When I go its usually by myself (wife sometimes) and I am pretty much a minimalist myself - big towel, shades, suncream, water, book or paper - that's it! Not even a windbreak if I'm alone - can't be botered. All easy to carry and fast to pack up.

We tend to spend the entire day so we take a bit more.
Backpack chairs, towels, umbrella, small cooler with food and drink, blanket, book/magazine, sunglasses, sunscreen, cell phone, camera, pen/paper.
All this stuff fits in the storage pouch of the chair with the exception of the umbrella and cooler, so it does look like much and is easy to carry.

The thought of any warm sunny beach sounds great right now as I'm watching snow melt here in Nebraska.
How much I take to a beach depends on how far I'm gonna have to walk to get there. Usually it's at least a nice big towel, sunscreen, a book and something to drink. Last summer for the first time I got to enjoy a couple days nude at Mazo Beach in Wisconsin. Great beach, but a long long walk from the parking lot--so I didn't take nearly as much stuff along the second day.

My list includes the following: something to drink - usually water, good book or two, umbrella, old sheet - lighter and takes up less room, not to mention easier to get the sand off when I am ready to packup at the end of my stay, tent pegs to hold it down, something to munch on when the need arises, spray bottle of water when I want to cool down, cell phone for times it is needed, small pack of tissues for times when they are needed, walet, car keys, paper and pen for the times I want to write something important down, small bottle of hand lotion, small bottle of contact solution, beach chair for times I don't want to just sit on the sheet, umbrella, and my backpack to put the small stuff in.
Now for the stuff I don't take with me: "Radio/Boom-box and pets", both of which IMHO, should stay home so as to not annoy the crap out of others.
I also am one who firmly believes the main reason why I do go out to the beach is for R&R, and not the stress other folks pets have a way of bringing onto others especially when it comes to their more often than not unwanted surpises they leave behind. As for as the radios/Boom boxes, IMHO, nothing beats the destressing sounds of the beautiful music Mother Nature has for all to enjoy... http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
The final thing I dislike intensly, is/are the attitudes others bring to the beach when it comes to annoying the crap out of those who just want some quiet time without intuptions from those wanting more http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/annoyed.gif

I typically just bring a towel, water and my laptop when I go by myself. When the family comes we load the van with food toys, chairs, umbrelas, etc, etc. I will occassionally bring the dog because clothing optional beaches are typically secluded and a place where she can run in the surf.

I will bring the essentials to the beach. I always carry a large towel, sunscreen, shades, hat, water, and a book. I will bring my dog along if allowed at the beach. He is quite mellow, lays in the sun beside my towel, and does not roam unless I am up and walking. He loves to fetch in the surf, so will find a piece of driftwood to throw for him. As to the surprises, I might be the exception, but I always clean up any mess he "might" leave behind, but have only had one instance in many years of taking him along where I needed to do that.

Hat, sunscreen, chair, towel, cooler, reading material, umbrella, and windscreen. Windscreen is very useful in cooler weather when the sea breeze comes up.

Having spent the last two days at the beach http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/stickdance.gif http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/eusa_dance.gif http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/stickdance.gif I can tell you exactly what we took.
A cooler with the liquids of choice, a sun tent for a little shade at times, the days newspaper for a quick read and to do the Sudoku and crossword with my partner, a couple of towels of course and not a lot else (if you consider sunglasses and sunscreen a given).

I usually take to the mountains. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/cool4.gif
My car dosen't seem to know where a beach is and my memory of its location is a bit fuzzy in its own right. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
But, I usually take a towel, a hat, some water and some sturdy hiking boots ... oh yea, my walking stick and a knife (to be used to gather food along the way). http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

I take a large towel, water, book, sunscreen, and binoculars. Usually a cannister of pepper spray for unfreindly dogs (never have used it). The binocs come in handy for observing sea and wild life in our state. If my wife goes, we usually stay for several days and take the house dogs and food for all of us and stay for several days.

If it's a Wreck Beach day, we take a cold bag for lunch and drinks, "Eric the half-tent" *, towels, swim fins,a newspaper or magazine, a beach chair, an inflatable float toy, a bucket & spade, and extra water.
It's a long slog down trail 6 to Wreck Beach , so we spend most of the day there.
* "Eric the half-tent" is a three sided beach tent we bought in Swanage, UK for our holiday at Studland beach. Most people in North America use umbrellas, but we much prefer the half-tent. (We named it after Eric the half-bee in a Monty Python skit.)

Just don’t forget to take some sunscreen!

I take towels/sheets, lotion, water, sunglasses, binoculars for observing nature, camera, small amount of food, more water, sandals, lip gloss, a small suit to get out of as soon as possible http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/beam.gif, some form of id, and sometimes a hat.
Then just lay back and rotate to catch all the rays and listen to the peace of Mother Nature and enjoy meeting new friends or reconneccting with old friends.

I'm surprised by those who say they take a camera. I've wanted to but have not yet. Last time out at my local beach, I saw a couple of guys scolded for having a camera - although they were both clothed. I guess it might be different if they weren't. I would also expect the possability of a negative response to binoculars.

I take a camera with me routinely but I'm always very respectful of others. Any pictures I take are only ever of me or beach shots with nobody in the frame.

Pictures of your own family and friends is quite alright with me. If people in the background are so far away that they are unrecognizable, that's alright too.
It probably is best to be nude on a nude beach if you are taking photographs. Some people would react with hostility before you had a chance to explain your good intentions.

minimum: sandwiches, mineral water, bicycle (we have prohibition to use a cars there about 5 km afar) and that what is on me - shorts, sandals, t-shirt. Okay, flat keys, mobile.

I agree. I have found that both cameras and binoculars tend to get very negative responses from nude sunbathers. This is especially true if, like you said, if they are clothed. The masses will assume they are there for obvious reasons, which is an invasion of people's privacy. This is all the bit more self-evident if you dealing with whole families which may include children or minors. After all, they don't know what they are going to do with those photos! But me, I tend to bring a towel, bottled water, walkig sandals, and a small transistor radio with earphones if I have one. I'll naturally have my clothes that I wore in the event I have to traverse through a textile beach before reaching the nude or clothing-optional beach area.

Last time I went; chair, sandals, a couple of towells, sunblock, ipod, books to read, food, bottled water, volleyball/football, and always some type of water toy. I'm thinking about getting a squirt-gun like a super soaker. I don't mind laying down catching some rays but I prefer to be active at a beach. Talking about this makes me want to go now. =D

I'm with you Jesse. I like to relax when I go to the beach, but I also look forward to some activity too. On some beaches it is hard to even get people to play catch with a football or frisbee, much less volleyball. I have found that the best way to get others involved in playing frisbee is just to pick someone out and start tossing it to them, then add other people as they walk by. Some will just toss it back and keep walking, but others will stop long enough to play for a while!
