my favorite. Everyone was nude on the left side of the beach. There were 2 clothed couples on the right side. Kauai is definitely the best island for nudity that's for sure!

That is correct. Mahai'ula Beach is in Kona Coast State Park. Looking towards the ocean at the first parking area you will see a large trail on the right that heads off through the lava. There is a chain to keep out vehicles that you step over. Follow that trail and it will take you eventually to the far edge of Mahai'ula Beach, about a 10 minute walk, where there are some old buildings. Beautiful little area there with a picnic table. From that last bit of beach, you will see a narrow path through more lava fields. That trail leads to Makalewena, 15 to 20 minutes away.
The reason Wednesday is more nude friendly is because the park road is closed, so it is harder to get to Makalewena. You must park way out at the highway and hike all the way in. If you have a bike, it is not too far. But the hike from the highway to Mahai'ula Beach and then further to Makalewena is a bit daunting. Not impossible, but you should drive it first one day then come back and see if you want to walk it.
I was there on a non-Wednesday and still managed to go nude with one or two others very late in the day. You just need to be prepared to stay clothed in case there are families or anyone else who will object. You also must be careful since you have to walk back to your car at the State Park and get out to the highway before they close the gate. Otherwise you are stuck. The hours are posted.
A great site describing Kona beaches is:

There are links to every beach with nice photos. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Thanks for a lot of info, BiCycleNude. Leaving next week for a week on Maui and one on Hawaii. Could you comment on the following:
1. I heard (and saw on Google Earth satellite view) that there is now a road and parking area near Beach 69. Does this mean beach 67 is no longer nude/topless/c.o.? (I'm still not sure I've got the right road there - hope I can find it).
2. Re. the cocnut farm near A-beach - - - do you walk south along the beach or up into the area behind the beach?
3. Any comments on Poholu (or Polulu).
Thanks for any current info on clothes free areas. You've been a saint !!
